Five reasons for MLB's agonizingly slow winter: When will free agents sign?

Groundhog Day may still be a month away, but in baseball free agency, groundhog day has been going on for the past 64 days.

Virtually every day is the same.

Rumors are floated. Teams check in. Teams check out.

And most of the top free agents still remain unsigned.

Spring training starts in less than seven weeks, and the likes of Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman and Framber Valdez still remain unemployed.

It's a market that gobbled up all of the top relievers in a hurry, with every available free agent closer, fromEdwin Diaz(Los Angeles Dodgers) toDevin Williams(New York Mets) toRobert Suarez(Atlanta), signing in the first five weeks. The biggest sluggers signed and got their big paydays withPete Alonsogetting $155 million from theBaltimore OriolesandKyle Schwarberreturning to thePhiladelphia Philliesfor $150 million.

Alex Bregman is a free agent again after spending 2025 with the Boston Red Sox.

But top free-agent starters outsideDylan Cease($210 million) haven't signed yet and there's countless others looking for jobs, or at least contract offers to their satisfaction.

So, what in the world is taking so long in this slow-drip of a free agency?

No one is blaming the upcoming labor negotiations with a potential lockout in December, and no one hints at collusion.

So what is it?

"The key word is methodical," one agent said. "I just don't see any urgency."

USA TODAY Sports canvased a handful of executives and agents who came up with the top five reasons for the slow free-agent pace:

1.Big-market teams – besides Blue Jays – yet to swim deep in free agency

The Blue Jays have spent $337 million this winter in free agency, signing four of the 15 free agents who have received contract of at least $30 million. Even after signing infielderKazuma Okamototo a four-year, $60 million contract, with a formal press conference scheduled Tuesday, they still want to add another power hitter. Their preference is to make Okamoto a super utility player.

The Blue Jays remain fully engaged in talks with infielders Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, with outfielder Kyle Tucker also remaining a possibility.

While the Blue Jays are trying to be the Dodgers of the North, their competitors in the AL East – except the Orioles – are standing back in awe.

The New York Yankees have spent $29 million. TheBoston Red Sox, who remain the favorite for Bregman, have been active on the trade market, but haven't spent a penny in free agency.

There are 21 teams who still have spent less than $60 million this winter, including big-market teams like theChicago Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees,San Francisco Giants,Texas Rangersand Los Angeles Angels.

"Major markets are waiting for another market in the same market," another agent said. "When you do that, you lose."

Since 2000, future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols' 101.3 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) leads all players, with Alex Rodriguez tied for second ways back at 89.7 WAR. See the rest of the top 25. 2. Alex Rodriguez - 89.7 3. Adrian Beltre - 89.7 4. Mike Trout - 87.5 5. Justin Verlander - 82.2 6. Clayton Kershaw - 78.1 7. Mookie Betts - 75.2 8. Max Scherzer - 74.7 9. Zack Greinke - 72.4 10. Robinson Cano - 68.7 11. Miguel Cabrera - 67.2 12. Carlos Beltran - 65.1 13. Chase Utley - 64.6 14. Freddie Freeman - 64.2 15. Paul Goldschmidt - 63.8 16. Joey Votto - 63.6 17. Roy Halladay - 62.4 18. Aaron Judge - 62.3 19. CC Sabathia - 61.8 20. Manny Machado - 61.7 21. Ichiro Suzuki - 60 22. Mark Buehrle - 60 23. Barry Bonds - 59.1 24. Evan Longoria - 58.9 25. Chipper Jones - 58.3

2. Teams exploring trades beforespending big on free agents

TheMiami Marlinsare listening to trade offers for starter Edward Cabrera, with the Yankees, Mets, Cubs and Orioles all still showing interest.

The Milwaukee Brewers still are listening on offers for ace Freddy Peralta.

TheArizona Diamondbackshave been aggressively shopping but now are pessimistic about trading All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. No one has come close to meeting their price.

And if Marte is still aboard, Bregman is definitely out of the D-backs' plans.

The St. Louis Cardinals are aggressively shopping infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan and third baseman Nolan Arenado. And the Washington Nationals have been shopping starter MacKenzie Gore and shortstop CJ Abrams.

Teams like the Red Sox have chosen to hit the trade market instead of pushing all of their chips into free agency, landing starters Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, as well as Willson Contreras.

As long as there's trade inventory, it slows down the free-agent market.

3.Bullpens took priority

"I've never seen anything like it,'' one veteran GM said. "Relief pitching was everyone's first priority, it seems like. The rest of the market came to a standstill.''

You name it, the top relievers all went, and got paid well.

The top nine relievers all were signed before the holidays, earning a combined $292 million:

  • Diaz: $69 million, three years, Dodgers

  • Williams: $51 million, three years, Mets

  • Suarez: $45 million, three years, Atlanta

  • Tyler Rogers: $37 million, three years, Blue Jays

  • Ryan Helsley, $28 million, 2 years, Orioles

  • Emilio Pagan, $20 million, 2 years, Reds

  • Kyle Finnegan, $19 million, 2 years, Tigers

  • Pete Fairbanks, $13 million, 1 year, Marlins

  • Kenley Jansen, $10 million, 1 year, Tigers

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (27) prays before Game 7. Shohei Ohtani (17) warms up before Game 7. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer (31) warms up before Game 7.

4.Five-tool guys are way away from a deal

Schwarber received a five-year, $150 million from Phillies, but he was in such demand, that even the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds were in serious pursuit, with the Reds even willing to offer more until Schwarber told them it wasn't necessary.

Meanwhile, Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Bregman and Bichette all remain unsigned, with no indication that any of them are close to a deal.

"It's been such an abnormality than years' past," one executive said.

While the Red Sox are the favorites to bring back Bregman, and the Yankees' No. 1 priority is the return of Bellinger, the Mets are still looming in the Bellinger derby while the Cubs remain in pursuit of Bregman for the second consecutive winter.

The Tucker market is the biggest mystery. He was projected to earn a contract in the $400 million neighborhood but could have to instead take a higher AAV on a short-term contract and hit the market again after two consecutive injury-plagued second halves.

"The major markets," one agent said, "are still power dry."

5. This may be the new normal

Really, the advent of free agency should be in January, and not in November for the stars of the game.

Everyone always waits for free agents' price tags to plummet, or at least for the years to drop, and nothing ever seems to get done until close to spring training training, or even in March.

Bryce Harper and Manny Machado were the two biggest stars in the winter of 2019, and had to wait until after spring training before they got the deals they desired, with Harper signing a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Phillies and Machado a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres.

Bregman didn't sign his three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox until spring training last year, in which he opted out, and now waits for a five- or six-year contract.

Players have learned to be patient, knowing at some point some team will blink.

"In my opinion, executives really struggle as far as decision-making now," one agent said. "They just collect so much more information, and then figure out how to utilize it."

So now that the holidays are over, and everyone is back to work, will the free-agent floodgates now open?

Not so fast.

This is salary arbitration week with teams and players exchanging salary arbitration numbers on Thursday, which will consume most of their time.

Maybe next week.

Aaron Rodgers proves to be game-changer Steelers needed him to be

So, this is why they broughtAaron Rodgersto Pittsburgh.

Prayers. Karma. Magic.

Rodgers did everything he could with his 42-year-old body and soul to lift the Steelers to victory in the winner-take-all showdown on Sunday night. He threw 47 passes for a season-high 294 yards. He went tit for tat against Lamar Jackson during a classic fourth quarter. On Pittsburgh's last two-minute drive, Rodgers was brilliant, capping it with a 26-yard touchdown strike to Calvin Austin III.

Then Rodgers could do nothing except watch.

The game was won – and lost – when Ravens rookieTyler Loop's 44-yard field goal try sailed wide rightat Acrisure Stadium as time expired.

Just like that, on the last play of the NFL's 18-week regular season, the would-be end of the season for Rodgers has morphed into his first trip to the NFL playoffs in four years.

Steelers 26, Ravens 24.

Hold off the questions of whether the living legend will retire or come back next year.

Yes, miracles happen.

"Chaos. Disbelief. Gratitude," Rodgers said during his postgame news conference when someone asked what he felt as Loop missed what was seemingly a made-to-order kick with the AFC North title at stake. "A lot of emotions."

<p style=Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) makes a catch for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field. The play was originally ruled an incomplete pass, but the call was overturned. Despite TeSlaa's effort, the Packers won the game 27-13.

The Raiders won the game, 20-13. Week 1: New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson (3) fumbles the ball on a tackle by Washington Commanders safety Will Harris (3) during the first quarter at Northwest Stadium. It was a rough Giants debut for Wilson (17 of 37 passing for 168 yards) as the Commanders won the game, 21-6. Week 1: Fireworks go off before the NFL Kickoff Game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles opened the season with a 24-20 victory over their longtime NFC East rivals.

It should be mentioned that Loop's kick came in the same end zone wherea Catholic priest sprinkled Holy Water on the turf before the game.

See, in a place where one of the franchise's most iconic moments is known as "The Immaculate Reception," Rodgers apparently got a lot of favor.

"I'm not going to ask any questions," said Cam Heyward, the veteran defensive tackle and Steelers elder statesman. "The good Lord made a good decision, tonight."

The Steelers, who were home underdogs on Sunday, may need some more divine intervention, if you will, inthe AFC playoffs. They'llopen at home in the wild-card roundnext Monday night againstthe Houston Texans, who just happen to have the NFL's longest winning streak, rolling with nine consecutive victories.

At least they'll have Rodgers, with a chance to write a storybook script with a franchise that, for all its glory and tradition, hasn't won a playoff game since 2016.

He mentioned, with a chuckle, that the Steelers would probably be considered a home underdog against the Texans. But it was no joke. Pittsburgh (10-7) barely got into the playoffs, having nearly blown what was once a seemingly insurmountable division lead a few weeks ago. And Sunday's showing, which included Jackson blistering the Steelers for two long touchdown passes to Zay Flowers in that furious fourth quarter, exemplified the hit-or-miss nature of this season.

Then again, it's a resilient bunch.

"We had to get off the mat today," Heyward said. "We shot ourselves in the foot a couple different times. We did not play a perfect game by any means, but in different moments, the offense, defense, special teams, stepped up."

Hearing Heyward assess the effort brings to mind a couple other times he addressed the state and mission of his team. In October, after a loss against the Green Bay Packers, hesounded an alarm about urgencyand maintained that his unit needed to do a better job of responding to adversity with quick adjustments – and fight – while in the midst of the game.

That happened on Sunday night.

During training camp, Heyward told me what needed to happen for the Steelers to avoid another late-season collapse. Remember, last season they were 10-3 before fading down the stretch and getting bounced from the playoffs by the Ravens. Besides health and freshness, he saw the ability to play complementary football as crucial. It didn't need to be a case of one particular unit carrying the team.

"So, you look for that balance," Heyward said in July.

That, too, happened at various points on Sunday night.

Still, the addition of Rodgers – lured with a lengthy courtship by coach Mike Tomlin during the spring – came with the idea that putting the four-time NFL MVP in the mix could be the game-changer that hasn't existed for the Steelers since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

No, as the final miss illustrated, it wasn't all on Rodgers. Yet when they needed his veteran poise, savvy and sharp-shooting throws in crunch time, school was out, so to speak. Pittsburgh started its final offensive drive with 2:20 on the clock.

"I've admired him from afar for a long time," Tomlin said. "It's good to do it with him.

"This was the vision in the spring when we pursued him. That's why you do business with a 41, 42-year-old guy. A been-there, done-that guy with a resume like his, he's not only capable, man. He thrives in it."

Rodgers would totally agree. He said that getting the ball with 2:20 left and needing a touchdown was exactly the scenario he wanted. He also thought part of his purpose on Sunday night was rather mystical, too, describing his desire to be a "magnetic force" to help his teammates stay confident and calm.

That mindset sure worked out when things got chaotic near the goal line as Rodgers stayed cool after he was unable to receive the radio communication from coordinator Arthur Smith in his helmet. Then, the radio in his replacement helmet didn't work, either.

"That's part of it, being the old guy, having a lot of gray in your beard," he said. "They expect things from you. It's nice to be able to deliver."

Sure enough, as Rodgers took over for his final drive, T.J. Watt stood on the sideline and expressed his confidence that they were in good hands. Watt called it "a weird, no-panic feeling."

He added: "You see the ball in the hands of (No.) 8 there and it's like, 'He's here for a reason. And this is why he's here. This is the best dude in the NFL for this moment.' To be able to see him deliver on a big stage like that was incredible to see."

It's striking that neither Rodgers nor Tomlin has made it back to a Super Bowl in 15 years, since the quarterback led Green Bay to a triumph against Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 45. Now they are joined at the hip in chasing such a possibility again – with the help of a zany ending.

"It just takes a little belief at this point in the season," Rodgers said.

He knows. If a team gets hot at the right time, it could lead to a special ending. First, it's a matter of just getting into the playoffs. On several occasions since he arrived in Pittsburgh, Rodgers has talked about wanting the Steelers to position themselves among the typical handful of teams that will have a legitimate shot to win a championship.

Now they're one of the 14 teams in the dance.

It was fitting that Rodgers wistfully reflected on squeaking out a 10-3 win against the Bears in the 2010 regular-season finale that allowed the Packers to make the playoffs as a sixth seed. It set up a remarkable playoff run as Green Bay became just the second sixth seed to win a Super Bowl.

"It gave us a little belief," Rodgers recalled of that win against the Bears.

Then he used the word again in considering the latest triumph.

"I think it's going to give us some belief," he said.

Belief. Faith. Intervention. Just pass the Holy Water.

Cadillac hires Zhou Guanyu as reserve driver for its debut F1 season

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — NewFormula 1team Cadillac made another experienced hire Monday with the choice of former Sauber driver Zhou Guanyu as its reserve.

The only driver from China in F1 history, Shanghai-born Zhou hasn't raced since 2024 but spent last season asreservewith Ferrari, which is supplying engines and gearboxes for Cadillac's debut season. That means he brings "relevant and recent experience" to Cadillac, the team said.

Zhou will be the backup to Cadillac's even moreexperienced pairingof Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez, who have a combined 16 wins and 527 starts between them.

"We wanted a candidate who had recent F1 driving experience, is prepared to work hard as part of a team and understands the challenges of developing a car throughout the season," team principal Graeme Lowdon said in a statement.

"Zhou fits the bill perfectly. He will be a great asset to us as we go racing in 2026 and we look forward to him being an integral part of our team."

Zhou's arrival also gives the Cadillac brand visibility in China, where he is acelebritywith a major commercial profile.

Zhou was Bottas' teammate over three seasons with Sauber, including under the Alfa Romeo name, from 2022 through 2024 and had a best race finish of eighth. His Ferrari duties last year included atest of 2026-specification tiresin September when Lewis Hamilton was absent for personal reasons.

Cadillac is alsobacking U.S. driver Colton Herta, formerly of IndyCar, through a season in Formula 2 in 2026 alongside test driver duties for the F1 team. That will help Herta get the points he needs for an FIA super license to make him eligible to drive in F1 in the future.
