At least 19 people were killed when a section of highway collapsed in southern China this morning.

More than a dozen cars fell down a slope when a 60ft chunk of road caved in early on Wednesday, according to local authorities.

Witnesses told local media they heard a loud noise and saw a hole open up several metres wide behind them after driving past the section of the road just before it collapsed.

Video and photos in local media showed smoke and fire at the scene.

Mangled highway rails can be seen slanting downward into the flames.

Blackened cars could also be seen on the slope leading down from the highway in Meizhou city in Guangdong province.

Rescue workers have taken 30 people to the hospital, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

It added that the lives of those being treated were 'not currently at risk' but gave no further details on their injuries.

Around 500 rescuers were sent to the site, according to CCTV.

The cause of the collapse has not been disclosed.

However, Guangdong has been hit by a slew of extreme weather events in recent weeks.

Those have ranged from heavy rain, to flooding and a deadly tornado.

Last week, flash floods killed four people and displaced 110,000 others.

They also damaged dozens of houses, closed schools and forced flight cancellations and delays.

A toddler has been killed in a tragic accident after a bouncy castle he was playing on was swept into the air by a sudden gust of wind.

The parents of the two-year-old boy, believed to be named Bodhi Naaf, are said to be grappling with 'unimaginable grief' following the tragedy, which took place near  Casa Grande, Arizona in the United States.

Several more children were also playing on the inflatable when it blew away, one of whom was taken to hospital with injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

A statement from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office read: 'Several children were playing in a bounce house when a strong gust of wind sent it airborne into the neighbouring lot.

'A two-year-old child was transported to the hospital where he passed away.'

A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to support Bodhi's parents Karl and Christy, who are currently expecting their second child in late May.

The campaign, which has raised more than $150,000 (£120,000) so far, says the donations are intended to 'help Karl and Cristy focus on grieving their beloved Bodhi while also preparing for the new chapter in their lives'.

Family friend Ashley Al-Khouri said: 'On April 27th, while playing in a bounce house, Bodhi was lifted airborne by a sudden gust of wind, resulting in fatal injuries.

'This devastating loss has left Karl and Cristy grappling with unimaginable grief.

'Adding to their challenges, Cristy is due to give birth to their second child on May 31, 2024. Amidst their sorrow, they face the daunting task of preparing for the arrival of their newborn.'

Bodhi's father Karl works as a firefighter at the Phoenix Fire Department, who said in a statement: 'We are all devastated by this tremendous loss of life. The fire service prides itself on being one big family.

'Our membership and our department are doing everything we can to support Karl and Cristy during this difficult time.'

A restaurant packed with gas cylinders exploded and set off a fire that killed at least nine people in the Lebanese capital of Beirut this evening.

Footage shared by the city's fire brigade shows thick smoke billowing out of Pizza Secrets along Bechara El Khoury.

Captain Ali Negm told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that it appears two gas canisters ruptured inside, causing a fire that trapped eight people inside.

They died of suffocation, the captain said.

Among those who died in the fire were Imad Ahmed Shuqair from Mays al-Jabal, Aya Hassan Marmar of Ansar, Walid Muhammad Dankour from Kafr Benin, Hassan Harmoush from Baalbek-Hermel and Ali Musa Jab.

Residents and passers-by packed the street to see firefighters tackle the flames, with fears the fire could spread to the government departments, restaurants, and shops that make up the densely populated city centre.

The sign of the small restaurant was completely gnawed at by the fire, with only the letter 'a' of pizza and 'ts' of secrets left.

In a social media statement at about 8pm local time, fire officials said there was two wounded and eight victims who died of suffocation inside the restaurant'.

Insiders told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the number of dead has since risen to nine and four people were wounded.

Those who survived the inferno are now being treated at Al-Rum Hospital and Rizk Hospital.

Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi toured the site and confirmed a criminal investigation will take place, the Lebanese government's National News Agency said.

Joining Mawlawi at the site was Parliament member Ibrahim Mneimneh who questioned safety standards at the restaurant.

The accident 'shows this place was not in line with public safety standards'.

The 14-year-old boy stabbed to death with a sword in a terrifying unprovoked attack in Hainault went to same school as Nottingham stabbing victim Grace O'Malley Kumar.

The boy was killed near Hainault Tube station yesterday morning after a man crashed his van and stabbed five people in an untargeted attack.

He attended private school Bancroft's in Woodford Green, where Ms O'Malley-Kumar, who was stabbed to death in June, was a former student.

The school's flag is flying at half mast today.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the schoolboy was unknown to the attacker.

A science teacher at the Holy Family Catholic School in Waltham has been confirmed to be the mum of the boy.

In a letter to parents, the school said Mrs Anjorin's son was 'taken from this life suddenly' on his way to school.

The statement read: 'Dear Parents/Carers, It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of the death of the child of one of our staff members.

'Mrs Anjorin's son was taken from this life suddenly this morning on his way to school.

'Please keep Mrs Anjorin, her husband and their other children in your prayers. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.'

Ms O'Malley-Kumar's parents, said on Good Morning Britain, they hope to offer their support to the boy's family.

Her father Dr Sanjoy Kumar said: 'You can't even imagine what the parents are going through. It's the most difficult thing for the parents to endure. We've been enduring this for many months now.

'I can tell you that the distraught the family are feeling is only felt by a few like us that have lost children in these absolutely appalling circumstances.'

Four other victims, including two police officers, remain in hospital but their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 36-year-old man remains in hospital after he was arrested 22 minutes following the first 999 call.

Officers have not yet been able to interview him due to his injuries.

Neighbour James Fernando, who witnesses the attack, recalled the moment Daniel, was killed.

He said the suspect has asked one of his neighbours to 'take the telephone from him to tell whoever was on the phone his location'.

He added: 'Within two seconds after that she's realised something isn't right, started running and he's pulled a samurai sword from the back of his trouser.

'She's shouted to the other neighbour – a Nigerian boy who was on his way to school.

'It's quite traumatising now. I can't stop envisioning the boy's face.'

Footage shows police approaching him as he brandishes his weapon, before Tasering and arresting him.

In an update yesterday, Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said: 'It is with great sadness that I confirm one of those injured in the incident, a 14-year-old boy, has died from their injuries.

'He was taken to hospital after being stabbed and sadly died a short while after. The child's family are being supported firstly by my local officers and now with some specialist officers.'

Witnesses have described the moment they saw a man armed with a huge sword walking from house to house.

Manpreet Singh, manager of Redbridge Radio Cars, was at work in the taxi firm's office at Hainault Tube station when the attack began.

Mr Singh told Metro: 'I saw about six or seven people going in and out of Franklyn Gardens and people coming up to the train station saying there was a guy with a machete.

'It looked like there was one man who had stabbed someone and the other people in the street were bystanders on their way to work who had tried to fight him off.

'A guy walked up the road who had been stabbed in his neck. He was saying "I've been stabbed, I've been stabbed" and walking towards the police.'

He continued: 'Because of the size of the weapon it looked like they tried to intervene but not been able to fight him off.

'When we came out the police cars were there and the guy came running from Franklyn Gardens towards Thurlow Gardens. He tried to get into a house but there was a dog there.

'He tried to get into another house but the police got him under control by tasering him.'

The Metropolitan Police said officers are not looking for more suspects and the attack 'does not appear to be terror-related'.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said: 'This must have been a terrifying incident for those concerned.

'I know the wider community will be feeling shock and alarm.

'People will want to know what has happened and will we provide more information as soon as we can.'

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the foot with his police officer mother's gun.

The boy opened fire on himself as his mother, a Miami-Dade County Schools cop, was preparing food at their home in Florida, according to the Homestead Police Department.

He was airlifted from the home on Southeast 10th Street in Homestead just before 2pm on Sunday to a hospital in Kendall. The boy was listed in stable condition.

Detectives located a gun on a kitchen counter with a large amount of blood close by, stated an arrest report obtained by NBC6.

The boy's mother, identified as Stephanie Jerez, has been charged with child neglect with great bodily harm.

Her weapon was personally owned and not a firearm she used for work, according to police.

Jerez's lawyer, Robert Buschel, said that her 'son is recovering well'.

'The judicial system and police department will understand that this is a tragedy that does not require additional punishment,' he stated.

On Momday, Miami-Dade County Public Schools said they were 'aware of a non-school related incident' involving an officer over the weekend.

'The officer has been arrested by the Homestead Police Department,' stated the school district. 'The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department has relieved the officer of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.'

Jerez appeared in court on Monday and her bond was set at $5,000. She has been ordered not to buy, use, possess or carry firearms or ammunition unless it is related to work.

The Homestead Police Department stated 'takes cases involving child endangerment very seriously, and we are committed to ensuring the safety and well being of all children'.

In addition, the department urged all gun owners to 'securely store firearms and to educate themselves and their families about gun safety'.

The boy shot himself just weeks after a three-year-old girl fatally shot herself in the eye after getting ahold of her father's unsecured gun in their home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
