Around 100 guests were struck down with food poisoning at a lavish wedding reception – thought to be caused by mushrooms.

The celebration, at the Jardín La Estancia banquet hall in Cuernavaca, south of Mexico City, turned into a disaster when dozens of guests fell ill shortly after eating a four course meal.

The food, which was sourced from an outside catering company, was served following the wedding ceremony.

Victims complained of stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting and diarrhoea and video showed guests sat bent over while waiting for ambulances to arrive.

Other clips show several well-dressed attendees being loaded into ambulances, and a young girl lying in a hospital bed later.

Witnesses said they suspect the poisoning was caused by the wild mushrooms served on the menu, which were served alongside with goat cheese and tomato coulis.

Concerned guests called the emergency services and multiple attendees were taken to hospital by ambulance and private cars.

Those sent to hospital were sent home after around five hours in treatment.

Morelos Health Services spokesperson Héctor Barón Olivares said the victims were discharged after receiving the necessary treatment for the effects of food poisoning.

He said: 'They were treated immediately, kept under observation, and then discharged. Various probably causes will be analysed, such as bacteria in the food.'

An investigation into the cause of the illness outbreak is ongoing.

Guests said men were served a different meal to women – but both fell seriously ill.

In April, one woman died and two others were taken to hospital in Australia after drinking a suspected 'mushroom drink' at a wellness retreat.

The death allegedly occurred at the Soul Barn, an 'alternative and holistic health service' that offers 'sound healing and workshops', according to The Age.

And last year, three people who attended a family lunch on July 29 died shortly afterwards of suspected mushroom poisoning.

Erin Patterson from Leongatha has been charged with three counts of murder and attempted murder. She has denied all wrongdoing.
