As Olympics loom, Summer Britcher wins another World Cup gold for USA Luge

USA Luge's Summer Britcher is flying into the Olympics.

Britcher got her second women's singles luge win of the season on Sunday, moving her atop the World Cup standings and further cementing her status as a medal contender for theMilan Cortina Olympicsnext month.

She prevailed in Sigulda, Latvia, rallying in the second heat to top Lisa Schulte of Austria and Julia Taubitz of Germany. Britcher's two-run time was 1 minute, 23.840 seconds, while Schulte finished in 1:23.877 and Taubitz in 1:23.931.

It was Britcher's seventh career singles win, extending her all-time record for USA Luge sliders.

"Very, very happy," Britcher said after her third medal — two golds and a bronze — in three singles races this season. "I've had a lot of ups and downs here in Sigulda, but a long time ago it was like my favorite track and I really loved it. ... It was a lot of fun to feel that joy again on the track here."

Britcher has a chance to become the first American to win a World Cup overall singles crown. USA Luge has had four World Cup season-long champions — all in men's doubles. Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer were the first and then Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin did it three times, the last of those coming in 2002-03.

And — somewhat remarkably — Britcher leads the points standings despite missing a race. USA Luge skipped the season-opening World Cup competition in Winterberg, Germany, because it wasn't factoring into the Olympic qualifying formula.

Britcher was third going into Sunday's second heat; the singles races at Sigulda this weekend used the two-runs-over-two-days format, a bit of preparation for the two-day, four-run event at the Olympics.

Schulte and Taubitz were the only sliders who had a chance to catch Britcher at the end. They came up short, which evidently caught Britcher by a bit of surprise.

"I really did not think it was going to happen," Britcher said. "I tried really hard to not think about the results. With the one run each day, you have so much time to think about possibilities, so I really was just thinking about, 'OK, what do I need to do on the track?' So, I think maybe I had a little anticlimactic smile at the end. I was so shocked."

Ashley Farquharson was fifth for the U.S. in the women's singles race. Emily Fischnaller, who was fourth entering the second heat, lost control toward the bottom of the track and came off her sled. She did not finish — but walked off appearing to have avoided injury.

The women's singles win was one of two medals on the day for Britcher, who also helped USA Luge capture the bronze in the team relay.

Schulte and Austria won the team relay, with host Latvia second and the American team of Britcher, Jonny Gustafson in men's singles, Zach DiGregorio and Sean Hollander on the men's doubles sled and Chevonne Forgan and Sophia Kirkby on the women's doubles sled finishing third.

In the men's singles race, two-time Olympic singles champion Felix Loch of Germany got his 55th career win — two away from the all-time record of 57 held by retired Italian great Armin Zöggeler. Jonas Müller of Austria was second and Max Langenhan of Germany was third.

USA Luge plans to announce its Olympic team around Jan. 12, and the U.S. bobsled and skeleton teams for the Milan Cortina Games are expected to be unveiled on Jan. 19.

At Winterberg, Germany, the host Germans swept a women's bobsled race Sunday while Kaillie Humphries Armbruster of the U.S. narrowly missed a medal spot.

Laura Nolte drove to the win for Germany, holding off teammates Lisa Buckwitz and Kim Kalicki. Nolte's two-run time was 1:53.63, which was 0.16 seconds better than Buckwitz and 0.66 seconds ahead of Kalicki.

Humphries Armbruster teamed with Sylvia Hoffman to finish fourth, 0.95 seconds back of Nolte. Elana Meyers Taylor drove to eighth place for the U.S., and Kaysha Love crossed the line 10th.

There was a four-man race later Sunday.

Bobsled: Women's monobob, two-man World Cup races Saturday at St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Skeleton: Men's World Cup race on Wednesday at St. Moritz.

Luge: Men's singles, women's singles World Cup races on Saturday at Winterberg.

Mikaela Shiffrin's slalom win streak is over after second-place finish

Mikaela Shiffrin's winning streak is over.

Shiffrin finished second in the slalom on Sunday, Jan. 4, at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, the first time she's been beaten in her signature discipline this World Cup season. Shiffrin had won the first five slalom races this season, and six including the World Cup finals last season.

"I don't believe it's possible to win every race in the season with the competition level. Actually, I hope it wouldn't be possible," said Shiffrin, whose six wins in a row were one shy of her career-best streak. "Still, I wanted to give it my best shot.

"But I think this was a really, really amazing show," Shiffrin added. "I was grateful to be part of it and I'm motivated to push harder to find more speed for the next race."

<p style=1. A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson had one of the best seasons in WNBA history and earned the top spot on our list. Wilson led the Aces to their third title in four years after sweeping nearly every major award in the calendar year. She earned her second WNBA scoring title, third Defensive Player of the Year award, an unprecedented fourth MVP and her second Finals MVP, becoming the first player in WNBA or NBA history to accomplish it all in a single season. Becky Hammon said it best: Wilson is "Everest. There is no one else around." Wilson isn't ready to be in the GOAT conversation just yet. "I still got a little bit more winning to do before you put me in that conversation. When you're compared to greats, when you're compared to legends, that means you're doing something right and I'm so grateful," she said after sweeping the Phoenix Mercury in the 2025 WNBA Finals.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist owns the most World Cup wins of any alpine skier and is the only skier, male or female, to surpass the 100-victory milestone after reaching triple-digit World Cup victories in February. She's been on a tear ever since. Shiffrin has won five consecutive slalom races, including her win at the World Cup finals in Sun Valley, Idaho, in March and four wins to start the 2025-26 season. She's up to 105 World Cup wins, extending her own record, and is in great form ahead of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where she's a heavy favorite to medal.

Paige Bueckers, Dallas Wings Bueckers' prolific resume at UConn included everything but a national championship. That changed in April, when Bueckers led the Huskies to the program's 12th title. The win kicked off a whirlwind year for Bueckers. She was drafted No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings and was a bright spot in the franchise's otherwise dismal 10-34 season. She was named the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year and earned an All-WNBA second-team nod, the only rookie selected to an All-WNBA Team. Bueckers told USA TODAY Sports she recently had the opportunity to catch her breath and process her achievements and what's ahead: "On my birthday (on Oc. 20), I reflected on the year 23 itself and how much of a journey it was. I stayed the most present and it ended up being one of the most fun, joyful, just peaceful years of my life. Just embracing everything that kind of came my way."

Although the year got off to a rough start with back-to-back losses to Madison Keys and Coco Gauff in the Australian Open final and French Open final, respectively, Sabalenka rebounded to win the U.S. Open and clinch the fourth major title of her career. She finished the year with the most finals appearances (nine), most titles (four), most match wins (63) and set a single-season prize money record by taking home $15,008,519. She was named the WTA Player of the Year for the second consecutive year, the seventh player in WTA history to repeat and third in the past 25 years.

She led the Minnesota Lynx to the league-best 34-10 record, but Collier's accolades stretched far beyond the court. She's a vocal leader in the players' push for higher compensation in ongoing CBA negotiations with the WNBA and used her exit interview to publicly criticize league commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Collier also co-founded Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 basketball league that's drawn praise for prioritizing player amenities and paying competitive salaries. Unrivaled has provided an alternate avenue to earn money outside of the WNBA, which will be paramount as players are prepared to strike if CBA negotiations with the league remain at a standstill.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist won two gold medals at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September. McLaughlin-Levrone won gold in the 400m flat with a time of 47.78 seconds, which broke the 42-year-old North American record with the second-fastest time by a woman in the distance. With the win, McLaughlin-Levrone became the first athlete to win world titles in both the 400m flat and 400m hurdles, an event for which she owns the world record (50.37 seconds). The 26-year-old has been so dominant she hasn't lost in a 400m or 400m hurdles race in two years. "I knew there were a lot of people doubting me with making the switch from 400m hurdles to the flat 400m, but ultimately, I had faith in my training," McLaughlin-Levrone said after winning World Athletics WomenÕs World Athlete of the Year. "For me, 2025 was a year of stepping outside of the comfort zone and pushing the bounds of what was mentally and physically possible. I want to continue pushing boundaries in 2026."

Macario now has 16 total goals and five assists in 29 national team appearances. Macario's brilliance extended past the USWNT. The Chelsea FC midfielder is up to two assists in nine league matches so far and scored two goals in Chelsea's 6-0 UEFA WomenÕs Champions League win over St. Polten last month.

Knight led Team USA to the first sweep of Canada in the 2025 Rivalry Series with five goals and two assists across four games. Knight also had a PWHL-leading 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists) in 30 games for the Boston Fleet. She's set to appear in her fifth Olympics next year, which will mark the most for a U.S. hockey player, male or female.

The reigning national player of the year transferred from Stanford to Texas Tech and earned a seven-figure payday from the school's collective, marking the largest NIL deal for a college softball player. It was well deserved. Canady finished the season with a 1.11 ERA (second-best in the nation) and a team-high 11 home runs. She led Texas Tech to a school-record 54 wins, a Big 12 regular-season and tournament title and the program's first WCWS appearances. Even Texas Tech alum Patrick Mahomes came to see what all the hype was about and attended Game 2 of the WCWs.

She didn't know if she would ever play volleyball again. By December 2025, Stowers was named the most outstanding player in the 2025 NCAA women's volleyball tournament after leading Texas A&M to their first national championship in program history with a sweep of SEC rival Kentucky. Stowers finished with 10 kills on .304 hitting, plus six digs, two service aces and one block. The Aggies shocked the world by defeating No. 1 overall seed Nebraska in five-sets, before sweeping No. 1 Pitt and No. 1 Kentucky in the Final Four.

Shiffrin's time of 1:40.34 was 0.14 seconds behind Camille Rast of Switzerland. When Rast crossed the finish line Sunday, Shiffrin gave a big smile and then greeted Rast with a hug. It was Rast's second win in as many days following her victory in the giant slalom on Saturday, Jan. 3, and caps an emotional weekend for the Swiss skier.

Rast grew up near the resort in Crans-Montana where at least 40 people were killed when a fire broke out during New Year's Eve celebrations.

"I cannot explain how hard it is to have a race weekend (with) back-to-back victories in two different events. It's so exhausting," Shiffrin said of Rast. "She had a spectacular weekend. It's really motivating to see that. It's very inspiring.

"And I think for everybody watching, you have to just appreciate the talent and the work ethic and the ability that it takes for an athlete to do that. She showed up and she did it amazing."

It was a good day overall for the U.S. team, which had four skiers in the top 20. Paula Moltzan was fourth, A.J. Hurt was 13th and Nina O'Brien was 19th.

Rast's two victories this weekend brings her closer to Shiffrin in the overall standings. Shiffrin now has 823 points, 120 more than Rast.

"Everybody likes to win, right? But I think it's better to have these really challenging, testing moments and to rise to the challenge and to put out the best skiing possible, and then we get to have this showdown in the second run," Shiffrin said. "And I'm learning to love that."

Napoli triumphs over Lazio with 2-0 win, but match ends in chaos with three red cards

MILAN (AP) — Defending champion Napoli recorded a comfortable 2-0 win at Lazio to move second in Serie A on Sunday as it continued its good form from the end of 2025.

Leonardo Spinazzola and Amir Rrahmani scored in the first half of Napoli's first match of 2026.

There was a bad-tempered finish, with three red cards in the final 10 minutes.

Lazio defender Adam Marušić and Napoli counterpart Pasquale Mazzocchi were sent off after getting into a scuffle, that descended into a brawl with Napoli coach Antonio Conte trying to separate the two sides.

Lazio forward Tijjani Noslin had already been sent off in the 81st minute following a second yellow card.

Napoli moved a point below Serie A leader AC Milan and one above Inter Milan, which was playing against Bologna later.

Inter hosts Napoli next weekend.

Napoli had ended last year in fine form with a 2-0 victory over Cremonese, shortly afterwinning the Italian Super Cup.

The visitors took the lead in the 13th minute. Matteo Politano twisted and turned down the right flank before putting in a cross for Spinazzola to volley home.

Napoli doubled its advantage in the 33rd when Rrahmani headed a Politano free kick into the bottom right corner.

The only negative note for Napoli — apart from the red card — was the sight of David Neres having to be helped off in the 70th minute after the in-form winger went down with an apparent ankle problem, adding to the team's already lengthy injury list.

Tyson Fury says he is coming out of retirement in 2026

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Tyson Fury is returning to the ring after announcing on Sunday that he will step out of retirement.

The former heavyweight world champion confirmed his comeback in a post on social media, which sets up the prospect of a long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua.

"2026 is that year. Return of the mac," Fury posted on Instagram. "Been away for a while but I'm back now, 37 years old and still punching. Nothing better to do than punch men in the face and get paid for it."

Fury retired last year after losing for a second time to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024. Before his two bouts with Usyk he was unbeaten in 35 fights, winning 34 and drawing one.

Fury did not mention potential opponents, but his announcement comes after increased speculation about a clash with British rival Joshua in 2026. Joshua, who is also a former world champion, last month knocked out YouTube star Jake Paul. But he was injured in afatal car crashthat killed two of his friends in Nigeria this week, which has resulted in uncertainty over his immediate plans.

Fury is a two-time world champion. He ended the reign of Wladimir Klitschko with a points win in 2015 that saw him crowned Super WBA, IBF and WBO champion.

He didn't fight again until 2018 - but a thrilling trilogy with American Deontay Wilder resulted in a draw and two victories to claim the WBC title.

Fury previously said he was retiring after he beat Dillian Whyte in 2022, but was back in the ring the following year.

A fight with Joshua has long-been anticipated. There is also the potential of a trilogy-capping fight with Usyk or a clash with WBO champion Fabio Wardley.
