The Idea of You trailer

The first official trailer for The Idea of You officially dropped on March 7, offering our first glimpse at the steamy love story. Watch it below:

The Idea of You plot

In The Idea of You, we meet 40-year-old single mum Solène (Anne Hathaway) — who is forced to chaperone her teenage daughter along to Coachella after her ex bails at the last minute. Her daughter is abuzz about seeing August Moon — the hottest boy band in the world — live on stage, so Solène goes along, unaware of how her life is about to change. At the festival, she has a chance encounter, running into none other than 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon — and there's an immediate spark.

The pair begin a whirlwind romance in spite of their nearly-20-year age gap — but as the logline reads, "it isn't long before Hayes' superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for".

Who is in The Idea of You?

Anne Hathaway is taking on the leading role of 40-year-old single mum Solène. Throughout her career, Hathaway has proven herself more than capable of bringing the chemistry and drama to a romantic flick — from her early days in The Princess Diaries franchise to 2004's Ella Enchanted and even 2011's (critically-panned, audience-loved) One Day — and we're sure The Idea of You will be no exception.

Opposite Hathaway, 29-year-old British actor Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes Campbell, Solène's boy band love interest. Galitzine has been on the up and up in the past year, appearing as the delightfully irritating meathead Jeff in the critically-acclaimed Bottoms, as well as the royally-loveable Prince Henry in another Prime Video romance novel adaptation, Red, White & Royal Blue.

Also among the cast are Ella Rubin, who plays Solène's daughter Izzy and who recently appeared in Masters of the Air, The Girl From Plainville and the recent Gossip Girl reboot; and Annie Mumulo, who has appeared in Barbie, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and who wrote 2011's Bridesmaids, as Solène's friend Tracy.

Is The Idea of You based on a true story?

The Idea of You isn't officially based on a true story, but it is based on a novel — which itself is allegedly inspired by fanfiction.

American actor and author Robinne Lee published The Idea of You in 2017, and though it took a moment, the novel went viral in 2020, becoming a mid-pandemic hit thanks to its fantastical narrative — we all needed a little escapism, right? Lee was inspired by her own experiences as an actor who had spent more than 20 years in Hollywood, and who had first-hand experience of the shift in how she was perceived due to her age: No longer hot or desirable, just the mum type. So she wrote a book in which she reverts that narrative — the middle-aged mum is not only desired, she is the object of desire for a hot young sex god (with whom she shares plenty of X-rated sex scenes, for which the book earned its virality).

After it hit the mainstream, readers and critics alike immediately began to wonder where Lee had drawn inspiration from for the storyline. A tattooed British boy band singer? All signs were pointing straight towards Harry Styles, who has been the object of desire in many an amateur fanfic since he burst onto the scene in boy band One Direction on The X Factor in 2010. While Lee maintains that the novel is more based on her own fantasies rather than fanfiction, she does admit that Styles served as at least a little inspiration.

In 2017, she told a blogger that she had come across "the face of a boy I'd never seen in a band I'd never paid attention to" while YouTube surfing, realising that "he often dated older women, and so the seed was planted".

In a 2020 interview, she said that Hayes "into my dream guy … like Prince Harry, meets Harry [Styles]", with a few others peppered in. And yet, "this was never supposed to be a book about Harry Styles … It was supposed to be a story about a woman approaching 40 and reclaiming her sexuality and rediscovering herself, just at the point that society traditionally writes women off as desirable and viable and whole."

Galitzine, who plays Hayes, says that he never made the comparison between his character and Styles. "But people really like to make it," he admitted at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars Party. "Hayes Campbell, the man I'm playing, is a very different character and we want him to exist in his own world."
