If it's December, it's time for the Hero World Challenge, the Tiger Woods-hosted 20-man tournament in the Bahamas that caps off the golf year. Woods' foundation is a beneficiary of the event, and Woods himself holds a press conference at the start of every tournament week.

Unfortunately for fans of Woods, those press conferences in recent years have tended to be ever-more-grim updates on Woods' ever-more-fragile health. Woods hasn't played on the PGA Tour since his appearance at the 2024 Open Championship. Earlier this fall, he underwent yet another back surgery that will keep him off the course for an indeterminate length of time.

"I need time to figure this out with my back and with my body," Woods said Tuesday morning. "As I start to get more explosive and start to rotate and see what I've got, then I can find out or assess what tournaments I could play in, how much I should play, where I would like to play."

In the past, Woods has indicated that he'll pare his schedule back to a few select events, including majors and significant tournaments on the PGA Tour. He's also played the PNC Challenge with son Charlie, and competed in the debut season of TGL, the indoor golf league, but indicated Tuesday that both of those are off the table for now.

"I just started to chip and putt, I just started to lift in the gym, I just started this process. A disc replacement takes time," he said. "It's not as long as a fusion, thank God, but it's going to take time."

Woods noted that he'd spent significant time watching the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage, including conversations with most of the U.S. team. But when asked if he'd be interested in the 2027 captaincy at Adare Manor, he said, "No one's asked me about it." Asked directly about the captaincy, he repeated his same line.

Over the course of several questions, Woods delved into the thorny matter of the PGA Tour's future — specifically, the idea of scarcity weighed against the need to sustain and increase revenue while satisfying sponsor and broadcast obligations.

"We're trying to give the fans the best product we possibly can, and if we're able to give the fans the best product we can, I think we can make the players who have equity in the Tour, we can give them more of that," he said. "So the financial windfall could be fantastic for everyone who's involved."

As a member of the Tour's Future Competition Committee, Woods has a significant role in shaping the future direction of the Tour, whatever direction that might be. "We're trying to figure out what is the best schedule possible so we can create the best fields and have the most viewership and also the most fan involvement," he said.

"I know I'm not really saying a whole lot, but I'm trying to say as much as I possibly can because there's so many moving parts to this and it changes all the time," he said. "It all starts with the best tour on the planet, which is ours."

Asked why he wanted to mount another comeback, Woods was more contemplative than his past conquer-everything self. "I'd like to come back to just playing golf again," he said. "I haven't played golf in a long time. It's been a tough year."

Trial date set for Cleveland Guardians teammates in sports betting scandal

Emmanuel Clase and his Cleveland Guardians teammate, Luis Ortiz, will stand trial May 4 on charges they allegedly rigged their pitches so sports bettors could profit.

Judge Kiyo Matsumoto scheduled the trial date on Tuesday during a brief status conference. The judge said the trial could last about two weeks.

At this point, federal prosecutors said they have not extended plea offers to the defendants, both of whom were present in Brooklyn federal court.

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase pleads not guilty in alleged MLB sports betting scheme

According to their indictments, the pitchers started conspiring with sports bettors in 2023 on specific pitches they would throw during MLB games. The bettors then used that information to place prop bets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, the indictment said.

The bettors wagered on the speed and type of Clase's pitches based on information they knew in advance by coordinating with Clase, sometimes even during MLB games, prosecutors said. Clase often threw these allegedly rigged pitches on the first pitch of an at-bat, investigators said. To ensure certain pitches were called as balls, Clase threw many of them in the dirt, well outside the strike zone, according to investigators.

In exchange, Clase received bribes and kickbacks, prosecutors said.

The indictment includes numerous examples of pitches Clase allegedly rigged. In total, by rigging pitches, Clase caused his co-conspirator bettors to win at least $400,000 in fraudulent wagers, according to investigators.

Ortiz allegedly joined the scheme this year, according to the indictment, and allegedly agreed in advance to throw balls instead of strikes on pitches in two games in exchange for bribes and kickbacks. Both Clase and Ortiz have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Lions reportedly lose cornerback Terrion Arnold for rest of 2025 NFL season due to shoulder surgery

At 7-5, the Detroit Lions are very much in the playoff picture in a surprisingly tough NFC. But as the regular season barrels toward its conclusion, the Lions' push for the postseason is getting more difficult.

That trend continued Tuesday, as second-year cornerback Terrion Arnold will reportedly miss the rest of the 2025 NFL season due to shoulder surgery, according to NFL Network.

After an uneven rookie season, which earned Arnold some down-ballot Rookie of the Year award votes, the 22-year-old corner has had trouble staying on the field in Year 2. Arnold originally sustained a shoulder injury in Week 5. At the time, Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed concern, saying Arnold could be "out a long time" due to the issue.

But the Lions got better news than expected after further evaluation. Arnold missed a few weeks before returning to action in Week 9. That return was short-lived, as Arnold sustain a concussion the following week, preventing him from playing in the Lions' next two contests.

He returned to face the division-rival Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving, but played just 18 snaps in the contest. Arnold recorded four tackles during the game.

On Monday, the team may have shed some light on Arnold's limited playing time in that contest, placing the second-year corner on Injured Reserve due to a shoulder injury. While that move left open the possibility Arnold could return if the team made a run in the postseason, Tuesday's report suggests that won't be the case. Arnold will reportedly miss the rest of the year due to season-ending surgery.

The Lions expected big things from Arnold when the team selected him with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He experienced an up and down rookie year, allowing a99.2 passer ratingon balls thrown his way as a rookie, per SI.com.

Arnold didn't do much to prove himself in Year 2, though injuries clearly played a role in his less than stellar metrics. PFF grades Arnold as the 91st best cornerback in the NFL this season.

Despite his on-field struggles, Arnold's injury comes at a tough time for the Lions. The team briefly thought it was going to get standout center Frank Ragnow to come out of retirement for the stretch run, but the veteranfailed his physicaldue to a hamstring injury and won't play in 2025. The team could also be without standout tight end Sam LaPorta, who underwent back surgery ahead of the team's Thanksgiving game against the Packers. Campbell said LaPorta would likely miss the rest of the season due to the issue.

Under Campbell's watch, the Lions have transformed from bottom feeder to one of the best teams in the NFL. Despite some lofty regular-season win totals, however, the Lions have yet to reach the Super Bowl under Campbell.

Even without some key players, the Lions are talented enough to rally down the stretch and emerge as a legitimate contender. But those injuries are going to make it an uphill battle for last year's No. 1 seed in the NFC.
