Ben Johnson calls out Bears' offense after team's lackluster performance in Week 18: 'I was not pleased'

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson engineered quite the turnaround in his first season on the job. After finishing in last place in the NFC North last season, the Bears clinched the division crown in 2025. Quarterback Caleb Williams showed tremendous growth after a rocky rookie season and the team finished in the top 10 in points per game.

But Johnson isn't satisfied with simply winning division titles. He wants more. So, when the Bears' offense came out flat early in Week 18 — not scoring for three straight quarters against the Detroit Lions — Johnson took notice.

After the game,a 19-16 loss, Johnson called out the offense's execution, saying he was "not pleased" with the way it operated, per ESPN.

"I was not pleased with the offense today," Johnson said.

He added: "We can't dig ourselves in a hole like that. I was disappointed with the offense as a whole. I let those guys know that. And we'll be better for it."

[Get more Bears news: Chicago team feed]

Johnson later added that the team's game plan was fairly simple, and that he would have to look into why the Bears weren't able to execute it.

Williams, similarly, agreed with the head coach's assessment, admitting the offense came out "flat" in Week 18.

"We came out a little flat, and I think we've got to work on having urgency from the jump and get that going," Williams said.

Williams added that the Bears need to be better on "both sides of the ball." After giving up 42 points to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17, the Bears' defense did bounce back slightly against the Lions. The team utilized its usual bend-but-don't-break defense, limiting the Lions mostly to field goals once the team got into the red zone.

But with the offense failing to gain traction early, that wasn't good enough to pick up a win.

In the end, the loss didn't hurt Chicago too much. The team still earned the No. 2 seed in the NFC after the Philadelphia Eagles lost their Week 18 game to the Washington Commanders.

That gives the Bears until Saturday to get things turned around. The team will need to figure that out quickly, as the rival Green Bay Packers come to town, marking the third time the teams will play each other this season.

The Bears should be plenty fired up for that matchup. But they'll need to execute in all phases — something the team couldn't do in Week 18 — if they hope to win.

🏈 Bring on the NFL postseason

(Jonathan Castro/Yahoo Sports)

The NFL regular season came to an epic conclusion on Sunday night in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers secured the final playoff spot over the rival Ravens thanks to a missed field goal as time expired. ICYMI:Truly an incredible last 10 minutes.

More from Week 18:The Panthers lost to the Bucs but still won the NFC South, the Broncos and Seahawks won to secure their conference's top seeds, and the Raiders locked up the No. 1 pick despite beating the Chiefs on a 60-yard field goal.

  2. Bears (11-6)

  3. Eagles* (11-6)

  4. Panthers* (8-9)

  5. Rams (12-5)

  6. 49ers (12-5)

  7. Packers (9-7-1)

*Elite company: Seattle's Sam Darnold is one of just two QBs in NFL history to win 14 games in back-to-back seasons. The only other QB to do that? Tom Brady.

*Controversial decision: The Eaglesrested their startersin Sunday's loss to the Commanders. Had they won, they would have leapfrogged the Bears for the No. 2 seed.

*They did it again: The Panthers are the first franchise in NFL history to make the playoffs twice with a losing record. The 2014 team also made the field with a 7-8-1 record.

AFC playoff field

  1. Broncos* (14-3)

🏈23 sacks

Browns edge rusher Myles Garrettset the NFL sack recordon Sunday with his 23rd of the season, breaking the mark of 22.5 sacks previously held by Michael Strahan (2001) and T.J. Watt (2021).

Finishing strong:Garrett set the record with a faster get-off speed (0.23 seconds) than any player on any sack this season. "Probably the best get-off I ever had," he said after the game.

📺 96 of 100

Sports represented96 of the top 100 most-watched telecasts in 2025, tying an all-time record, per Sports Business Journal. Of those 96 broadcasts, 92 were football games (84 NFL, eight college), two were World Series games, one was the men's college basketball title game and one was the Kentucky Derby.

As for the non-sports broadcasts? The only four to make the top 100 were President Trump's inauguration, his address to a joint session of Congress in March, the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Oscars.

🏈 0 INTs

The Jets made the wrong kind of history (how unlike them!), becoming the first NFL team since 1933 to go an entire seasonwithout recording an interception.

For reference:In 1933, the NFL passing leader (Harry Newman of the Giants) had 973 yards and interceptions weren't even an official statistic. It's legitimately unbelievable that this happened in 2025, when the Jets defense allowed 3,674 passing yards and had infinitely more opportunities for a pick.

🏀 30-6

Following their historic 24-1 start, the Thunder are just 6-5 in their last 11 games. That includes three losses to the Spurs and one each to the Timberwolves and Suns, with the latter coming on Sunday courtesy of Devin Booker'slast-second 3-pointer.

Looking ahead:OKC (30-6) is still on pace for 68 wins, which would be tied for the fifth-most ever in a season. But the 73-win mark set by the 2015-16 Warriors appears much safer than it did a month ago.

🏈 College football's unlikely final four

(Taylor Wilhelm/Yahoo Sports)

We should all spend the next two weeks wrapping our minds around what's happened to college football this season. In Year 2 of the 12-team playoff, the sport has gone crazy in the best possible way.

From Yahoo Sports' Dan Wolken:

Take a look at that final four. That weird, disorienting, beautiful final four. One of Indiana, Oregon, Ole Miss or Miami is going to win the national title. Can we pause for moment and celebrate how impossible that would have seemed a mere three years ago and how cool it is now?

Here's Indiana, historically one of the worst programs in major college football, bullying everyone to a 14-0 record and the well-deserved status as national championship favorite thanks to a genius named Curt Cignetti who was hiding in plain sight until he was 60 years old.

Here's Oregon, the poster child for new money that hung around the elite for so long it became the establishment, hoping to deliver the national championship 87-year-old Nike founder and mega-booster Phil Knight yearns to experience.

Here's Ole Miss, the school that never lost a tailgate party but also never won a modern-era SEC championship, trying to save its conference from a playoff humiliation while the coach who built the program watches from Baton Rouge because he deemed it easier to win a title there.

And here's Miami, a team that wasn't projected to make the CFP until the selection committee pulled a switcheroo at the last second and vaulted the Hurricanes over Notre Dame for the final spot in the field.

Meanwhile? Goodbye Georgia. See ya, Ohio State. Best of luck in your future endeavors, Alabama.

All we ever wanted was a postseason where the teams deemed to be elite by poll voters or committee members had to prove it on the field in a playoff format that looked like every other level of football. Now we have it, and it's proven one thing definitively: When you put teams into a tournament bracket, unexpected stuff happens. Even in college football.

Bottom line:For far too many years, the paradigm of college football was based mostly on what we thought we knew about teams. It used to be a beauty pageant. Now, it's a month-long exam. Finally, the results are in. They may not be what we expected, but at least we know we're getting the truth.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris was fired after a Week 18 win against the New Orleans Saints on January 4. - Dale Zanine/Imagn/Reuters

As theNFL's Super Bowl hopefuls begin mapping their path to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, those teams that missed out on the playoffs begin rebuilding for next year.

For some teams, that involves a shake-up in the coaching staff and front office. The tradition is so established that it even has an informal nickname: "Black Monday."

TheAtlanta Falconsgot a headstart on the rest of the league Sunday night, announcing the firing of head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot.

The move came despite the Falcons finishing the season on a four-game winning streak to end the campaign at 8-9 in a three-way tie atop the NFC South, though the Carolina Panthers won the division through a series of tiebreakers.

A five-game losing skid in the middle of the season doomed Atlanta's playoff hopes and likely sealed Morris' and Fontenot's fates.

Morris served as Falcons head coach for two seasons, finishing with an identical 8-9 record in both campaigns. Fontenot accumulated a 37-48 record in five seasons as the team's GM.

"I have great personal affinity for both Raheem and Terry and appreciate their hard work and dedication to the Falcons, but I believe we need new leadership in these roles moving forward," said Falcons owner Arthur Blank in ateam statement.

"The decision to move away from people who represent the organization so well and have a shared commitment to the values that are important to the organization is not an easy one, but the results on the field have not met our expectations or those of our fans and leadership."

The team says it will immediately begin concurrent searches to fill both positions.

Ravens vs. Steelers: Pittsburgh rallies past Baltimore to seize AFC North title on dramatic last-second missed kick

From the beginning of the Baltimore Ravens' season, when they had an epic collapse and lost to the Buffalo Bills, right to the end when their season ended with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, nothing was good enough. Not even when they had a field-goal attempt to win the division.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson hit two huge touchdowns to Zay Flowers in the fourth quarter, each giving Baltimore a late lead, and in previous seasons the Ravens' defense probably would have finished it out and won the AFC North. Not this season. The defense couldn't stop Aaron Rodgers, who had at least one game-winning drive left in his historic career.

Rodgers hit Calvin Austin III for a 26-yard touchdown with 55 seconds left to give the Steelers the lead. Rodgers might have been less than a minute from the end of his historic career when he hit Austin for a touchdown that decided the division title. Jackson drove the team downfield, hitting a massive fourth down pass to put the Ravens into field-goal range. But rookie Tyler Loop missed a 44-yard attempt wide right.

— NFL (@NFL)January 5, 2026

The Steelers are the AFC North champions after a dramatic 26-24 win over the Ravens in the final game of the NFL regular season. Rodgers' historic career will last at least one more playoff game.

"We did all that to come up short, you know?"Jackson said postgame. "Devastating. Furious."

On the official clinching scenarios, the stakes for Sunday night's regular-season finale were clear: The winner would be the AFC North champion and get the No. 4 seed, playing the Houston Texans on wild-card weekend, and the loser would enter the offseason. The result had the potential to have a wide-ranging impact beyond which team made the playoffs. Either team would have had questions about their future after a disappointing season, including the future of their long-tenured head coach.

It's the Ravens who will be searching for answers after a season that went horribly wrong. There will be immediate questions about John Harbaugh's future as the team's coach. The Ravens wouldn't have been in a must-win scenario had they gotten more out of their superstar quarterback throughout the season. Everything that cost the Ravens a playoff spot will be examined, and the solutions might not be easy to find.

Ravens come up with timely stuff of Steelers in first half

The Steelers finished the first half with a call that was instantly questioned.

Pittsburgh trailed 10-3 in the final seconds of the first half when Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton was called for pass interference in the end zone. That put the ball at the 1-yard line with two seconds left and the Steelers, who had no timeouts, had a decision to make. They passed on the field goal to go for it, which wasn't that controversial. The play call was.

The Steelers motioned to the right and that left two Ravens defenders on the edge with only one blocker for them. Rodgers didn't change the play, flipped to Gainwell to the left and he was immediately hit by Ravens safety Alohi Gilman for a loss of a yard. Time ran out and the Ravens took a 10-3 lead into halftime.

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens)January 5, 2026

The Steelers' offense was a problem in the first half, and not just on the final play. Their lack of firepower at receiver without DK Metcalf, who was serving the second and final game of a suspension, was glaring. They got very little going downfield and had just a field goal at the half. It was just like the previous week, when Pittsburgh didn't score a touchdown in a loss to the Browns.

The Ravens weren't much better on offense, but a fourth-down touchdown pass for 38 yards from Jackson to Devontez Walker against the Steelers' blitz was the difference in the game. Derrick Henry had 112 rushing yards in the first half, which helped Baltimore keep control of the game.

Despite the Steelers' miscue at the end of the first half, the Ravens couldn't fully take advantage.

Fourth quarter turns into a classic shootout

The Ravens' offense started with a touchdown and then went cold. The Steelers scored a TD to start the second half, then Jackson's pass was tipped at the line and somehow T.J. Watt reacted quickly enough to pick it off. That set up a field goal to give the Steelers the 13-10 lead.

The Ravens have a two-time MVP quarterback in Jackson but he didn't look like himself for nearly the entire regular season. Hamstring and back injuries caused him to miss time, and it seemed to affect his explosiveness. When the Ravens needed him to have a big game to win the division Sunday night, he was ineffective deep into the second half. Through three quarters, he had 67 yards passing, and 38 of that came on one play. Henry was churning out some yards but the Ravens needed some passing game component and Jackson wasn't providing it.

But Jackson had a vintage quarter when Baltimore needed it. Jackson had a play that reminded everyone why he is one of the NFL's special players. He moved up in the pocket on a third down, splitting two defenders. He escaped and rolled to his right, then threw deep to Flowers for a 50-yard score.

The Ravens couldn't get a stop right after that. Rodgers drove the Steelers downfield, and despite helmet communication issues that caused the Steelers to use their final two timeouts, Kenneth Gainwell's 2-yard touchdown run with 3:49 left gave Pittsburgh a 20-17 lead.

Jackson answered. Somehow, nobody covered Flowers crossing the field deep, and Jackson found him for a 64-yard score. The Ravens led 24-20 with 2:20 left.

Rodgers found Austin down the left sideline after Chidobe Awuzie fell down. Austin scored a 26-yard touchdown with 55 seconds left but Chris Boswell missed the extra point, and the Steelers had just a 26-24 lead. After a long kickoff return, the Ravens needed about 20 yards to get a field-goal attempt. They had a fourth down, but Jackson lofted a pass that Isaiah Likely came down with inside of field-goal range. But Loop missed wide right.

"I felt like we had it," Jackson said of the Ravens' chances on their final drive.

Rodgers' career looked like it might end on a missed extra point by his kicker. But the Ravens' kicker made sure that Rodgers had at least one game left.

SNF: Ravens at Steelers for AFC North title

  • Steelers to the Playoffs

Thanks to the missed field goal, the Steelers are headed to the playoffs. They'll host the Houston Texans next Monday night to wrap up wild-card weekend.

  • Final: Steelers 26, Ravens 24

Somehow, the Steelers have held on to beat the Ravens and secured the division title. Tyler Loop had a chance to win it, but his field goal was just off the mark. What a finish in Pittsburgh.

  • Tyler Loop misses!

The Steelers hold on! Tyler Loop sent a game-winning 44-yard field goal wide right, and the Steelers have now won the AFC North. Wow.

  • Likely saves the drive!

Isaiah Likely saves the Ravens drive! Lamar Jackson just found him on fourth down, and he made an incredible grab through a pair of defenders. The Ravens are now in field goal range with 12 seconds left.

  • That's a 42 yard return for the Ravens, and they're already in a great position.

  • Steelers miss the extra point!

Chris Boswell just missed his first extra point all year, at the worst possible time. His last missed extra point was back in 2023.

So now, a field goal for the Ravens would win the game, and the division. They'll have 55 seconds, and all three timeouts, to pull that off.

  • Calvin Austin with the TD!

The Steelers aren't done just yet. Aaron Rogers got them down the field quickly, and then found Calvin Austin all alone on the left side. That 26-yard touchdown has the Steelers up in front again.

  • Zay Flowers again!

Lamar Jackson just found Zay Flowers completely wide open again for another deep touchdown! This time it was from 64 yards out! There was nobody around him at all.

The Ravens are up 24-20 now with 2:20 left. The Steelers are out of timeouts, too.

  • Touchdown, Steelers!

Kenneth Gainwell just punched in a 2-yard touchdown after the Freiermuth catch, and the Steelers are back in front. They lead 20-17 now with 3:49 left.

  • Aaron Rodgers found Pat Freiermuth for a massive 31-yard gain up the middle, and the Steelers are suddenly in scoring position.

  • Lamar escapes the sack, then throws a TD!

My god, Lamar Jackson. He just somehow escaped a pair of Steelers defenders to avoid the sack, and then stepped up and found a sprinting Zay Flowers for the touchdown! Jackson even pointed to Flowers to direct him where to go.

What a ridiculous play to get the Ravens back on top.

  • Aaron Rodgers was just swallowed up there on third down for a huge sack, and the Ravens have forced a punt. We'll see what Lamar Jackson and the Ravens can put together now.

  • End of 3: Steelers 13, Ravens 10

The Steelers have been in full control of this one in the second half, and will have a first down deep in their own territory after the break. The Ravens will need a quick stop, and then have to find a way to get their offense going after it's completely stalled out, in order to get back in this thing.

  • The Steelers defense is showing out right now. They just forced yet another punt, and have now held the Ravens to just eight offensive plays this quarter.

The Steelers will take over at their own 11 with 1:04 left in the third.

  • Steelers settle for a FG

That's a win for the Ravens defense there. Aaron Rodgers couldn't connect with Pat Freiermuth there in the end zone on third down, so Boswell instead hit a 25-yarder. The Steelers are now in the lead for the first time tonight.

  • TJ Watt with the deflected INT!

Now that's how you make a return to the field. T.J. Watt, in his first game back from his lung injury, just completed a deflection interception to set the Steelers up in an incredible position to score here.

What a turn of events for the Steelers here in the third quarter.

  • Steelers with back-to-back shoves for the TD!

The Steelers got the first down that time with the tush push, and then they opted to run it back for the touchdown. Just like that, we're all tied up.

  • Kyle Hamilton is down on the field now after an accidental helmet-to-helmet hit with Alohi Gilman there. Gilman ended up walking off, but Hamilton remained down for quite some time.

He eventually walked off on his own.

  • AFC North winner gets MNF

The NFL just released the schedule for the wild-card round, and the winner of this game will get to host the Houston Texans on "Monday Night Football" next weekend.

  • Halftime: Ravens 10, Steelers 3

That huge stop right before the break sent the Ravens into halftime with a seven-point lead. The Steelers will get the ball out of the break.
