Even in a city famous for the scale of its exhibitions, this was jaw-dropping. The ocean was brought into the heart of Rome. Ships rammed one another, sailors boarded the enemy's vessels and fought with cold steel on rocking decks. Men fell screaming into the water, dragged down by their armour.
