NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams is into theU.S. Openwomen's doubles quarterfinals with Leylah Fernandez and now wants her old partner to come back. She says it's time for Serena Williams to come see a match. Williams made the plea for her younger sister to show up aftershe and Fernandezbeat the 12th-seeded duo of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-4 in their third-round match Monday in front of a capacity crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium. "She's so happy for Leylah and I, and she's given us advice," Williams said. "We just need her in the box. So, my message is, 'Serena, you need to show up.'" Williams and Fernandez will play Tuesday against the top-seeded team ofTaylor Townsendand Katerina Siniakova. The Williams sisters won 14 major championships together. Even if Serena chooses not to attend, she's definitely watching. "She gave me a pep talk and made sure to call me today. I was, like, 'You're right. I got it. I got it,'" Venus said. "She's definitely coaching from afar. She's so excited. She gets so nervous watching, and she's got the kids watching. They're all at home, just really on our side." Venus said she was sent a video of her two nieces watching the match and yelling her name. Williams and Fernandez had not played together until last week, when theyreceived a wild-card entryinto the field at the Grand Slam tournament. They are now 3-0and have not lost a set in the process. "We're on the same wavelength, and hopefully we can keep it going," Williams said. With the stands packed at Armstrong and a wait to get in to see Williams and Fernandez, the 45-year-old American and 22-year-old Canadian needed just an hour and 14 minutes to move on. "I have full confidence in Venus, and I hope she has full confidence in me during our match," Fernandez said. "We're just going out there, playing our game: Be offensive, aggressive and ready for the ball." Venus has called Fernandez her best partner other than Serena. She joked that Serena didn't have any advice for Fernandez, the 2021 U.S. Open runner-up in singles. "So I guess you're playing perfect," Williams said to her partner during their press conference. Serena hasn't played since the 2022 U.S. Open. If she does return to Flushing Meadows, it sounds as if Venus would expect her to bring a racket. "If she came, it would be a dream for both of us and we'd have her on the court coaching.," Venus said. "We'd force her to hit, even though she doesn't hit often. It's probably best she doesn't come because we'd probably bully her." ___ AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis

Padres reliever Jason Adam carted off field with ruptured quadriceps tendonNew Foto - Padres reliever Jason Adam carted off field with ruptured quadriceps tendon

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Padres reliever Jason Adam ruptured a tendon in his left quadriceps and was carted off the field Monday, a major blow to San Diego's dominant bullpen. Adam was injured in the seventh inning ofa 4-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. One of several All-Star relievers on the team, Adam said he still needs to get an MRI for confirmation "but that sounds like six to nine months, so the season's probably done." The injury comes as the Padres are chasing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The loss dropped the Padres 2 1/2 games behind the idle Dodgers. San Diego currently holds the second National League wild-card spot. The Padres became the first big league team to send three relievers to the All-Star Game when Adam, closer Robert Suarez and left-hander Adrián Morejón were selected for the Midsummer Classic. Among general manager A.J. Preller's several trade-deadline pickups was hard-throwing Mason Miller from the Athletics, who was an All-Star in 2024. "I told A.J., I'm really glad you went out and got Mason," said Adam, who was on crutches with his left leg in a big brace when he spoke with reporters. "That's all I've really processed. This bullpen's so deep. Of all the bullpens in the league to not need me, it's this one. So I'm excited to cheer those guys on. It's a family out there, so I'm excited." Adam collapsed as he tried to turn toward Gunnar Henderson's chopper that went off the mound for an infield single. He immediately signaled for an athletic trainer and grabbed his left knee. After receiving attention from trainers, Adam was helped to his feet and onto a cart, with his left leg propped up on the seat. Cameras caught Adam saying he "felt something pop." "I felt the pop right away, felt like the quad rolled up, so I kind of knew it wasn't good," Adam said. "It was in pain at first and then you kind of come to and you're like, 'Hey, did we get the out?' And then it's just waiting to hear how long." Adam said he "went to plant to go back and grab the ball, because it was kind of a chopper to my right, and that's when I felt the pop and it kind of gave out and I fell." Adam (8-4) took the loss. He has a 1.93 ERA in 65 appearances. The game was tied at 3 when Henderson's hit put runners on first and second. Adam was replaced by Suarez, who got the second out of the inning before allowing Dylan Beavers' go-ahead single. Miller called Adam's injury "really heartbreaking." "You hate to see anybody go down with anything, especially something like that. It's just a baseball oddity, a slow-hit ball like that. It's nothing he did, just his instincts taking over," Miller said. "In his absence, guys are going to have to step up and fill that role. We certainly have guys like that." Said starter Dylan Cease: "It seems like he pitches every day. He's been amazing. It's terrible to see." Padres manager Mike Shildt called Adam "an absolute workhorse" who has "gotten huge outs for us." Shildt also said Adam is a leader in the clubhouse. "We've got a great clubhouse. We've got great dudes. I love him to death. Jason is as solid a guy as there is. He's well-respected and means a lot to us. We'll miss him and we'll have to figure it out," Shildt said. ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Sinner back in US Open quarters by routing Bublik, only player besides Alcaraz to beat him in 2025New Foto - Sinner back in US Open quarters by routing Bublik, only player besides Alcaraz to beat him in 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — Jannik Sinner was so dominant Monday night at theU.S. Openthat his opponent had to remind him after the match that he's not that bad of a player. Sinner sure made Alexander Bublik look like one, though. Sinner overwhelmed the only playerother than Carlos Alcarazwho has defeated him this season, routing Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 to return to the quarterfinals of the tournament he won last year. The top-seeded Sinner's victory took just 1 hour, 21 minutes, the second-shortest completed match in the tournament. A first-round victory for Tomas Machac was a minute shorter. "At times I felt like today I was playing some great tennis, and I managed to break him very early, which then gave me the confidence to serve a little bit better and play from the back of the court a bit better," Sinner said. "It was a faster, or a fast match." Sinner lost to Bublik in June in Halle, Germany, in a warm-up tournament before Wimbledon, but that was played on a grass court. Trying to beat the defending U.S. Open champion on a hard court is an entirely different story — and almost impossible these days. Sinner has won 25 straight Grand Slam matches on that surface, including the last two Australian Open titles, along with his first U.S. Open trophy last year. He will face fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 10 seed, on Wednesday. The other quarterfinal that day will pit No. 8 Alex de Minaur against No. 25 Felix Auger-Aliassime. Bublik, the No. 23 seed from Kazakhstan, had been one of the hottest players in tennis, with an ATP Tour-leading 11 straight victories and three titles, which is tied for the second-best this year behind Alcaraz's six. He had won all 55 service games coming into this match, yet Sinner broke him eight times. Bublik could only smile at times, including after the match, when he told Sinner at the net that "I'm not bad." But he wasn't nearly good enough against Sinner, who had an 86-46 advantage in points won. Bublik helped by committing 13 double-faults. Sinner noted that Bublik had a late finish Saturday night in his five-set victory over No. 14 seed Tommy Paul, and tried to test his energy level Monday in his first night match of this tournament. "I tried to move him around, trying to see how he moves, trying to put it more on the physical side," Sinner said. "Today I played some good tennis at times. At times he gave me some free points." Sinner improved to 35-4 this year. Alcaraz beat him in the French Open final and also in Rome and Cincinnati — where Sinner was ill and had to stop playing in the first set. ___ AP tennis:https://apnews.com/hub/tennis ,

Xi to flaunt China's vision of new global order at military paradeNew Foto - Xi to flaunt China's vision of new global order at military parade

By Laurie Chen BEIJING (Reuters) -Chinese President Xi Jinping will host his country's largest-ever military parade this week, as he seeks to recast Beijing as the custodian of a post-U.S. international order at a time of deep geopolitical uncertainty. More than 20 world leaders including Russia's Vladimir Putin and reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will gather in Beijing for the September 3 "Victory Day" event marking 80 years since Japan's defeat at the end of World War Two. The highly choreographed spectacle aims to project China's military might and diplomatic clout amid doubts over the United States' global role, as President Donald Trump slashes foreign aid, retreats from international institutions and wages a sweeping trade war on allies and rivals alike. The unprecedented joint appearance of Xi flanked by Putin and Kim overseeing the showcase of cutting-edge equipment like hypersonic missiles and drones, may well be the defining image of the parade, an "Axis of Upheaval" defying the West. For Kim, who crossed into China on his special train early on Tuesday, it will be his first major multilateral event and the first time a North Korean leader has attended a Chinese military parade in 66 years. "The presence of Vladimir Putin, (Iran's) Masoud Pezeshkian, and Kim Jong Un underscores China's role as the world's leading authoritarian power," said Neil Thomas, a Chinese politics expert at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis. The increase in leaders from Central Asian, West Asian and Southeast Asian countries attending this year's parade compared to the last one in 2015 highlight's Beijing's progress in regional diplomacy, Thomas added. Proceedings will kick off at 9 a.m. (0100GMT), according to China's official Xinhua news agency. Slovakian Prime Minster Robert Fico and Serbia's Aleksandar Vucic, both critical of sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine, are the only Western leaders attending. Trump, whose own June military parade drew the largest nationwide protests since his return to power, has repeatedly talked up his close relations with Xi, Putin and Kim but has failed to make any major diplomatic breakthroughs. 'MEMORY WAR' Earlier this week, Xi rallied leaders of developing nations to advocate for a more equal, multipolar world and promote the "correct historical perspective" of World War Two at a regional security forum in the port city of Tianjin. The parade too is part of a "memory war" in which China and Russia offer an alternative history to a Western narrative they believe underplays their role in fighting fascist forces, the Brookings Institution wrote in a paper last week. Xi has cast the war as a major turning point in the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" in which it overcame Japan's invasion to become an economic and geopolitical powerhouse. While some residents have requested patriotic and military-themed haircuts ahead of the parade, such enthusiasm may be not be shared by all ordinary Chinese people. Downtown Beijing has been virtually paralysed by security measures and traffic controls in the weeks leading up to the parade. Nationwide, local governments have mobilised tens of thousands of volunteers and Communist Party members to monitor for any signs of potential unrest ahead of the parade, estimates based on online recruitment notices show. Taiwanese officials on Monday estimated Beijing was spending $5 billion - the equivalent of 2% of its entire defence budget - on the parade. A July post on Zhihu, China's equivalent of Quora, asked users what they looked forward to most about the parade. "I hope they'll spend less money and use it towards improving people's livelihoods," read one viral response which has since been deleted. Others had urged the government to declare a national holiday, a move it didn't take. (Reporting by Laurie Chen; Editing by John Geddie and Lincoln Feast.)

In addition to the ouster of Monarez, three other top CDC officials resignedin protest ofKennedy's leadership including his direction on vaccines. Trump said he's been shown "extraordinary" information from Pfizer that detail the positive effects vaccines had in stopping the spread of the coronavirus but questioned why the same data hasn't been showed to the public. More:Former CDC directors say RFK Jr.'s actions should alarm every American' "Why not??? They go off to the next 'hunt' and let everyone rip themselves apart, including Bobby Kennedy Jr. and CDC, trying to figure out the success or failure of the Drug Companies Covid work," Trump said. Some say he deserves blame for its turmoil. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican who chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, applauded Trump for pushing "radical transparency"of COVID vaccine data. Cassidy, a physician, was the key vote to secure Kennedy's confirmation in February after expressing reservations about Kennedy's statements skeptical of vaccines but voting for him regardless. "We need to know what the data says and where it is coming from, so the CDC and HHS can make the best decisions," Cassidy said in a statement. "People who criticizePresident Trump's Operation Warp Speed typically misrepresent and carefully select 'their facts.' We should be honest about the success of Operation Warp Speed." Cassidy last week called for the CDC's vaccine advisory panelto indefinitely postpone its next meeting, set for Sept. 18, amid the turmoil in the agency and allegations from the CDC officials who resigned over "the lack of scientific process being followed."
