A small Illinois town claims to be the 'birthplace of Monopoly' as the board game's original inventor got the idea for the game there. Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Magie-Phillips was born in Macomb, roughly 85 miles outside of Springfield, in May 1866. The small town of nearly 15,000 claims to be the birthplace of the famous Monopoly game as Magie-Phillips was a resident of the town and the original board design has a striking similarity to the town's square, according to Forgottonia.
