Did instructor miss JFK Jr.'s fatal flight? A 'Love Story' fact-check

Which parts of "Love Story" are fact and which parts are fairytale?

"Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" kicked off its nine-episode look at the romance between the son of the 35th U.S. president and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and his intriguing, breath-of-fresh-air bride on Feb. 12 (Thursdays, 9 ET/PT on FX and streaming on Hulu). The dashing JFK Jr. is played by model-turned actorPaul Anthony Kellyand TV actressSarah Pidgeonembodies Bessette, who greatly valued her privacy.

Though inspired byElizabeth Beller's "Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,"series writers took liberties when adapting the 2024 book for the small screen – which might leave you wondering what's true. Here, we've investigated the most notable moments from the premiere to save you the search:

Did John F. Kennedy Jr. date Madonna? His illustrious dating history

A friend of John's makes reference to a romance withMadonnain the "Love Story" premiere. And in actuality, pre-Bessette, Kennedy Jr. dated some very famous faces, including Madonna,Sarah Jessica Parker, andDaryl Hannah. His romance with Hannah plays out on "Love Story," with Dree Hemingway portraying the "Splash" star.

Robert Littell, who roomed with Kennedy Jr. at Brown University, said in"JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography"that Kennedy Jr.'s romance with the "Material Girl" was brief.People reportsit happened in the late '80s.

"Madonna was totally a fling," Littell said. "Nothing more. Barely a fling at that."

Parker told The New York Timesin 1992 that she and Kennedy Jr. crossed paths at a theater, and he asked her out. While she enjoyed her time with him in the early '90s, she didn't enjoy the attention.

"We would go places where there wasn't a soul around, and the next day I'd see pictures of us there in the tabloids," Parker said.

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah's relationship timeline

Hannah and Kennedy Jr. began seeing each other in the late '80s,according to reports.

Carole Radziwill, former "The Real Housewives of New York City" star, was famously married to Kennedy Jr.'s cousin Anthony Radziwill until his death from cancer in 1999, and remembers meeting Bessette in 1991 at a shared house in Southampton. "The following weekend, John came back to the beach house, this time with Daryl, who he had been off and on with for a couple of years," Radziwill said in the book "JFK Jr." "He said he needed to try one last time to see if their relationship could work."

"They stayed together for several more years and seemed happy," she added. "Although there were many times I saw John and he'd ask me about Carolyn because we stayed in touch a bit and I just knew he still had a longing for her."

How did John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette meet?

In "Love Story," John and Carolyn are introduced by Calvin Klein at a benefit for the rainforest in 1992. But the circumstances around their first meeting are a little cloudy. Friends and experts couldn't settle on a story in the 2019 documentary,"JFK Jr. and Carolyn's Wedding: The Lost Tapes."

Beller writes in "Once Upon a Time" that Kennedy Jr. and Bessette met in 1992 at a suit fitting at Calvin Klein, where she worked as a publicist. "Unsurprisingly, John came out of the meeting smitten," per Beller, "with a few men's suits and Carolyn's phone number. He called within days."

The "Love Story" Carolyn plays it much coyer. When John asks for her number at the fundraiser, she says, "I don't give my number out to strangers" and tells him, "You know where I work. Try reception." Then John surprises her by showing up at the Calvin Klein showroom for a new suit.

"Love Story" executive producer Brad Simpson acknowledges the "competing narratives" in an interview with USA TODAY. "But the most common narrative [of] how they met was at this fundraiser … so we decided that would be their first meeting." In "Love Story," Carolyn nearly leaves their first date because John is late, but the circumstances of the dinner could not be confirmed by USA TODAY.

Were John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette headed for divorce?

In the "Love Story" premiere, which opens on the day of their deaths, July 16, 1999, John shares that he's staying at a hotel and not the Tribeca loft he shared with Carolyn. "It's not like she's begging me to come home," he tells his sister-in-law Lauren (Sydney Lemmon). When Carolyn arrives at the airport, she and John begin bickering about her tardiness and his family. John apologizes, blaming his intensity on anxiety.

"I love you," he says. "I appreciate you being here." Carolyn pulls him in for a kiss. "I love you, too," she says.

In his final days, Kennedy Jr. was staying at The Stanhope Hotel, according to "Once Upon a Time." Supposedly, he and Bessette "had a heated fight" on Tuesday, July 13, 1999, about her joining Kennedy Jr. at Rory Kennedy's wedding, which they'd leave for on Friday, July 16.

"She needed a break; she felt she'd done her share of Kennedy events for the time being," Beller writes. "Carolyn and John's fight turned into an enormous blowup, with John losing ever more patience, and Carolyn feeling ever more like an afterthought."

Wednesday, Kennedy Jr., Bessette and her sister Lauren had lunch at the Stanhope, in which Bessette agreed to go to the wedding, according to the book. Their meeting "signified a truce of sorts," Beller writes.

"Love Story" creator Connor Hines tells USA TODAY that his research taught him "these were two people who were very much in love, but were plagued with just impossible obstacles that would nearly break anybody, but that in the end, they always would've chosen each other."

Christian Siriano invites New York Fashion Week guests into his surrealist dream

NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Siriano barely had 48 hours to design his finale gown for hisNew York Fashion Weekshow. The iridescent green liquid fabric Siriano had ordered from Italy was stuck in customs for weeks before it finally arrived shortly before Thursday's runway show.

APTOPIX NYFW - Christian Siriano F/W 2026

The designer of "Project Runway" fame may have been accustomed to executing his designs on a tight deadline but with months to design his other looks, he told The Associated Press, that the last-minute design brought a fresh wave of excitement ahead of his show.

"The best dresses come at the end because I'm really, really in it," he said.

Unlike his previous shows, whereSirianodecorated his venues in sync with this theme, this time around the designer pared down the atmospheric drama allowing his clothes to speak for themselves. For his latest collection, the designer experimented with texture and a variety of colors to create his surrealist dream.

"It was more of an idea of this fantasy dream, maybe like a Dali painting that can never be explained," he said. "It really is this dreamlike world that hopefully everybody feels really beautiful in."

Siriano's fashionable crew of celebrity friends and loyal customers sat front row, including actors Leslie Jones, Uzo Aduba, Julia Fox, Natasha Lyonne,Whoopi Goldbergand rock singer Taylor Momsen.

The show opened with black and white structured looks before models emerged dipped in a sea of colors. They stopped along the runway to pose with their hair transformed into a surrealist swoop style, crisscrossed around their necks.

Siriano's collection reimagined red carpet silhouettes including eye-catching gowns with dramatic asymmetric necklines and exaggerated tulle sleeves or peplums. Even his black and white designs, featured shimmering fringe, alluring cut outs, feathers or delicate beading.

Siriano's looks are not for the wallflower. The designer fashioned several revealing sheer looks.

In typical Siriano fashion, the runway was filled with models of all sizes and genders.

"We need to escape and be somewhere else … in a dream world," he said. This will be a celebration of like, beauty, bodies, age and cultures and we need that.

Siriano's standout looks of the night featured pops of color including a chartreuse lace cropped jacket and maxi skirt, and the bright green ombre bubble gown that arrived shortly before his show.

Siriano's supermodel muse Coco Rocha closed the show in the ombre bubble gown. As Rocha theatrically posed down the runway, she locked eyes with guests. Celebrity guest Jones cheered on the model, yelling "drama" as she passed by.

"He makes you feel secure in his clothes," Jones said of Siriano. "It doesn't matter what size you are; he's going to make you feel beautiful and that's the essence of Christian."

Backstreet Boys as Super Bowl 61 halftime act? 'Let's make it happen'

Super Bowl 60wrapped up just a few days ago, but the Backstreet Boys are already looking to get involved in Super Bowl 61.

During a performance by the group at the Las Vegas Sphere, AJ McLean floated the idea to the crowd on hand.

"What do you guys think? Backstreet Boys: 2027 Super Bowl halftime,"McLean said.

It wasn't entirely clear whether McLean was joking, but his suggestion was unsurprisingly met with a chorus of cheers from the crowd on hand. That prompted him to continue pitching the possibility.

"Let's make it happen then," McLean said. "I mean, you know, why not, right? Why not? It's in L.A. It's right down the street. Let's go."

The Backstreet Boys have performed at the Super Bowl before, but they have never headlined the halftime show. The quintet was offered an opportunity to do so at Super Bowl 35 between theBaltimore RavensandNew York Giantsin 2001, but they instead opted to sing the national anthem, asNick Carter told Entertainment Tonight in 2021.

NSYNC and Aerosmith instead combined to headline the halftime show that year, which also featured appearances by Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears and Nelly.

EXCLUSIVE:The Backstreet Boys in the studio for new Super Bowl ad

Any Backstreet Boys fans will have to wait a while to see if the NFL listens to the group's plea. The league typically doesn't announce its Super Bowl halftime entertainment until its regular season begins.

Last year, Bad Bunny was revealed to be the Super Bowl 60 halftime performer on Sept. 28, 2025.

Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler dealing with back inflammation, lat issue, will skip bullpens

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Young New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler is dealing with back inflammation and a lat issue, causing him to skip some bullpen sessions.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed the injury Thursday and made it seem minor, as did the right-hander, who turned 25 last week. Schlittler said his concern was "zero."

"I've been dealing with it for a little bit so I just want to make sure I'm on top of it and get ready for opening day," Schlittler said.

He made his major league debut on July 9 and went 4-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts. With a fastball that averaged 98 mph, Schlittler struck out 84 and walked 31 in 73 innings. He pitched eight shutout innings against Boston in the Wild Card Series, then allowed four runs — two earned — over 6 1/3 innings in the Division Series vs. Toronto.

"Obviously we're very excited about him and expect him to be a key part of our rotation and still expect," Boone said.

Schlittler underwent a test that Boone said "kind of came back good news."

"Probably keep him off the mound for the next few days at least," Boone said. "He's continuing with his throwing program."

New York already projects to start the season on March 25 without ace Gerrit Cole, who isrecovering from Tommy John surgery last March 11, and Carlos Rodón, regaining arm strength following an operation on Oct. 15 to remove loose bodies in his left elbow and shave a bone spur.

Rodón is not likely to return to the Yankees before May and Cole is expected back sometime during the first half of the season. In addition, Clarke Schmidt will miss much of the season followingUCL repair surgery on July 11.

Schlittler said he first felt the issue a few weeks ago and described it as minor inflammation and "maybe more lat, as well." He hopes to pitch off a mound next week.

Asked whether he had dealt with the issue in the past, Schlittler said "last year, some on-and-off stuff."

"For now, it's just good to take care of it and make sure it doesn't really turn into something that you start to worry about," he said.

New York's projected rotation for the season's start includes Max Fried, Schlittler, Luis Gil, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers. Gil, the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year, injured a lat during spring training last year and didn't make his season debut until Aug. 3.

Schlittler pitched 164 innings last year, including the postseason, well above his previous professional high of 120 2/3 in 2024. He took four weeks off after the playoffs, then started his offseason throwing program.

"There's no really off time," he said. "When it comes to baseball, you're always working on all that."

Schlittler attended big league spring training last year, started the season at Double-A Somerset, then was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 3. He was called up after just five starts with the RailRiders.

"I came in here last spring training kind of as a no one, a prospect, whatever it was, but I was really trying to learn things, coming here and get my work in. It was more an experience last year," he said. "I feel like being over here now it's like, 'Hey, I've earned that role. I'm going to go out there. I know exactly what I need to do.'"

Yankees announce Goldschmidt return

Paul Goldschmidt's $4 million, one-year contract was finalized.

He can earn $2 million in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $500,000 each for 400, 450, 500 and 550.

A seven-time All-Star and the 2022 NL MVP, the 38-year-old hit .274 with 10 homers, 45 RBIs and a .731 OPS with the Yankees last year after signing a$12.5 million, one-year contract as a free agent. He had 534 plate appearances but just 155 after the All-Star break as he slumped and lost playing time to Ben Rice.

With his return, the Yankees have brought back 24 of the 26 players on their Division Series roster last October. Only relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver departed.

Schmidt was placed on the 60-day injured list to open a roster spot.
