Bad Bunny reveals true meaning of '64' on his Super Bowl jersey

Bad Bunnynot only spotlightedPuerto Rico on one of the world's largest stages, he also brought a piece of family with him to theSuper Bowl.

As soon as he was seen walking out on to the Levi's Stadium turf to perform during theSuper Bowl 60 halftime show, fans quickly began speculating aboutthe significance of the number 64featured on the front and back of his stylish, off-white "Ocasio" football jersey, which he elegantly draped over a matching shirt, tie and chinos combo.

Some theorized it was a nod to his mother's birth year, and others ventured that it was a tribute to his 2020 album "El Último Tour del Mundo," which became the firstSpanish-language projectin 64 years to top the all-genre Billboard 200 chart. Good guesses, but not quite right.

In a statement to USA TODAY from Bad Bunny's representatives on Monday, Feb. 9, the 31-year-old Puerto Rican artist explained it was a nod to his uncle, Cutito.

"1964 is the year my uncle Cutito was born, my mother's brother," the statement read in Spanish. "The little I know about the NFL is thanks to him."

"My uncle passed away two years ago, shortly after the 49ers lost to Kansas City in the 2024 Super Bowl," Bad Bunny's statement continued. "I always dreamed of taking my uncle to a Super Bowl, and I couldn't."

"1964 es la fecha en que nació mi tío Cutito, hermano de mi mamá. Lo poco que conozco de la NFL es gracias a él. Se fue a los 17 años a Estados Unidos a trabajar y nunca volvió a vivir en Puerto Rico, aunque siempre nos visitaba a finales de enero o principios de febrero y se quedaba en casa.

Bad Bunny's statement in English:

"1964 is the year my uncle Cutito was born, my mother's brother. The little I know about the NFL is thanks to him. He left for the United States at 17 to work and never returned to Puerto Rico, although he always visited us in late January or early February and stayed at our house. That was right in the middle of the NFL playoffs, so I always watched the games with him.

"He was a huge fan of the San Francisco 49ers, the team whose home stadium is where this Super Bowl 60 took place, where I performed. My uncle passed away two years ago, shortly after the 49ers lost to Kansas City in the 2024 Super Bowl. I always dreamed of taking my uncle to a Super Bowl, and I couldn't.

Bad Bunny dedicated the #64 on his jersey to his late uncle who passed away two years ago.

"He passed away unexpectedly, without warning. So for my Super Bowl halftime show, I decided to have him with me on my jersey: OCASIO, his last name, the same as my mother's, and his birth year, '64. I dedicated my performance to him before it began. I'm sure he saw it; he was there in spirit, and he felt proud of his nephew. Now all that's left is the day the 49ers win another Super Bowl."
