The path toYellowstone's finale was a fraught one for fans. Despite early announcements that the Taylor Sheridan-created show would be ending with season five, the series' last batch of episodes was never fully billed as the end, giving some of the audience hope that there could be asurprise last-minute announcement for season six. Said announcement never materialized, but now, more than a year later, it sounds like fans may be getting at least part of their wish.
According toa new interviewwith Greg Yaitanes, who directed the third and fourth episodes of the upcoming Beth and Rip-centered spinoffDutton Ranch, the new series is picking up whereYellowstoneleft off—not just narratively, but stylistically as well. "It's much more of a drama and a soap," he said, comparing the series toMarshals, theLuke Grimes-starringYellowstonespinofffor which he also directed. "It has the best parts of what I loved aboutYellowstone."

He added, "Dutton Ranchhas more continuity of crew from the original series… A lot of the people involved withDutton Ranchreally felt like they were makingYellowstoneSeason 6.Marshalsis much more genre and guns-forward and those kinds of cool things."
While that might, to some, sound like an endorsement of one over the other—not to worryMarshalslovers, the show hasalready been picked up for a second season—Yaitanes made clear his affection for both series and their connection to their shared history. "How we're dealing with the human drama and the vulnerability isYellowstonein both shows. The themes that everybody's working with, like how everybody deals with their inner torment and how they exorcise it is different for Beth than it is for Kayce. They're equally compelling offshoots of the original."
