DETROIT (AP) — Cade Cunningham scored a career-high 46 points on a whopping 45 shots, Daniss Jenkins made the tying 3-pointer to force overtime and the Detroit Pistons rallied to beat the Washington Wizards 137-135 on Monday night.

Cunningham finished with 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and two blocked shots, becoming the first player to reach all those totals in a game since the NBA began tracking steals and blocks in 1973-74.

Barzal scores in overtime and Sorokin shines again as the Islanders beat the Devils 3-2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Mathew Barzal scored in overtime, Ilya Sorokin stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced and the New York Islanders bounced back from allowing the tying goal to Simon Nemec with 4.7 seconds left in regulation to beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Monday night.

Barzal scored 1:17 into 3-on-3 OT to get the win, not long after Nemec's shot at 6 on 5 with Jacob Markstrom pulled for an extra attacker beat Sorokin to extend the game. Nemec's goal was ruled good after officials spent a few minutes reviewing it.

Kyle Palmieri had put the Islanders ahead on the power play with just under three minutes left in the third period. Palmieri scored it off a rebound of a shot by No. 1 pick Matthew Schaefer who has become the favorite to win the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.

Palmieri also assisted on Bo Horvat's tying goal 6:55 into the second. The Devils had taken an early lead on Timo Meier's power-play goal 2:12 in, and the Islanders did not have their first shot on net until past the nine-minute mark.

Sorokin could not be blamed on Meier's goal after some tic-tac-toe passing, and he was screened on Nemec's first of the season. He continued his stretch of strong play since getting some practice tips recently from coach Patrick Roy, himself a Hall of Fame goaltender.

Markstrom made 22 saves for New Jersey.

Islanders: Visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday night to open a three-game Western Conference road trip.

Devils: Visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night to begin a stretch of five consecutive games away from home.

The NFL remains a hot ticket internationally as the league expands its global footprint

MADRID (AP) — The initial batch of tickets for the first regular-season NFL game in Madrid were gone in a matter of hours, with nearly 700,000 people trying to get a seat to watch the Miami Dolphins play the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Real Madrid's iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

For thefirst game in Irelandlast month, organizers said some 600,000 digital devices were logged on to try to buy tickets for the Pittsburgh Steelers' game against the Minnesota Vikings at Dublin's famed Croke Park.

The demand has been similarly high in other cities hosting games in recent years, and more countries have been reaching out to the NFL. An NFL official says "probably a day doesn't go by" without a city saying they are interested in potentially hosting a game.

The host cities themselves have treated the games as their Super Bowls, with a series of promotional events and fan activities planned in the weeks ahead and high-profile artists performing at halftime. They have generated massive fan interest locally and attracted fans from nearby European countries, allowing host cities to gain financially and in visibility.

Mini Super Bowls

Gerrit Meier, managing director and head of NFL International, said organizers went into the game in Dublin last month with "a real sense of a mini Super Bowl coming to town."

There were NFL experiences and shops brought to iconic venues, and murals and light projections were visible throughout the Irish city. Similar activities were being promoted for Spain's inaugural game in Madrid.

Puerto Rican superstarDaddy Yankeeand Argentine producer Bizarrap are set to perform at halftime in Madrid. British singer Myles Smith was the star at halftime in Dublin, while Grammy award-winning artistKarol Gperformed in Sao Paulo in September. Grammy-nominated Kid Laroi was the headliner for Berlin's first regular-season game last week, while the games in London included shows by British singerRayeand British rapper Giggs.

Most games abroad ever

Thethree games played in Londonthis season took the total there to 42 games since 2007, which is when the NFL officially kicked off its push to grow internationally with regular-season games abroad. The league has been aggressively expanding in recent years, and the seven games played internationally this season are the most ever for the NFL. Next year, it willgo to Australiaandadd a game in Riode Janeiro, Brazil.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reiterated that the league plans to increase the number of international games to a point where each team will get to play a game abroad every year. He said in September that theNFL also wants to play in Asia. The league may also look at possible locations for a game in Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia could possibly be in the mix as well.

"Probably a day doesn't go by where someone on our international team doesn't receive outreach from a city or an entity interested in working with the NFL and potentially hosting a game," said Peter O'Reilly, the NFL vice president in charge of international affairs. "There's very strong interest. I think cities have seen what it's like to host a game, and the visibility that it brings, as well as the magnet it is for people from that region, and more broadly, around the world to come in."

Economic impact

The estimated economic impact for London since the first game was played there in 2007 has reportedly reached $2.6 billion. The first time the NFL played in Germany in 2022, the economic impact was more than $80 million for the Munich area, and Spain expects similar numbers, according to some local estimates.

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez said it was "a great honor that a competition with the prestige of the NFL" chose Madrid as host.

"This is a matter of great pride for us, for Real Madrid fans, for Madrid citizens and for Spaniards," Pérez said when the game was announced. "We are convinced that the city and our stadium are ready to be part of one of the greatest spectacles in the world."

More than 60 regular-season games will have been played abroad through this season, with London, Munich, Frankfurt, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Madrid, Berlin, Dublin and Toronto hosting them.

"Our historic first game in Madrid is a very exciting next step in the league's history," the NFL country manager for Spain, Rafa de los Santos, told The Associated Press. "Beyond playing international games, and expanding our global footprint, we want to grow our presence in key markets around the world year-round, bringing more fans globally closer to our game, our clubs and our players."

Global momentum

O'Reilly said the league is excited about growing global momentum and the owners "continue to prioritize global growth" and work to establish a strategic foundation "across the league to become a true global sport property."

"We're now in a state where teams are very interested in raising their hand to play in certain markets, especially where they have global market rights, and we're hearing from more and more countries and cities who are interested in being part of these international games' road map," O'Reilly said.

The league recently expanded its Global Markets Program, which awards teams international marketing rights to build brand awareness and fandom beyond the United States. Now all 32 teams participate in the program across 21 international markets — up from 25 clubs across 19 markets in 2024.

Teams benefiting

The NFL teams have jumped on the opportunity to expand their brand internationally and have been riding the current wave of interest.

"When you play a game abroad, it's not just about the result on the field," said Dolphins vice president of international development Felipe Formiga, who leads the organization's brand development and growth strategy in international markets. The Dolphins will be playing their eighth regular-season game abroad, second only to the 14 played by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"For us, it's about celebrating American football internationally, about making history by playing in this first-ever game in Spain," he told the AP. "This movement by the NFL in recent years to motivate teams to expand internationally has presented us with great opportunities, and it has been a perfect match for the Dolphins, which already has in its DNA that aspect of being an international organization."

Not your average Joe. Root aiming to improve Ashes return for England in Australia

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Joe Root received a typicallytabloid receptionahead of the Ashes series opener in Perth, where the local newspaper described the star England batter as "Average Joe" due to one glaring ommision from his cricket CV.

Thesecond-highest scorer in test cricket historyhasn't scored a century in an Ashes test in Australia.

Indeed, as he embarks on his fourth Ashes tour Down Under, Root is aiming for his first win in a test match on Australian soil. His record to date stands at 12 losses and two draws.

Root posted three centuries and an unbeaten half century in the five-test home series against India in June and July.

He is No. 1 in the International Cricket Council's men's test batting rankings, and his ability to score runs in Australia could go a long way to determiningEngland'sfate in the 2025-26 series which kicks off Nov. 21 at Perth Stadium.

Marcus Trescothick, England's assistant coach, backed Root to keep adding to his 39 hundreds overall in test cricket, which is fourth highest overall behind Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ricky Ponting (41).

"The way he's gone in the last couple of years will probably explain that, you know, he'd be very comfortable with what he's trying to do at the moment and how he's playing his game," he said Tuesday. "We've seen Joe really grow massively in the last three seasons."

Trescothick said Root had flourished under the coaching of Brendon McCullum and thecaptaincy of Ben Stokes.

"His game has gone to the next level and hence the reason where he is on the rankings," Trescothick said. "You'd be very surprised if he doesn't carry on in that same sort of vein really with the style of player that he is and the quality performer he is."

Root's highest test score in Australia is 89, and his average is 35.68 in 14 tests Down Under, well below his career test average of 51.29 runs per innings.

The former test captain has scored four hundreds and averages 43.88 in Ashes series in England, where he has played 20 of his 34 tests against Australia.

There have been questions in the past over his ability to handle the extra pace and bounce of the pitches in Australia, something Trescothick is confident Root can turn around and score that "elusive 100."

"I'm fairly confident where he's at at the moment," Trescothick said, "and where he's going into the series."

Root will turn 35 next month, on the scheduled last day of the fourth test in Melbourne, and seemingly has plenty more time to amass test runs.

Tendulkar is the leading all-time scorer in test cricket with 15,921 runs — 2,378 more than Root.

McIlroy eyes end-of-season title and happy he's 'out of all the political stuff in golf'

The Masters to complete thecareer Grand Slam. A homeIrish Open. An awayRyder Cup.

It has been a year of unforgettable, career-defining wins for Rory McIlroy. There's a good chance it will get even better in Dubai this week in the Northern Irishman's final event of the 2025 season.

The No. 2-ranked McIlroy will look to be crowned Europe's No. 1 player for afourth straight yearwhen he competes in the European tour's season-ending World Tour Championship starting on Thursday.

If McIlroy holds offMarco Pengeand Tyrrell Hatton — the only players in range of overhauling him — he will win the Race to Dubai title for the seventh time in his career and move within one of Colin Montgomerie's record haul.

Montgomerie won his season-long points titles — when it was called the Order of Merit — each year from 1993-99 and again in 2005.

McIlroy is tied on six with the late Seve Ballesteros, and remains committed to tailoring his schedule so he can play as many events on the European tour as possible while also working the PGA Tour calendar.

"There's a wonderful heritage to this tour. I think with the fractured nature of the men's professional game at the minute, this tour needs all of its stars to step up and play in the big events," McIlroy said.

"I understand that I am one of those people and I want to do my utmost to help in whatever way that I can."

McIlroy said he was the happiest he has felt in a long time, on and off the golf course. He attributes some of that to stepping away from the wrangling at boardroom level brought about by the emergence of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf breakaway circuit.

From being the face of strident anti-LIV criticism, McIlroy is back to being just a golfer.

"I have a clear head and I'm out of all the political stuff in golf, basically, and I can just focus on playing and playing where I want to and making myself competitively happy by playing in the tournaments that I want to play," he said.

"And then having more time to make myself personally happy with doing the things I want to do away from golf. Travelling with my family and showing my daughter different parts of the world and doing things like that I think is a very nice place to be in life."

Stopping Rory

McIlroy leads the Race to Dubai standings. He is around 767 points ahead of second-placed Penge and around 1,720 points ahead of third-placed Hatton. There are 2,000 points on offer for the winner at the Earth Course.

A win obviously guarantees McIlroy the title, as would finishing second alone.

For Penge — a three-time winner on the tour this year — to overhaul McIlroy he either needs to win and hope McIlroy finishes worse than second alone, or finish in a tie for second and for McIlroy to be down the leaderboard.

Hatton needs to win to stand any chance of an unlikely title.

PGA Tour cards

Penge's breakthrough season has already seen him lock down one of the PGA Tour cards on offer for the top 10 players in the Race to Dubai standings who are not otherwise exempt.

The next nine players currently in position are Kristoffer Reitan, John Parry, Adrien Saddier, Alex Noren, Laurie Canter, Li Haotong, Daniel Brown, Keita Nakajima and Jordan Smith.

McIlroy award

The European tour announced on Tuesday a new trophy — the Rory McIlroy Award — which will be presented to the player who performs best across all four majors in a season.

The inaugural award will be handed out next season and is in honor of McIlroy being the first European to complete the career Grand Slam.

"To have something named after you, that will be presented to future generations of players, is a huge honor and it is very humbling," said McIlroy, who has made himself ineligible to win the award.

"I hope," he added, "my success can inspire other DP World Tour members to chase and achieve their own dreams for years to come."
