Frost dusted New York as the taxi headed eastward, away from the hospital. Three in the morning, December 8. Tired beyond words. I vaguely remember getting out of the taxi, the pricks of cold like needles on my face. Suitcases and overstuffed trash bags filled the trunk and back seat: Diana's clothes and underwear, her laptop and pill regimen, her prayer journals, her motivational posters, family photos. I struggled to unload everything onto the street, right outside our apartment on 22nd Street.
