The Patriots' cutie-pie quarterback, the Seahawks' chance at redemption and Bad Bunny's culture war halftime show: Your small talk guide to the Super Bowl

Are you a football fan who has no idea who Bad Bunny is? Or are you a pop culture enthusiast who's excited about the concert on Sunday but not sure what else the fuss is about? We get it. How can one person contain such multitudes?

Yahoo Entertainment

Super Bowl 60 is Sunday, and no matter what your interests are (besides our great national unifiers of pizza and buffalo wings), you won't want to miss out on the chit-chat come Monday morning.

The big game has, in years past, yielded countless big moments —pulse-pounding last-minute victories, lexicon-shapingviral commercialsandunforgettable halftime shows. If this is the first sporting event you've tuned into all year or your first time ever seeing what Charlie Puth's face looks like, we'll help you excel at small talk at your Super Bowl party and at the office on Monday.

Let's start with the basics: In between extremely expensive commercials, the New England Patriots are up against the Seattle Seahawks. They're playing at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where, coincidentally, there was alow-key earthquakeearlier this week. Halfway through the game, Bad Bunny, fresh off ahuge night at the Grammys, will take the stage.

Now, let's talk about the actual sports.

Conversation starter: Who are you rooting for and why?

Technically, this Super Bowl is a rematch between the two teams that played in 2015 — seriously,more2010s nostalgia.Back in the day, the Seahawks were poised to win, when quarterback Russell Wilson threw a heartbreakinginterception at the 1-yard line— that means the Patriots caught the ball and won!! I personally consider this game to be Starbucks vs. Dunkin'. We'll make the case for both teams.

The Seahawks

If you're looking for a good story, you should be rooting for the blue and green. As my colleague, Seahawks superfan Taryn Ryder, explains to me, quarterback Sam Darnold waswritten off for yearsand mocked by the media for months (OK, maybe he did deserve it for that one time he said he was"seeing ghosts" on a bad night), only to end up at the big game. Fans have been waiting a decade to get back to the Super Bowl for a shot at redemption after Wilson's last-second flop all those years ago.

If your goal is to cheer for the team that will actually win — and sometimes in this cruel world, that really is the vibe — you'll want tobet on the Seahawks. They've got the edge in every category: defense, scoring, coaching and so on. Honestly, this could be boring.

The Patriots

They might technically be the underdogs in this particular game, but I know I'm not the only person who thinks that the Patriots have a sinister aura in general that demands to be toppled, like Goliath in the Bible or Bruno Mars at the Grammys. This Super Bowl is their shot at a record-breaking seventh win — greedy, much? — and they've had anextremely easy pathto the big game, with a schedule packed with minimally impressive wins.

On the other hand, their baby-faced quarterback Drake Maye is a compelling character — the 23-year-old sweetie pie has a much softer reputation than Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, the QB-coach combo that ruled over the much-maligned Patriots dynasty before it all fell apart in 2020. (As a side note, I will confess that I am taken by the lovelorn thirst postingboth men have beendoing on Instagramlately). The Patriots could redeem themselves with this new lineup, but that uncanny continued success could also cement their villain status forever.

Wait, who are these people?

Drake Maye, in baseball cap, looks happy as snowflakes fall around him.
  • Drake Maye: The Patriots quarterback could become the youngest starter to win a Super Bowl. Pair his harmless demeanor with the fact he's really good at his job, and you've got a compelling character.

  • Sam Darnold: He's been the quarterback for at least five different teams, bouncing around until he landed with the Seahawks last year, after being dumped by the Minnesota Vikings for someone younger — go figure! He's only 28 but has the vibe of a weathered old sea captain to me.

  • Stefon Diggs: The Patriots' wide receiver is not as good as he once was, but he's still really good, and that's reason enough to keep an eye on him.

  • Cooper Kupp: The MVP of the 2022 Super Bowl is back for more on a new team. Dropped by the Rams last year, the Seahawks' superstar wide receiver has a lot to prove. Unfortunately, he looks a lot like Jake Paul.

  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba: The Seahawks have a lot of talented offensive players, but he's the best. This has absolutely no bearing on anything, but his birthday is Valentine's Day, and I think that's sweet.

  • Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and Patriots coach Mike Vrabel: If I'm being honest, both Mikes look very similar to me. Macdonald is interesting because he's pretty new to this whole NFL coaching thing and really good at defensive play calling. Vrabel is a former NFL player who likes pushing people's buttons and unexpectedly led the Patriots back on the path to greatness.

  • Will Campbell and Morgan Moses: The oldest and youngest players on the Patriots have a surprisingly sweet friendship. Watch for their chemistry on the offensive line.

Hold your own: Expect backlash to Bad Bunny's halftime show

As the most-streamed artist in the world and the recent winner of the music industry's biggest honor, Bad Bunny is still a controversial choice to headline the Super Bowl halftime show.

The stage has become abattleground for the culture warslately, with naysayers — includingpoliticiansandmembers of the Trump administration— saying Bad Bunny's music isn't American. Which is weird, because the 31-year-old reggaeton artist is an American citizen from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Bad Bunny does sing predominantly in Spanish, which is also spoken byan estimated 41 millionpeople in the U.S.

Ananonymous survey of 58 NFL players conducted by the Athleticfound that more than 40% of them didn't like the choice of Bad Bunny as a halftime show performer. One respondent said they'd prefer "anyone who's synonymous with football and football culture." Bad Bunny never brought his DEBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS World Tour to the continental U.S., saying he was concerned thatImmigration and Customs Enforcement would target his concerts. At the Grammys on Feb. 1, he used his acceptance speech to speak out against ICE, adding, "We're not savage, we're not animals, we're not aliens. … We are humans, and we are Americans."

Days later, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodellstood by him, saying that Bad Bunny had been chosen to perform because he's "one of the great artists in the world" and because his "platform is used to unite people and to be able to bring people together."

It's hard to imagine anything making bigger headlines than Bad Bunny and how people respond to him, but he isn't the only performer of the night. Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile and Coco Jones will perform the various standard patriotic anthems before the game begins. Just before that,Green Day will performat an opening ceremony honoring 60 years of Super Bowl history. Given their political outspokenness, they were a controversial pick as well —President Trump isn't a fan— but their audience before the game will be much smaller.

Deep cut: Who's going to be spotted in the stands

Celebrity fans

The turnout of famous people at this Super Bowl probably won't be as substantial as it was last year —Taylor Swift and her squadhave the year off — but we're predicting a few celebrity sightings. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Jon Bon Jovi and Mark Wahlberg are all Patriots fans, and Seahawks enthusiasts include Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Cardi B, swaddled in a huge gray fur jacket and wearing a green wig under a baseball cap, holds up two fingers on the field.

Then there's of course Cardi B, who is dating the Patriots superstar Stefon Diggs. She just performed onSaturday Night Liveand kicks off her Little Miss Drama Tour a few days after the game, so she's having a bit of a moment, whether or not her boyfriend's team plays well.

The WAGs

The wives and girlfriends of players are showmen in their own right, and none of them are having as big of a breakout year as Ann Michael Maye, Drake Maye's wife. The couple has been together since middle school, and she's beenblowing up on TikTokwith her aggressively normal baking and lifestyle content.

Sam Darnold's fiancée, Katie Hoofnagle, isn't such an enthusiastic social media poster — "I'm here so I won't get fined," her Instagram bio states, invoking an iconic 2015 line from Marshawn Lynch, the former Seahawks player (andBottomsstar).

Other notable names includeTori Gibson(married to Patriots running back Antonio Gibson),Riley Whayland(who's dating Patriots tight end CJ Dippre),Ahna Jaims Kreitinger(engaged to Seahawks safety Ty Okada) andHailey Louise Williams(married to Seahawks defensive end Leonard Williams). I'm addicted to watching them log the subtle chicness of the mundane parts of their lives on TikTok. Making smoothies is so much cooler when you're doing it before a big game.

Hot take: The commercials are becoming a bit predictable

The most expensive day in TV advertising is often a showcase for tearjerking, thought-provoking or otherwise entertaining commercials, but lately, they'vebecome a bit predictable. How many times can we pretend to be surprised by a celebrity spokesperson doing a bit about the one thing they're known for, like Ben Affleck for loving Dunkin' or Sabrina Carpenter for having boy problems?

I, for one, think we deserve more than the same-old tear-inducing beer ad or headline-grabbing stunt from a famous person. Stop forcingnostalgic mainstays to parade around in old costumesand make me feel something, or else I'll be forced to take my bathroom breaks during the commercials like this is just some regular day on TV.

"When I got my second bedroom, I immediately loved my husband twice as much," she said, sharing her advice for New York City couples who don't have space to spare.

"Well, they could get separate beds. They could put a wall up. They could sleep on the convertible couch," she suggested. "I don't really have a solution, but there's a lot of New Yorkers who have two bedrooms and one set up as a den or TV room. I think that's a misuse."

The "Jealous" singer emotionally reflected on their daughterMalti Marie's harrowing first momentsafter her premature birthin January 2022.

"She came to the world under sort of very intense circumstances, which I've not really talked about ever," the "Gut Punch" singer shared in a Feb. 4 interview on theOn Purpose with Jay Shettypodcast. "But we were expecting her to arrive in April of the year she was born and we get a call that it's gonna be sooner. So, we basically went into action and she was born via surrogate."

"We got to the hospital, and she came out, she was one pound, 11 ounces," theJonas Brothersmember added. "And purple basically. They—these angels at the NICU, kind of resuscitated her in that moment and got her taken care of really quickly and intubated and everything else."

Nick, 33, revealed that he and Priyanka traded 12-hour shifts at the hospital, where Malti spent the first three months of her life receiving around the clock care and treatment before making a full recovery.

More from E! Online

"But she fought every day for three and a half months," Nick—who married Priyanka in 2018—said. "And, you know, slowly started to gain some weight. And after six blood transfusions, she was doing great and we got to take her home."

Still, four years later, Nick has memories of Malti's time of recovering in the hospital.

"I could still sort of like, smell it," he said. "There's always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day, and to see sort of other families going through similar situations."

Today, the "Close" singer's daughter exhibits the same strength she showed previously.

"I feel like she knows how she entered the world and what that first chapter of her life was like," he said. "And so every day is a gift, and you can actually feel it on her in the way that she behaves and how exciting everything is."

"I don't know how much she remembers," he added. "Probably nothing, spiritually I believe that there's gratitude in her and that she's incredible."

For Nick, seeing Malti live out her toddler years has been an emotional blessing.

"Our daughter's incredible, she's just, she's magic in every sense of the world," he said through tears. "She just turned four a couple weeks ago. It blows my mind, I look at her and I can see her future. I just know she's going to do amazing things, and I'm awestruck that I get to experience her magic. She's just perfect in every way."

The notable names in the Epstein files

A slew of notable individuals appear in the latest Justice Department release ofJeffrey Epstein files, and the documents reveal new details about Epstein's ties to figures including Bill Gates, Elon Musk and former Prince Andrew.

CBS News

The documents were released on Friday, more than 40 days after theDec. 19 legal deadlinefor the Justice Department to release all files in line with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Congress passed and President Trump signed in November.

Earlier batchesoffilesincluded emails and photos of prominent figures, including President Trump, former President Bill Clinton, Mick Jagger, Woody Allen, Larry Summers and others. They have not been accused of wrongdoing.

CBS News is still reviewing the documents independently and in collaboration with journalists from NBC, Versant and The Associated Press.

Here is a look at some of the notable figures who appear in the latest files:

Former Prince Andrew

The latest materials include photos of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who wasformerly known as Prince Andrew, on all fours over an unidentified woman on the floor. No context for the photos is provided, and it is unclear when and where they were taken.

In one of the photos, in which they are fully clothed, he is touching her abdomen. In another, he stares directly into the camera while crouching over her.

Images from an undated and redacted document released by the U.S. Department of Justice on Jan. 30, 2026, show Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, leaning over an unidentified person. / Credit: Justice Department/AP/CBS News

Andrew, the brother of King Charles and son of the late Queen Elizabeth, has repeatedly denied all wrongdoing, but he has been stripped of his royal titles and duties in the wake of the scandal.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday suggested that Mountbatten-Windsor should tell U.S. investigators what he knows about Epstein's activities.

"In terms of testifying, I've always said anybody who's got information should be prepared to share that information in whatever form they're asked to do that, because you can't be victim-centered if you're not prepared to do that," Starmer said.

Mountbatten-Windsor has ignored a request from House Oversight Committee members for a "transcribed interview" about his "long-standing friendship" with Epstein.

CBS News has reached out to his representatives for comment.

Emailsexchanged between Elon Musk and Epstein more than a decade ago indicate they sometimes spent time around the holidays together in the Caribbean, and may have visited Epstein's island at least once.

In a Nov. 25, 2012 email, Epstein asked Musk how many people he would be bringing for the helicopter ride to the island. Musk responded, "Probably just Talulah and me." Talulah Riley was Musk's wife at the time.

Musk then asked, "What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?"

On Christmas Day,he sent another note, again asking about parties: "Do you have any parties planned? I've been working to the edge of sanity this year, and so, once my kids head home after Christmas, I really want to hit the party scene in St. Barts or elsewhere and let loose. The invitation is much appreciated, but a peaceful island experience is the opposite of what I'm looking for."

The next year, in aNovember 2013 email, Epstein asked Musk if he would come to the Caribbean for Christmas. He said Woody Allen was with him and that Musk "might enjoy" the trip.

"Yes," Musk responded.

Although CBS News has not independently verified that Musk attended, the following year, in aSeptember 2014 email, Epstein asked Musk if he would join for Christmas "again" in St. Barts.

"Don't know," Musk responded.

At the end of October, Epstein's assistant, Lesley Groff, sent a schedulereminder to Epsteinthat noted Musk "is to go to the island on Dec. 6th," although a subsequent email on Dec. 5, 2014, had a schedule note saying, "Reminder: Elon Musk to island Dec. 6 (is this still happening?)"

Muskwrote on XSaturday that he "had very little correspondence with Epstein and declined repeated invitations to go to his island or fly on his 'Lolita Express,' but was well aware that some email correspondence with him could be misinterpreted and used by detractors to smear my name."

CBS News has reached out to Musk for comment.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick

Former Wall Street executive and now Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and his family spent time on Epstein's island, Little Saint James, in 2012, emails show.

Lutnick's wife, Allison, planned a visit with their four children and another family around the end of that year and emailed with Lesley Groff, Epstein's then assistant, to coordinate their travel.

Howard Lutnick was invited for lunch with Epstein on his island, and that appears to have taken place. On Dec. 24, 2012, a person whose name was redacted wrote to Lutnick on behalf of Epstein to tell him "it was nice seeing you."

But Lutnick claimed in aninterviewlast October with the New York Post that he and his wife had cut ties with Epstein in 2005, after taking a tour of his New York townhouse. They had moved in next door to Epstein.

Lutnick told the New York Post that Epstein had shown them his massage room and commented on the massages he received there. Lutnick said he and his wife quickly left, "and in the six to eight steps it takes to get from his house to my house, my wife and I decided that I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again."

A Commerce Department spokesperson, in a statement to CBS News, said that Lutnick "had limited interactions with Mr. Epstein in the presence of his wife and has never been accused of wrongdoing."

New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch

In a 2013 email exchange between New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch and Epstein, the two men discussed multiple women.

In one email, Tisch asked for details about a "Ukrainian Girl" who had lunch with him after meeting at Epstein's house. He called her a "very sweet girl."

Epstein replied that the woman had "a 10 ass" and is a "character," adding he would get "all info" on her.

Tisch responded that he was "curious to know about" the woman, and asked Epstein if she is a "pro or civilian?" prompting Epstein to reply that he doesn't "like records of these conversations."

Regarding a different woman, Tisch asked Epstein, "Is she fun?"

Epstein replied that the woman is "a civilian, but russian, and rarely tells the full truth, but fun."

In a separate email, after it appears Tisch met with a woman, Epstein told Tisch that a "report" was "just in" from their encounter, and he told the Giants owner that "you did very well… she is a little freaked by the age difference but go slow…"

In another email from the same year, Tisch appeared to be emailing with a woman that Epstein had introduced him to, writing to her, "Jeffrey Epstein is very excited about you and I meeting each other… I like that idea… do you?"

Epstein then appeared to give him tips about the woman's life, suggesting she was still in college and could not travel during the week to meet Tisch.

"Never heard back from her," Tisch wrote to Epstein in a reply. "Oh well…"

Other emails show Tisch inviting Epstein to a Giants football game and Epstein inviting Tisch to his private island.

Tisch said in a statement to CBS News: "We had a brief association where we exchanged emails about adult women, and in addition, we discussed movies, philanthropy, and investments. I did not take him up on any of his invitations and never went to his island. As we all know now, he was a terrible person and someone I deeply regret associating with."

CBS News has reached out to the NFL and the Giants for comment.

Two emails Epstein sent to himself on July 18, 2013, contain unverified allegations thatBill Gateshad extramarital "sex with Russian girls" that resulted in a sexually transmitted infection requiring antibiotics. In one email, Epstein claimed Gates also sought to "surreptitiously give" the antibiotics to his then wife Melinda Gates.

In another, which Epstein drafted as aresignation letterfrom the perspective of someone named "Boris," he said, "I have been asked and wrongly acquiesced into participating in things that have ranged from the morally inappropriate, to the ethically unsound and have been repeatedly asked to do thing (sic) that get near and potentially over the line into the illegal...From helping Bill to get drugs, in order to deal with consequences of sex with russian girls, to facilitating his illicit trusts, with married women, to being asked to provide adderall fro (sic) bridge touramnts (sic), as I am a medial (sic) doctor, but have no presriptions (sic) writing ability."

The emails appear to have been written by Epstein on behalf of an aggrieved employee of Bill Gates who was resigning. The Daily Mailand other outlets have suggested Epstein may have been drafting a resignation letter forBoris Nikolic, a physician and a former employee of Bill Gates.

A spokesperson for Bill Gates told CBS News: "These claims are absolutely absurd and completely false. The only thing these documents demonstrate is Epstein's frustration that he did not have an ongoing relationship with Gates and the lengths he would go to entrap and defame."

The Wall Street Journalreported in 2023 that Epstein tried to threaten Gates after discovering he had an affair with a Russian bridge player named Mila Antonova, whom Gates had met in 2010. Neither Gates nor Antonova have confirmed the affair.

President Trump

President Trump consistently has said he kicked Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club and ended their friendship two decades ago, and while there are hundreds of references to Mr. Trump in the trove of newly released documents, the president claimed they further exonerate him.

Among the documents is a September 2009deposition in whichEpstein's former house manager, Juan Alessi, said Mr. Trump "never" stayed over at Epstein's home in Palm Beach, and also never got a massage while there.

There is also amessagesent Sept. 28, 2012, asking: "what does JE think of going to Mar-a-Lago after xmas instead of his island?" "JE" apparently refers to Epstein; the names of the sender and the recipient are redacted. It's unclear whether there was any response.

The Justice Department said in apress releasethat some of the material in the Epstein-related documents contains untrue information about Mr. Trump.

"I didn't see it myself but I was told by some very important people that not only does it absolve me, it's the opposite of what people were hoping, you know, the radical left," the president said on Saturday as he flew to Florida.

Steve Bannon

Among the files released on Friday is nearlytwo hours of videofrom an interview Steve Bannon, Mr. Trump's chief White House strategist during his first administration, conducted with Epstein.

Earlier Epstein document releases showedBannon and Epsteinoften corresponded, and that Epstein sought to revive his shattered reputation through a documentary with Bannon.

The file and video do not make clear when the interview was recorded. In the interview, Bannon asked Epstein, "What are you, class three sexual predator?"

"Tier one," Epstein replied.

Bannon asked, "You're tier — what is — tier one's the highest and worst?"

Epstein responded that no, "I'm the lowest."

"You're the lowest. Okay, tier one, you're the lowest, but a criminal," said Bannon.

"Yes," Epstein replied.

Epstein also told Bannon, "I don't know why I'm attracted to somebody. I don't know people are attracted to each other."

Emails from November and December 2018 also indicate Steve Bannon and his son, Sean Bannon, received Hermes Apple watches, priced at $1,499 at the time, from Epstein. They were identical models — "44 mm, space gray, stainless steel case, space black," — the email said.

Lesley Groff, who was Epstein's assistant, wrote, "Jeffrey will give to Steve when he sees him next." In January 2019, there was another email from a redacted name sent to Epstein that read, "Steve has been given his Apple Watch!"

CBS News has reached out to Bannon by phone and email.

Brett Ratner

The files release includes photos showing filmmaker Brett Ratner with Epstein and two females.

The photosshow Ratner with his arms around a female in a white top. They are on a couch next to Epstein, who is shoulder-to-shoulder with another female.

CBS News has reached out to Ratner's production company, Ratpac Entertainment, for comment.

In 2017,multiple womenaccused Ratnerof sexual misconductand he was dropped from a number of film projects. He denied any wrongdoing.

Ratner recently directed "Melania,"a documentarythat offers an inside look at the life of first lady Melania Trump in the days after the president's 2024 election victory.

Dr. Mehmet Oz

A transaction report shows that in 2004, Jeffrey Epstein paid for the travel of Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor and talk show host who now heads the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the Department of Health and Human Services.

The report shows $1,592 was billed to Shoppers Travel, Inc.

Epstein was also invited to an event in 2014 in which Oz was a guest speaker, but Epstein wrote in an email that he was unavailable to attend.

Additionally, in 2016, Oz sent an email to Epstein, but the message is redacted.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where Oz has served as administrator since 2025, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kathryn Ruemmler

Kathryn Ruemmler, who was White House counsel under former President Obama from 2011 to 2014, said in a December 2015 email that she adores Epstein.

"I adore him. It's like having another older brother!" Ruemmler said to a redacted recipient, according to the emails released by the Justice Department. Ruemmler made the comment after Epstein offered to buy her a first-class ticket to Europe.

Ruemmler also served as associate White House counsel to former President Bill Clinton. She is now the chief legal officer and general counsel at Goldman Sachs.

In 2023, shetold the Wall Street Journal, "I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein."

Woody Allen

In a May 2015text message exchange, Epstein asks filmmaker Woody Allen if he wants to have a "day museum White House trip" the next week. That would have been when former President Barack Obama was in office.

Allen replied, "With my rap sheet I'll never get past security."

It's unclear if they were referring to visiting someone at the White House or simply a tourist trip. Another person appears to be included in the text exchange, but the name is redacted.

Allen has not been charged with any crimes, and he has denied accusations by Mia Farrow that he molested their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow.

Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos

In anOctober 2009 emailto Epstein from Peggy Siegal, a publicist and New York socialite, said she just left Ghislaine Maxwell's house, where an after-party for an unnamed film was being held.

"Bill Clinton and Jeff Bezos were there," she wrote.

Clinton's name and photos surfaced inprevious setsof documents related to Epstein.

A spokesperson for Clintonsaid in 2019, after Epstein was indicted on federal charges, that the former president took four trips on Epstein's plane in 2002 and 2003, traveling to Europe, Asia and Africa. Angel Ureña, the spokesperson, said the trips included stops in connection with the Clinton Foundation, and staff, foundation supporters, and Clinton's Secret Service detail were on every leg of every trip.

"President Clinton knows nothing about the terrible crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago or those with which he has been recently charged in New York," he said.

CBS News has also reached out to Bezos for comment.

Former Ambassador Peter Mandelson

The latest Epstein document release by the Justice Department has increased scrutiny of Britain'sformer Ambassador to the U.S., Peter Mandelson, with emails suggesting he may have shared sensitive U.K. government information with the late American financier and sex offender.

Emails published Friday by the Justice Department indicate Mandelson was in close contact with Epstein while serving as a member of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's cabinet, and that he may have shared confidential information about both the European Union and the United Kingdom's finances.

On Feb. 4, the London Metropolitan Police announced a formal investigation into a 72-year-old former government minister, "following the further release of millions of court documents in relation to Jeffrey Epstein."

Mandelson has not commented publicly on the documents suggesting he shared confidential U.K. government information with Epstein.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose office shared material on Mandelson with the police, told lawmakers in parliament on Feb. 4 that "Mandelson betrayed our country, our parliament, and my party."

It was announced in Britain's House of Lords the previous day that Mandelson had formally notified the body of his intention to resign as a lord. Unlike the U.S. Senate, people are appointed, not elected to the upper house of Britain's parliament, and they typically serve for life.
