The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds couldn't even complete one lap Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway during the first Major League Baseball game played in Tennessee. After a lengthy pregame rain delay that put off the first pitch for 2 hours, 17 minutes, the Braves and Reds only registered four outs before another weather delay forced their game to be suspended until 1 p.m. ET on Sunday with the Reds holding a 1-0 lead. More than 85,000 tickets -- an MLB record -- were sold for the MLB Speedway Classic, but Mother Nature did not care about the night's historical significance. With puddles visible on the infield dirt, the Reds' Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz registered infield singles before Austin Hays poked an RBI single into left as McLain splashed home. The tarp returned to the field shortly thereafter. When the game resumes Sunday, Cincinnati will have runners on first and second with one out. Cincinnati rookie Chase Burns set down the Braves in order in the first, which included strikeouts of Jurickson Profar and Matt Olson. Atlanta sent reliever Austin Cox to the mound in the bottom of the first and he fanned TJ Friedl before allowing the three consecutive singles. --Field Level Media

White Sox INF Miguel Vargas sidelined by a left oblique strainNew Foto - White Sox INF Miguel Vargas sidelined by a left oblique strain

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas was scratched from Saturday night's game at the Los Angeles Angels because of a left oblique strain. Vargas was replaced at first base by Lenyn Sosa. The White Sox said Vargas is being further evaluated. Vargas, 25, was acquired from the Dodgers as part of a three-team trade in July 2024. He is batting .229 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 106 games. Prior to the matchup with the Angels, the White Sox placed right-hander Dan Altavilla on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain. Right-hander Owen White was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The team also announced that first baseman Ryan Noda was claimed off waivers by Baltimore. The 32-year-old Altavilla is 0-1 with a 2.36 ERA and two saves in 25 games with Chicago this year. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

West Indies hold their nerves to beat Pakistan in T20 thrillerNew Foto - West Indies hold their nerves to beat Pakistan in T20 thriller

LAUDERHILL, Fla. (AP) — Jason Holder took four wickets and then smashed a boundary off the final ball of the game to lift West Indies to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Pakistan on Saturday and level the three-match Twenty20 cricket international series. The veteran allrounder bowled an inspired spell to take 4-19 off four overs, as Pakistan struggled to 133 for nine after it won the toss and batted in Florida. The West Indies reply also stumbled as Pakistan's spinners kept scoring difficult but late cameos by Gudakesh Motie and Romario Shepherd kept West Indies just about in the contest before Holder's heroics off Pakistan talisman Shaheen Shah Afridi's final delivery clinched it. It is the first T20 victory for West Indies in seven matches, a span that includes a heavy5-0 series defeat to Australia, on top of a test series sweep last month. "Been a tough couple of weeks for us," captain Shai Hope said. "We always try to get better, the guys have put in a lot of hard work. "Hopefully today is the turnaround we are looking for." Earlier, Hasan Nawaz's 40 from 23 balls and captain Salman Agha's 38 from 33 deliveries led Pakistan from a precarious 53-4 in the 10th over, but 133 looked a vulnerable target at the innings break. Fresh from taking three wickets inPakistan's 14-run win in the opening gameat the same venue on Thursday, Mohammad Nawaz took another three Saturday, returning 3-14 from his four overs. Like Thursday's game, West Indies found scoring more than five-an-over difficult on the spin-friendly pitch and lost regular wickets. When Roston Chase was teased into a big shot by Saim Ayub (2-20), West Indies had sunk to 70-5 in the 14th over and looking at a steep mountain to climb. West Indies rally Motie got the innings moving with his quickfire 28 from 20 balls before Shepherd chipped in with 15 from 11 balls, including taking 10 runs off Hasan Ali in the second-to-last over to give West Indies a glimpse. Needing eight runs from the final over, Afridi (1-31) removed Shepherd off the second ball, with Holder and new batter Shamar Joseph only able to score singles off the next three balls. Afridi then bowled a wide to leave West Indies needing three runs from the final ball. Holder (16 from 10 balls) then found the gap at backward square to score the boundary they needed and end their six T20 match losing streak. "We've had a fair bit of criticism which is warranted," player-of-the-match Holder said. "We haven't done justice to our potential. "We can be a lot better, consistency has definitely plagued us." The third T20 will be held in Lauderhill on Sunday before an ODI series in the Caribbean. ___ AP cricket:https://apnews.com/hub/cricket

Iran's army chief says Israeli threats remain, state media sayNew Foto - Iran's army chief says Israeli threats remain, state media say

DUBAI (Reuters) -The commander-in-chief of Iran's military, Amir Hatami, said on Sunday that threats from Israel persist, according to state media. In June, Israel and the U.S. launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during the so-called 12-day war, in which Tehran retaliated against Israel with several barrages of missiles and drones. "A 1% threat must be perceived as a 100% threat. We should not underestimate the enemy and consider its threats as over," Hatami said, according to the official IRNA news agency, adding that the Islamic Republic's missile and drone power "remains standing and ready for operations". Last month, Israeli Minister of Defence Israel Katz warned that his country would strike Iran again if threatened. (Reporting by Dubai Newsroom; Editing by William Mallard)

Israel's Ben-Gvir says he prayed at Al Aqsa mosque compoundNew Foto - Israel's Ben-Gvir says he prayed at Al Aqsa mosque compound

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Sunday and said he prayed there, challenging rules covering one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East. Under a delicate decades-old "status quo" arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there. Videos released by a small Jewish organisation called the Temple Mount Administration showed Ben-Gvir leading a group walking in the compound. Other videos circulating online appeared to show Ben-Gvir praying. Reuters could not immediately verify the content of the other videos. The visit to the compound known to Jews as Temple Mount, took place on Tisha B'av, the fast day mourning the destruction of two ancient Jewish temples, which stood at the site centuries ago. The Waqf, the foundation that administers the complex, said Ben-Gvir was among another 1,250 who ascended the site and who it said prayed, shouted and danced. Israel's official position accepts the rules restricting non-Muslim prayer at the compound, Islam's third holiest site and the most sacred site in Judaism. Ben-Gvir has visited the site in the past calling for Jewish prayer to be allowed there and prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue statements saying that this was not the policy of Israel. Ben-Gvir said in a statement he prayed for Israel's victory over Palestinian militant group Hamas in the war in Gaza and for the return of Israeli hostages being held by militants there. He repeated his call for Israel to conquer the entire enclave. The hillside compound, in Jerusalem's Old City, is one of the most sensitive locations in the Middle East. Suggestions that Israel would alter rules at the compound have sparked outrage in the Muslim world and ignited violence in the past. There were no immediate reports of violence on Sunday. A spokesperson for Palestinians President Mahmoud Abbas condemned Ben-Gvir's visit, which he said "crossed all red lines." "The international community, specifically the U.S. administration, is required to intervene immediately to put an end to the crimes of the settlers and the provocations of the extreme right-wing government in Al Aqsa Mosque, stop the war on the Gaza Strip and bring in humanitarian aid," Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement.
