China hit back at Washington on Monday after the U.S. State Department removed from its website a line about American opposition to independence for Taiwan. Successive U.S. administrations have adopted a policy of 'strategic ambiguity' towards the self-governing island, leaving unsaid whether or not it would come to its defense in the event of a Chinese invasion. And the State Department's fact sheet on relations with Taiwan specifically said: 'We do not support Taiwan independence.
