Brian Kelly files lawsuit against LSU, claiming school is trying to fire him 'for cause' to avoid $54 million buyout

LSU is apparently trying to get out of paying Brian Kelly his nearly $54 million buyout altogether.

The former Tigers football coach filed a lawsuit on Monday, alleging that the school has taken the position that it has not "formally terminated" him. The school reportedly informed Kelly's representatives of this position on Monday, according to ESPN's Dan Wetzel. They are now trying to fire him "for cause."

"LSU's representatives had a call with Coach Kelly's representatives, where LSU took the position that Coach Kelly had not been formally terminated and informed Coach Kelly's representatives, for the very first time, that LSU believed grounds for termination for cause existed," the lawsuit said.

Kelly is seeking "a declaratory judgment confirming that" LSU's move to fire him was without cause, and that he "is entitled to receive the full liquidated damages" listed in his contract. If he is fired "for cause," LSU wouldn't be obligated to pay him the full amount in his buyout.

TheTigers initially split with Kelly on Oct. 26after the team fell to Texas A&M 49-25 at home. That dropped the Tigers to 5-3 on the season. Frank Wilson has since taken over as the team's interim head coach. Kelly went 34-14 in his time at LSU. He landed there after 12 seasons at Notre Dame, where he went 113-40.

LSU athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement at the time that the firing was performance-related, and that the "high hopes that [Kelly] would lead us to multiple SEC and national championships" never materialized. Woodward, however, was also fired by LSU just days later. He drewcriticism from Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, who insisted that Woodward wouldn't be involved in the hiring of Kelly's replacement.

According to the lawsuit, LSU told Kelly's lawyers that Woodward didn't have the authority to terminate him or make settlement offers to him. The suit also says claims LSU attempted to settle with Kelly multiple times, first for $25 million and then for $30 million, but he declined both offers. He'ssince requested that the school pay the full $54 million buyout. If it's paid in full, Kelly's buyout would be the second-biggest ever paid to a college football coach.

According to ESPN, Kelly's contract includes a "for cause" termination clause that allows for him to be fired due to NCAA rule violations, felony convictions or crimes involving gambling, drugs or alcohol and sexual misconduct, among other things.

"LSU has never claimed that Coach Kelly was terminated for cause and, prior to November 10, 2025, never asserted that he engaged in any conduct that would warrant such a termination," the lawsuit reads. "To the contrary, LSU repeatedly confirmed, both publicly and to Coach Kelly, that the termination was due to the Team's performance, not for cause."

The Tigers, who have now lost three straight and fallen out of the national rankings completely, will host Arkansas next on Saturday.

Grayson Allen's 42-point outburst is the latest highlight in Suns' surprisingly good start to season

PHOENIX (AP) — Grayson Allen stood at the free throw line, soaking in the chants from the Phoenix Suns crowd.

"M-V-P! M-V-P!"

Sure, it was a little tongue-in-cheek hyperbole from the home fans considering the former Duke star has never been more than a solid starter in the NBA. But for one night, the 6-foot-4 guard couldn't be stopped.

Allen scored a career-high 42 points on a franchise-record 10 3-pointers,leading the Suns to a 121-98 winover the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. Even after all those points, it was the MVP chants — along with the game ball — that he'll take from a special night.

"I don't know how many times that's going to happen," Allen said, grinning when recalling the fans' response. "That was pretty cool. I'll never take for granted the amount of support and appreciation I have here."

Allen's outburst was the latest example that the Suns might be little better than expected this season. Phoenix stripped down its roster during the offseason —dealing 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets— but has started the year with a 6-5 record after Monday's win.

The normally stoic Allen broke into a wide grin when he made his 10th 3-pointer of the night with 11:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. He would add two more free throws — while being serenaded with those MVP chants — to match his career high with 40 points and a close-range bucket with 10:05 left made it a career-high 42.

Soon after, his night was done thanks to the Suns' comfortable lead. Allen finished 12 of 17 shooting, including 10 of 15 from 3-point range.

"He makes it look pretty easy," first-year coach Jordan Ott said. "When you have that kind of range, where he's shooting from, it was a career night, a very efficient night. Awesome."

Allen is averaging a career-high 18.6 points through 11 games, which would be a career high by a wide margin if it holds. He's been a good complement to four-time All-Star Devin Booker, who is averaging more than 28 points.

Booker is usually the Suns player garnering the MVP love from Phoenix fans, but for one night, he was happy to cede the spotlight.

"I'll share them every night," Booker said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vit Krejci scored a career-high 28 points off the bench, Kristaps Porzingis added 20 and the Atlanta Hawks opened a four-game road trip with a 105-102 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.

Jalen Johnson had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Hawks overcame a 17-point deficit to win consecutive games for the second time this season. Krejci made a career-best eight 3-pointers in 10 attempts.

Porzingis (illness) and Johnson (quad) both returned after missing Sunday's 20-point home victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, while Trae Young (knee) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (back) remained out.

James Harden had 35 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in the Clippers' fifth straight loss. Ivica Zubac added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Krejci's biggest 3-pointer came with 36 seconds remaining and gave the Hawks a 105-98 lead. Harden converted a four-point play with 25 seconds remaining to get the Clippers within a possession but missed a game-tying 3-point attempt with 12 seconds left.

The Clippers led 36-19 early in the second quarter before the Hawks erased the deficit with a 20-3 run to take a 42-41 lead with 4:09 remaining before the half. Krejci made four 3-pointers in the run, including three consecutive at one point.

The game was tied at 52 at halftime after Krejci made six of Atlanta's seven 3-pointers over the first two quarters. The Hawks pushed in front 79-76 after three quarters.

Harden tied the score 92-92 with 5:01 remaining on consecutive 3-pointers before another 3-pointer from Krejci put the Hawks up 95-92 with 4:25 remaining. Harden scored 19 points in the fourth quarter on 6-of-10 shooting and 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

Oklahoma got a scare with 9:16 remaining when senior center and leading scorer Raegan Beers went down awkwardly fighting for a rebound with Betts and grabbed at her right knee. She returned shortly thereafter and wound up with seven points and 14 rebounds.

Zya Vann had 13 points and six rebounds for Oklahoma (1-1) while Payton Verhulst finished with 16. She knocked down a lone 3-pointer to end the third quarter and pull her team within 59-48 going into the fourth.

These teams faced off in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament with UCLA winning 82-73 to reach the Sweet 16. The Bruins have now won the last three meetings.

Oklahoma had a week between its 84-67 season-opening win against Belmont on Nov. 3, marking the longest break between the first and second games to start a full season — excluding the COVID-19 year — since 2002-03.

Oklahoma hasn't beaten a top-five nonconference opponent since topping No. 3 Duke in the 2001 national semifinal.

UCLA faces North Carolina in the WBCA Challenge at Las Vegas on Thursday, while the Sooners return home to Norman to host Kansas City on Wednesday then North Alabama on Friday in what will be a four-game, six-day stretch.
