No. 18 Kentucky was already one of the most disappointing teams in the country. Then it lost by 35 points in front of a mostly UK partisan crowd.

The dam broke on Friday for the Wildcats, who entered a game against No. 11 Gonzaga with a 5-3 record and exited with a 5-4 record. The final score: 94-59.

The game started badly and ended badly for Kentucky. Gonzaga began the game with a 19-2 run and was up 43-20 at halftime. As the Wildcats players began the trek to the locker room, the fans at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville showered them with boos.

With UK's campus much closer than Gonzaga's, the crowd was almost entirely Wildcats fans. And they made their voices heard.

The second half was no better. Overall, Kentucky was 16-of-60 from the field (27%) and got outrebounded 43-31. Gonzaga, meanwhile, shot 36-of-63 (57%) and was 9-of-18 from 3-point range. Graham Ike led all players with 28 points and 10 rebounds in 30 minutes.

After the game, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope said his team deserved the boos, with himself the most deserving:

"We've diminished into a bad spot right now and we have to dig ourselves out of it. It's going to be an internal group thing and we feel the responsibility we have to this university and this fan base. All the boos we heard tonight were incredibly well-deserved, mostly from me. We have to fix it."

Kentucky began the season ranked No. 9 in the country after going 24-12 in Pope's first season in charge. To bolster last year's group, the Wildcats spent big on a transfer class that included Arizona State's Jayden Quaintance, Pitt's Jaland Lowe, Florida's Denzel Aberdeen and Alabama's Mouhamed Dioubate. The reported price tag for the roster: $22 million.

It seemed like a formidable group if Pope could get all the new talent on the same page, but the team has now lost all four of its games against ranked opponents. The Louisville loss was embarrassing. The Michigan State game was out of reach the entire second half. The UNC loss was a gut punch.

And now, a 35-point loss. Don't expect them to ranked come Monday.

To be fair, health has not been on Kentucky's side so far. Quaintance, a lottery pick-level talent, is still recovering from a torn ACL and Dioubate missed his fourth straight game due to a sprained ankle. Lowe returned from a shoulder injury Friday and posted zero points on 0-of-5 shooting from the bench.

Still, Kentucky teams, even short-handed ones, aren't supposed to lose by 30-plus. The program is a blue blood, with immense resources and expectations to match. Pope seems well aware of that, and his program will get two more shots against ranked opponents this month — home against No. 22 Indiana and a matchup against No. 23 St. John's in Atlanta — before conference play starts in the new year.

Lane Kiffin says he won't travel to Atlanta for ESPN's 'College GameDay' after LSU signs No. 1 recruit

Lane Kiffin's trip to Atlanta for ESPN's "College GameDay" is off. According to Kiffin, anyway.

The new LSU coach posted to social media Friday evening that his jaunt to Georgia would not happen after LSU got the signature of No. 1 overall recruit Lamar Brown. The Louisiana native and five-star player officially signed with LSU on Friday, the last day of the early signing period for high school players.

Kiffin's appearance on "GameDay" Saturday morning could still happen via remote interview.

Welp had to stay in BR and still finishing some things out with players and a coach!! 🐯🐯Won't make it to Atlanta for@CollegeGameDay#WhatAGreatFridayhttps://t.co/I5H449u1gw

— Lane Kiffin (@Lane_Kiffin)December 6, 2025

Brown has been a longtime LSU commit and Kiffin took a picture with him shortly after arriving in Baton Rouge from Ole Miss on Sunday. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound Louisiana native is officially listed as an athlete as he plays both offensive and defensive line, though he sees himself playing on the offensive line in college, according to his Rivals profile.

LSU has also been reportedly pursuing Syracuse assistant Elijah Robinson to be its defensive line coach. Robinson was Syracuse's defensive coordinator in 2025 but recently was demoted after a rough season for the Orange.

As the early signing period concludes, LSU has the No. 11 class in the country. The Tigers signed five-star defensive lineman Richard Anderson along with Brown and added eight four-star recruits so far.

Kiffin's scheduled appearance on "GameDay" would be his second public appearance since taking the LSU job along with his introductory news conference. "GameDay" had been sympathetic to Kiffin's situation in recent weeks as former Alabama coach Nick Saban — who Kiffin worked for with the Crimson Tide — shares an agent with Kiffin.

Two weeks ago,Saban said on the pregame showthat Kiffin's decision was not fair to Ole Miss' players and that college football needed people to step up and change the rules to prevent Kiffin's departure from happening when it did.

Kiffin, meanwhile, said he had been leaning on advice from Saban and former USC and current Las Vegas Raiders coach Pete Carroll as he made his decision to leave Ole Miss. Kiffin has also made claims in the aftermath of taking the LSU job that have beenrefuted by Ole Miss playersandRebels athletic director Keith Carter.

World Cup draw winners and losers: USMNT gets a boost, Spain celebrates while France sweats in Group of Death

The2026 FIFA World Cup draw— the biggest (and longest?) in tournament history — was held Friday at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and let's just say thata lothappened, from the heads of state picking the already decided balls to Rio Ferdinand attempting his best acting skills to Lauryn Hill singing "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in front of a lot of confused, suited members of FIFA.

But in terms of the actual draw, there are plenty of narratives to discuss, as it gave us some very tasty matches and scintillating group action. Due to the fact that we have 48 national teams divided into 12 groups of four, the possibilities for chaos are endless, so without further ado, here are the winners and losers from Friday's FIFA World Cup draw.

WINNERS

USMNT

Mauricio Pochettino likely left the Kennedy Center feeling extremely happy, asthe U.S. men's national team will face Paraguay, Australia and the winner of Türkiye, Romania, Slovakia and Kosovo— all winnable matches. It was only last month that the U.S. came out victorious against Paraguay with a 2-1 result, and a month before that, it was the same result against Australia. Obviously, the competitive nature of the World Cup will give us a different environment, but I think it will be the same outcome.

As for the other fixture? I see Türkiye and Real Madrid's Arda Güler eventually punching their ticket to become the remaining opponent, but again, the Americans have enough to see it through.

Feliz Navidad, Poche. This is a great group for your side.

Spain

Honestly, if the European champions play the way they're supposed to, this group should be a piece of cake for Lamine Yamal and Co., who played scintillating football throughout the majority of the World Cup qualifiers.

La Roja'sfirst match is against Saudi Arabia, the same team that shocked Argentina and Lionel Messi back in Qatar 2022, but I don't see Luis de la Fuente's side committing the same mistakes. After that, it's a fixture against the Cinderella story of Cape Verde, then ending with Uruguay, who have not been as strong in recent months under Marcelo Bielsa. (In fact, Bielsa wasn't even at the draw, and there is a lot of talk about major changes in the next few months.)

But as far as Spain is concerned, it should win this group with relative ease.

England

It's an incredibly English mentality to suggest that theirs is a challenging group (Croatia, Ghana and Panamá) and Thomas Tuchel's side should be nervous and careful. But this is the way all conversations start when British media talk about the Three Lions. However, it's time for some optimism and to expect success from this tremendously talented team's potential.

Croatia is always a tough cookie to crack, but it's also an aging one, as the likes of 40-year-old Luka Modrić and 36-year-old Ivan Perišić cannot control the game like they used to. It will be the hardest match of the group, but because it's the first one, I see England coming out strong to prove a point in this tournament. The venue is likely a bigger problem because if it's in the Dallas area, they're going to need to be wary of the temperatures, as Tuchel knows.

Meanwhile, Ghana has players of Premier League experience, but defensively, it's not enough to dominate against this deeply talented roster, while Panamá (second appearance at the World Cup after 2018), which is also dealing with an over-reliance on veterans, won't be a problem.

There's a difference between arrogance and confidence, and Tuchel's England needs a dose of both to realize that this group is absolutely there to be taken.

LOSERS

France

Group I is not an easy one forLes Bleus.

First, it's an opening game against Erling Haaland's Norway, which won every qualifier on their way to the World Cup. After that, it's the winner of Bolivia, Iraq or Suriname, ending with a game against Senegal, a country so deeply connected to the French, who also did well in qualifiers.

From a footballing perspective, it was in 2002 that Senegal beat France 1-0 in the opener, and that meant the defending World Cup champions at the time did not get out of the group. I am not saying that's happening next summer, but this very talented French team — the last under Didier Deschamps — is also not experienced in the competition as much as it used to be, as many veterans have retired from the international game.

We'll have to see if the French can win the group and find an easier path in the knockout stages. Because if it doesn't, things get complicated.

This is the Group of Death, alongside …

Group E (though the fans win)

This is a very difficult group to predict.

There is obvious historical bias with Germany, the four-time World Cup champion, and so many think that Julian Nagelsmann's side will succeed with ease here, but his project is still to be determined. The qualifying campaign did not start well, so there are still questions about the consistency, which was once a trademark characteristic forDie Mannschaft.

Then you have a very resilient, strong and determined Ecuador, which ended second in CONMEBOL qualifiers, its best-ever finish since the region's campaign moved to a single table.

The Ivory Coast is tough, too, returning for the first time since 2014, ended undefeated in qualifiers without conceding a goal. There's so much talent there who are also familiar with the German game.

Finally, Curaçao. Yes, the Caribbean island andsmallest nation in World Cup historyis undoubtedly a Cinderella story, but it's also a very good project with a great roster that could cause problems for anyone, thanks to its expanded diaspora. Defensively resilient, it's managed by the legendary Dick Advocaat, who has managed seven nations including his Netherlands, whom he took to the quarterfinal stage in 1994 in the USA. At 78, he will become the oldest manager to lead a team in the World Cup, and I am sure both him and his team will look to ruffle a few feathers.

Watch out for this group. It's going to be interesting to see who comes out of it.

OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - OCTOBER 11: Jimmy Rogers, Head Coach of the Washington State Cougars is seen against the Mississippi Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on October 11, 2025 in Oxford, Mississippi. (Photo by Randy J. Williams/Getty Images)

Iowa State didn't wait around to find Matt Campbell's replacement.

Just minutesafter Yahoo Sports reported Campbell had finalized a dealwith Penn State to be the Nittany Lions' next coach, the Cyclones announced they were hiring Washington State coach Jimmy Rogers.

His hire was officially announced by the school before Penn State announced Campbell's hire. It's the second time this coaching cycle that has happened. On Sunday, Ole Miss announced defensive coordinator Pete Golding was Lane Kiffin's replacement before Kiffin was officially revealed as LSU's coach.

"Jimmy Rogers is a rising star in college athletics who has very strong ties to the Midwest both as a player and as a coach," Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement. "He has been on my short-list ever since the first time I met him. He immediately impressed me with his interest in Iowa State University and told me during our first visit several years ago that he wanted to be the next head coach at Iowa State.

"Since our initial meeting, I have stayed in close contact with him and have been very impressed with his work ethic and understanding of what it takes to be successful at Iowa State," he added. "He is a proven winner who has demonstrated throughout his career that he will fit our culture."

Rogers led Washington State to a 6-6 record in his first season with the Cougars in 2025.

While that record may not seem exceptional, both Washington State and Oregon State have been at a significant disadvantage since the Pac-12 dissolved at the end of the 2023 season. The two schools were left behind as every other team in the league bolted for either the Big Ten, Big 12 or found a home in the ACC.

Without a real conference for the last two seasons, the two schools have barnstormed all over the country while playing each other twice this season.

Rogers, 38, was the head coach at South Dakota State for two seasons before taking the Washington State job. The Jackrabbits went 15-0 and won the FCS title in 2023 before going 12-3 and losing in the semifinals in 2024.

A former South Dakota State linebacker, Rogers was a defensive assistant with the school for a decade before he became the team's head coach. He was associate head coach and defensive coordinator before he was promoted to head coach.

Rogers has incredible familiarity with the upper midwest as South Dakota State is less than five hours from Ames, Iowa, by car. The Cyclones have 50 players from the state of Iowa on their 2025 roster.

Rogers also takes over for the most successful coach in Iowa State history. Campbell's teams won 72 games in his decade in charge. No other Iowa State coach has more than 56 wins. Iowa State had eight winning seasons in Campbell's tenure and won 11 games in 2024. Iowa State went 11-3 a season ago and lost to Arizona State in the Big 12 championship game.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers says he anticipates Giannis Antetokounmpo missing about 4 weeks

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers says he anticipates Giannis Antetokounmpo missing about a month as the two-time MVP recovers from astrained right calf.

Initial reports indicated Antetokounmpo would be out two to four weeks. Rivers suggested Friday that it would likely be on the higher end of that timeline.

"Let's hope he's back sooner, but I'm going to guess it's more in the four-week range," Rivers said before the Bucks' game with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rivers emphasized the importance of caution with calf issues to avoid the risk of a player getting hurt more severely.

"And so that may take longer than we want," Rivers said. "That even may make Giannis frustrated over it. But we've just got to try to get that right."

Antetokounmpo injured his calf in the opening minutes of a113-109 victoryover the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

He had just assisted on AJ Green's layup less than three minutes into the game when he headed back up the court and slipped in the painted area. Antetokounmpo went down, clutched his right leg and eventually was helped up before walking to the locker room.

Rivers said after that game that he believed Antetokounmpo's injury may have stemmed from contact he made with a Detroit player while driving along the baseline just before passing to Green.

Antetokounmpo entered Friday ranked seventh in the NBA in scoring (28.9), ninth in rebounding (10.1) and 19th in assists (6.1).

His injury looked similar to a calf strain that ended Antetokounmpo's 2023-24 season prematurely. Antetokounmpo was heading up the court during an April 9 victory over the Boston Celtics that season when he grabbed his left calf and took a seat on the floor before being helped off the court.

Antetokounmpo went on to miss the Bucks' final three regular-season games as well as their entire six-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in the opening round of the playoffs that season.

This latest calf injury comes after Antetokounmpo missed four games last month with a left adductor strain. The Bucks lost all four of those games.

Rivers noted that Milwaukee guard Kevin Porter Jr. also didn't play in any of those games while recovering from a knee injury. Porter returned Nov. 29 and is averaging 19.8 points and 5 assists this season.

"Now we have 'Scoot' (Porter) andRyan (Rollins)together," Rivers said. "It's a different team than it was even three weeks ago or four weeks ago."

The Bucks entered Friday having gone 1-5 in games Antetokounmpo has missed this season. The only win came in their first game without Antetokounmpo, a120-110 home victoryover the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 30.

But they did rally from an 18-point deficit Wednesday against the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons with Antetokounmpo only playing the first three minutes.

This injury occurred the same day ESPN reported that Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, had started speaking with the Bucks about the nine-time all-NBA forward's future and whether he's best suited to stay in Milwaukee or play elsewhere.Rivers disputedthe report and said that "Giannis has never asked to be traded – ever. I can't make that more clear."

MARTINSVILLE, VIRGINIA - OCTOBER 30: Michael Annett, driver of the #1 PFJ Veterans Salute Chevrolet, walks onstage during pre-race ceremonies prior to the NASCAR Xfinity Series Dead on Tools 250 at Martinsville Speedway on October 30, 2021 in Martinsville, Virginia. Former NASCAR driver Michael Annett has died. He was 39.

JR Motorsports announced Annett's death in a social media post Friday evening. Annett drove for the team in the Xfinity Series for five seasons from 2017-21.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Annett family with the passing of our friend Michael Annett. Michael was a key member of JRM from 2017 until he retired in 2021 and was an important part in turning us into the four-car organization we remain today.https://t.co/oZdMymjBz6pic.twitter.com/PUsCZHkXEg

— JR Motorsports (@JRMotorsports)December 6, 2025

Annett made over 100 starts in NASCAR's Cup Series and over 300 starts in NASCAR's second-tier Xfinity Series. Annett's lone Xfinity Series win came in 2019, when he won the season-opening race at Daytona. He went on to have five more top-five finishes and finished ninth in the points standings that season.

His best season in the Xfinity Series came in 2012 when he drove for Richard Petty Motorsports. Annett had six top-five finishes and 17 top-10 finishes and finished fifth in the points standings.

At JR Motorsports, he never finished outside the top 15 in the points standings.

Annett competed in 106 Cup Series races over the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons. He drove for underfunded teams Tommy Baldwin Racing and HScott Racing during his time at NASCAR's top level and had just six top-20 finishes in his Cup Series career. His best finish came in 2015 when he was 13th at the Daytona 500.

Annett retired after the 2021 season after he dealt with a stress fracture in his right leg for much of the season. He missed seven races that year. He also missed races during the 2013 season after he suffered a fractured and dislocated sternum in a crash at Daytona when his car slammed head-on into the wall.

Michael Jordan testifies in NASCAR lawsuit, calling the racing body an unfair monopoly

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR's management structure is unfair to its teams and drivers, with money and power in the hands of people who don't risk life and limb on the oval, basketball legend Michael Jordan told a court on Friday.

Testimony from Jordan and the daughter-in-law ofPro Football Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbshighlighted courtroom action Friday, in a federalantitrust case, accusingNASCAR of operating as monopolistic bullies.

"Someone had to step forward to challenge NASCAR," said Jordan, a co-owner of 23XI Racing.

Jordan explained that NASCAR needs to be run more like the NBA, with a mutually beneficial partnership between the league and its teams.

"If you share responsibility, the healthiness of the sport can grow," he said. "It needed to be looked at from a whole different perspective. That's why we're here."

Drivers are risking their lives to race with no insurance or union protections, according tothe former North Carolina Tar Heel, whowon six NBA championshipswith the Chicago Bulls.

"I never saw(NASCAR CEO) Jim Francedrive a car and risk his life," Jordan said.

Even though 13 of 15 NASCAR Cup Series teams have signed the 2025-2031 charter agreement extension, those organizations had no real choice, according to Heather Gibbs, chief operating officer of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR).

Before Jordan took the stand, Gibbs told the court that signing was the only option in what amounted to a "take-it-or-leave-it" situation.

"As if you have a gun to your head,"Gibbs said of her team's decision to sign.

Even though JGR is on one of the sport's most storied organizations, Gibbs said profits have been hit-and-miss under the current NASCAR system.

"Some years, not every year," she told a NASCAR attorney asking if JGR is a money maker.

Three ofNASCAR's top five drivers, No. 2 andthree-time Daytona 500 winnerDenny Hamlin, No. 3 Chase Briscoe and No. 5 Christopher Bell, race out of the JGR stable.

Despite the massive stakes on the table and the occasional tough words, both sides were remarkably cordial to one another in court on Friday.

When a NASCAR attorney finished his cross-examination of Jordan, he told the all-time basketball great: "My 9-year-old thinks I'm pretty cool today."

Jorden joked that the NASCAR attorney should've been laced up in the former player's famed hight tops in court.

"You're not wearing your Jordans today," Jordan quipped.

Grading the hire: Matt Campbell finally leaves Iowa State, will fit Penn State's brand

Our long, national nightmare is over.Penn State footballhas found its head coach.

TheNittany Lionsare finalizing an agreementwith Iowa State's Matt Campbellto replace James Franklin, per a report by ESPN.

Campbell, 46, has coached the Cyclones for 10 seasons and became the winningest coach in school history with a 72-55 record, including 8-4 in 2025.

HAYES:Penn State must hire Matt Campbell to avoid blowing CFB coaching carousel

Here's how we grade the hire:

Grade: B+

Penn State took a circuitous route to making a solid hire, if not a home run.

Even after whiffing on Brigham Young's Kalani Sitake, athletic director Pat Kraftmanaged to land a proven coach, one who was named the Big 12 coach of the year three times.

Campbell's name has appeared on candidate lists for prime jobs for many years, but he repeatedly remained loyal toIowa State. Now, finally, he saw an opportunity good enough to make a move. An Ohio native, the 46-year-old Campbell has spent his entire career in the Midwest. He'll fit Penn State's brand.

Campbell departs Iowa State as the best coach in program history, producing a winning record eight times in 10 seasons there. He's headed to a program with superior resources — and more demanding expectations than Campbell has ever encountered in his career.

Campbell's resume is not superior to that of the coach Penn State fired, but it always seemed unlikely the Nittany Lions would hire a more accomplished coach than James Franklin.

Campbell's known more for being a player developer than an ace recruiter. He'll need to prove he can win blue-chip recruiting battles to get Penn State onto Ohio State's level, or even to keep it at the level Franklin had Penn State operating at in most seasons before this one.

At Iowa State, Campbell could be counted on to assemble one of the Big 12's stingiest defenses, year after year. That'll translate well at Penn State. Can Campbell develop quarterbacks that'll allow Penn State to stand toe-to-toe with the best Big Ten programs?

As good as Campbell's Cyclones defenses usually were, his offenses were more middle of the pack or even toward the bottom of the Big 12. Maybe, that'll elevate with higher-caliber athletes at Penn State. Campbell only ever had one Iowa State quarterback selected in the NFL Draft. That was Brock Purdy, a four-year starter selected in the seventh round in 2022.

An 8-4 season at Iowa State would go down in the good-season column. At Penn State, that won't cut it anymore. Welcome to the big leagues.

Campbell is a steady hand who now must show he's ready to perform to the level Penn State demands.

Blake Griffin takes Chris Paul's side after ugly Clippers divorce, 'disappointed' in former team

One of the best players in Los Angeles Clippers history isn't thrilled with how the franchise has treated his former teammate, Chris Paul.

Three days afterthe Clippers unceremoniously released the future Hall of Famer in the middle of a road trip, former All-Star Blake Griffin provided some perspective on the divorce during an appearance onPrime Video's NBA pregame show. Consider him fully on Paul's side.

Griffin praised Paul's leadership during their time together in L.A. while criticizing the Clippers' lack of communication and consideration for Paul as he navigates what is supposed to be his final season in the NBA.

"I'm disappointed for Chris Paul."An open and honest@blakegriffin23on his former teammate Chris Paul parting ways with the Clippers.#NBAonPrimepic.twitter.com/Yk9dQ8firW

— NBA on Prime (@NBAonPrime)December 5, 2025

Griffin's comments:

"I'm just disappointed, to be honest. I can't really think of another word. Obviously shocked at first, but disappointed. I'm disappointed for Chris Paul, but I'm disappointed in the Clippers organization.

"Chris Paul is a guy who came to the Clippers when DeAndre [Jordan] and I were first- and second-year guys. He brought a winning culture. He taught us how to operate in the NBA and how to take every game seriously, how to take your body seriously, that there was no detail that was too small ... Chris Paul, for 20 years, has been the same player. He's been about winning.

"Re-signing with the Clippers, this was supposed to be his moment, his coming back to L.A. 'I'm giving it one last go.' And for him to not get to walk out on his own terms, from the franchise — that he chose to go to — to end his career, is extremely disappointing.

"But I think the biggest reason I'm disappointed is what Chris said. No communication with Ty Lue. And, even more than that, no communication — I talked to CP Wednesday, I talked to him yesterday, I talked to him today — no communication with Steve Ballmer. And that's the disappointing thing for me.

Since Paul's release, there have been reports that the 40-year-old had clashed with members of Clippers leadership, to the point that he allegedly hadn't spoken to head coach Tyronn Lue in weeks. Prime Video's Chris Haynes reported Friday the Clippers front office received intel that Paul was privately criticizing players, coaches and executives in the organization, which led to a meeting between Paul and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank.

Paul reportedly denied the allegations, but later apologized to his teammates "if his words or actions were misconstrued." He also reportedly asked for a meeting with Lue, but the coach declined.

As all of this was happening, the Clippers were off to an awful start, holding a 5-16 record at the time of Paul's release. Paul was averaging career lows across the board, including 2.9 points per game, while coming exclusively off the bench.

Paulreportedlygave the following comment to Haynes:

"I'm just staying ready. I'm hooping right now. I don't [know] what's next. I'm still scarred by it all. Still processing everything. But I'm staying ready."

It's unclear where Paul will land in free agency, but it's been made clear he doesn't want to retire until the end of the season. Even if he's no longer as productive as he once was, there figures to be a decent market for a player with his experience and leadership, especially given the number of connections he still has around the league.

As for the Clippers, they've received more than their usual amount of taunts, but also broke a five-game losing streak on Wednesday with a lopsided win over the Atlanta Hawks.

LeBron James, Luka Dončić out for Lakers' matchup with Celtics on Friday

The Los Angeles Lakers announced LeBron James is out for Friday night's game against the Boston Celtics. Luka Dončić and Marcus Smart were also ruled out.

James' injury designation is right sciatica and left arthritis, while Smart is dealing with a left lumbar muscle strain. Dončić has been away from the team for the birth of his second child in Slovenia.

James is coming off a notable performance Thursday night, when hisincredible 10-point streak — which has stood since 2007 — ended in thrilling fashion. With eight points on the stat sheet, James had the ball in the waning seconds of a tie game against the Raptors, but opted to pass to Rui Hachimura, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer.

James has played in just six of the Lakers' 21 games this season because of sciatica, and his 14.0 average points per game are easily the fewest of his career. His next-lowest total was in his rookie year in 2003-04, when he averaged 20.9 points in 79 games.

Still, the Lakers (16-5) are good for second in the Western Conference behind theone-loss Oklahoma City Thunder.

Detroit earned a desperately needed44-30 winover the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, going 2-1 in a three-game stretch of home games over 12 days.

"We handled our business," Lions coach Dan Campbell said. "Now, we get a little breather. We get a couple of days here to catch our breath and then we get ready for the Rams."

The Lions (8-5) would not be in the playoffs if they started next week, but the two-time defending NFC North champions have a chance to play their way in.

It won't be easy, especially after Pro Bowl safetyBrian Branchtore his left Achilles tendon against Dallas.

Detroit'splayoff probabilityis 54%, according to the NFL, with four games left in the regular season.

The banged-up Lions will have the weekend off before reporting to the team's training facility on Monday to begin preparing to face former Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on the road Dec. 14.

Detroit plays the Pittsburgh Steelers in its home finale on Dec. 21 before visiting Minnesota on Christmas Day and closing the regular season at Chicago — potentially with a lot at stake.

"We want to kind of be on this up ramp by the time we hit the playoffs, where we're this dangerous team who can kind of go toe to toe with anybody," Lions quarterback Jared Goff said. "That's what you want and we're right there."

What's working

Jahmyr Gibbs had 120 yards of offense and three scores in his latest sensational performance. He joined Hall of Famers Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson and Earl Campbell as the four players in NFL history with 4,500 yards from scrimmage and 45 touchdowns during the first three seasons of a career.

What needs help

Detroit didn't adequately replace veteran guardKevin Zeitlerwhen he left in free agency to sign with Tennessee and that has become a glaring problem.

Christian Mahogany had the first opportunity to fill the role before breaking his leg last month. Against Dallas, the Lions rotated 27-year-old Trystan Colon and fifth-round pick Miles Frazier into the game and they had mixed results.

"There were some mistakes certainly that want to be cleaned up, but for the most part did a good job," Campbell said.

Jameson Williams is coming off the most productive games of his career, matching a career high with seven catches for 96 yards against the Cowboys a week after setting career highs with seven receptions and 144 yards along with a touchdown in a loss to Green Bay.

Injuries in the secondary are piling up. Branch tore his left Achilles tendon, according to a person familiar with the situation. Tests revealed the significant injury on Friday, the person told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the results were not announced.

Free safety Thomas Harper, filling in for injured All-Pro Kerby Joseph, suffered a concussion in the first quarter against the Cowboys. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was put on injured reserve earlier this week.

Branch's injury is a big blow for a team that counts on the hard-hitting defensive back with coverage skills. Receiver and punt returner Kalif Raymond has missed two straight games. Brock Wright, filling in for injured tight end Sam LaPorta, was put on injured reserve on Thursday.

58 — The Lions will play their 58th game without losing back-to-back regular-season games at Los Angeles, the league's longest run since San Francisco's 60-game run without dropping consecutive games from 1995 to 1999, according to Sportradar. The Rams have the second-longest active streak, going 24 games without losing two in a row in the regular season.

Rest from a grueling, three-game stretch and recover from injuries to get healthy for the final part of the season.

No. 1 WR Chris Henry Jr. says he will sign with Ohio State

Chris Henry Jr., the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting class, said Friday he remains committed to Ohio State and will sign his national letter of intent with the Buckeyes.

Henry had been pledged to the Buckeyes since July 28, 2023, but Oregon and Southern California made strong last-minute pushes, with Texas and LSU also in the mix. The departure of Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, hired as the head coach at South Florida, compounded the uncertainty as the early signing period opened on Wednesday.

On Friday, he said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on ESPN that Ohio State is his choice because he knew it was the right fit.

"It was never really about the money. I was getting tons of offers (from) other places ... but ultimately for me, it was just a place I feel comfortable being developed and ultimately reaching my goal, which is to be a first-round draft pick," he said.

His father, the late Chris Henry, was a third-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals out of West Virginia in 2005.

Ohio State currently has the No. 6 class in the nation, before the signing of the younger Henry, according to the 247Sports composite. It also ranks the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Henry as the No. 10 overall player in the nation.

He will enter Ohio State from powerhouse Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif.

2026 NFL QB reboots: Cardinals' Kyler Murray, 49ers' Mac Jones and 4 other names to watch

"There's always going to be those highs. What we've got to do is hopefully eliminate those lows."

That was the response in late July, whenI asked Arizona Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort for his assessment of Kyler Murrayand the step that needed to be taken by the quarterback in 2025. As expectations went, it was a short and succinct checklist: Keep Murray healthy and available; remove the lowest of lows in his performance cycles.

Just over five weeks into the season? Murray was coming off three consecutive losses that showcased some of the frustrating portions of his career, and he was suddenly headed to injured reserve with a foot injury. What we didn't know then iswhat we found out on Friday: Murray's season was over— and likely with it, his stint as a Cardinals quarterback.

That's how Friday's news should be absorbed, with Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon announcing that further evaluation of Murray's foot injury isn't showing the advancement that would get him back onto the football field. In light of that information, he's being shut down.

"It's not progressing where it's gonna make sense that he can go [play]," Gannon said Friday, ahead of his team's home game against the Los Angeles Rams. "So he's gonna be done for the year."

Asked if Murray was going to be a Cardinals quarterback in 2026, Gannon declined to answer, stating "I'm worried about the Rams right now."

And just like that, Murray became arguably the No. 1 "reboot" quarterback target of the coming offseason — with any career turnaround now focusing on a new franchise.

Murray hasn't spoken to reporters since after Arizona's Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans, when he sustained the foot injury that landed him on injured reserve. However, he may havealluded to the his end of his time with the Cardinals Thursday night on his TikTok account, when he posted a short video of himself walking with teammates Marvin Harrison Jr., Michael Wilson and James Conner. The video was overlaid with the text "weird year" and posted with a caption reading "Never again". The caption portion was later deleted.

Friday's announcement only fuels divorce speculation that has swirled around Murray and the Cardinals since he was placed on injured reserve. Given that 2025 was seen as yet another year where Arizona was looking for Murray to turn a corner, it's a failure that weighs heavily on both Gannon and Ossenfort as the tandem complete their third season trying to turn the franchise around.

When I visited with the Cardinals in training camp, both  head coach and general manager expressed optimism, along with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, that Murray was going to make the advancement Arizona needed to fuel an offensive roster that featured little change from 2024 to 2025. With that hope failing to materialize, and with Harrison Jr. seeming stuck in a middle gear with the current offense, it's suggestive that there will be some inspired change from both the coaching staff and front office. However, that change would come at a steep cost, with Murray's contract a burdensome issue moving forward.

Due to the structure of Murray's deal, the Cardinals would take on a $57.75 million dead cap charge if they were to release him prior to June 1. If they designate him as a post June 1 release, that can be split into a $50.5 million charge in 2026 and a $7.2 million charge in 2027. The ideal move would be for the Cardinals to find a team to trade for Murray, which would yield a much more comfortable dead cap charge of $17.9 million, but also an overall cap savings of $35.3 million. For the latter to happen, the Cardinals would likely have to trade Murray away for very little in return and hope that an acquiring team would be willing to commit to the $36.8 million that's already fully guaranteed on his 2026 salary.

It's unlikely, given Murray's struggles and injuries, that a team would be willing to give up anything of substance in trade while also eating Murray's guaranteed money in 2026. However, if the Cardinals were willing to eat some of that guaranteed money in 2026, they could find a limited market for him before a mid-March deadline when his $19.5 million base salary in 2027 becomes fully guaranteed (if he's still on the Cardinals roster after the fifth day of the new league year in March).

Kyler Murray might have played his last snap for the Arizona Cardinals. (Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images)

In simplistic terms? If the Cardinals are moving on from Murray, they will need to be very motivated sellers and find a trade partner in place prior to March 15. That also means team owner Michael Bidwill needs to have all of his business with the current staff finalized as quickly as possible following the end of the season. Will Gannon and Ossenfort be afforded another season to get the franchise onto a playoff track? Given the competitive nature of the Cardinals despite a massive spate of injuries , there is merit to the tandem returning. If Bidwill feels otherwise, he'll need to have an either a new head coach or GM — or both — in place quickly to make a move with Murray.

For now, the appetite for Murray appears to be mixed. Multiple personnel executives placed a low value on Murray as a trade asset, but their overall assessment was dependent on the amount of money the Cardinals would be willing to eat on his contract and what his health status is come January. Murray doesn't turn 29 until August, but the perceived red flags about his work ethic, leadership and consistency are very real. That said, several executives noted that Murray's athletic profile and overall experience as a starter is still far superior to any other veteran options that are expected to be on the trade market or free agency this offseason.

"He still has the elite athletic profile," an AFC general manager told Yahoo Sports this week. "When you start comparing him to some of the other guys that might be available, [Murray's] good is still on a totally different level."

For that reason, the ballpark on Murray value is hard to pin down. The aforementioned AFC general manager suggested that Murray could still draw a third-round pick, similar to the price the Las Vegas Raiders paid to acquire Geno Smith last offseason. Other executives were less flattering, putting Murray's value at fourth-round pick or less, depending on what the Cardinals were willing to eat from his current contract.

Here are five more quarterback reboot targets to keep an eye on …

Mac Jones,San Francisco 49ersbackup

Jones has been a hot name as a quarterback reboot for the balance of the season, taking over for an injured Brock Purdy and putting together a 5-3 record in eight starts, while completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,151 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against six interceptions over that expanse. His two games against the Los Angeles Rams stood out in particular, including a 26-23 Week 5 overtime win and a Week 10 loss that saw Jones keep the 49ers competitive into the fourth quarter before the game unraveled into a 42-26 loss.

Along the way, Jones showcased efficient starting-level play that was reminiscent to his best year in the NFL — the 2021 rookie campaign that saw him help lead the New England Patriots to a 10-7 record and tease a future life after Tom Brady. Of course, the Patriots entire organization collapsed onto itself after that season, ultimately leading to Jones' play deteriorating behind a poor offensive line and average-to-below-average skill position players. His part in the wheezing end of the Bill Belichick era looked like it would stamp the end of Jones' career, delivering him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, where he went 2-5 in relief of an injured Trevor Lawrence before departing last offseason to sign with the 49ers.

His rebirth under Kyle Shanahan this season teased thoughts that Jones could be the next quarterback after Sam Darnold to rekindle a starting shot — despite Darnold and Jones having very different athletic profiles and skill sets. Some of the Jones hype has settled a bit with the return of Brock Purdy to the starting lineup, with the offense looking more vertical and explosive despite continued injury issues and Purdy having a three-interception game in a sloppy 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers in late November.

The reality for Jones is that his best fit and the other options available will drive interest in him this offseason. While framed by some in the potential reboot tier of a Darnold, Daniel Jones or Baker Mayfield, neither his arm or overall athleticism compares well to that group. He also fits best in a Shanahan or Sean Payton specific type of scheme that is a West Coast timing offense or similar hybrid. The teams that readily come to mind with both need and system fits are the Minnesota Vikings (if J.J. McCarthy can't find traction by the end of the season), Pittsburgh Steelers (if Aaron Rodgers retires) and Miami Dolphins (if Tua Tagovailoa falls out of favor and Miami wants to bring in someone to compete for the starting job). The Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns could also be fits. But almost all of these options for a Jones trade will be predicated on what happens with existing starters and in some respects, potential coaching changes. Jones is simply not a one-QB-fits-all player, and the slots out there for a team to chase him are more challenging that most want to admit.

And as one NFC West executive pointed out about Jones earlier this week, his best fit may already have been realized as a backup to the oft-banged up Purdy. Jones has already excelled in limited time with Shanahan and if Jones were to get another spate of snaps between now and the end of his deal in 2026 — and if he once again performed well with those opportunities — he could potentially be a coveted 28-year old free agent in March of 2027. With the 49ers likely inclined to hold onto him as an insurance policy next season, the hype about a Mac Jones reboot might be just one season earlier than when it's at a peak.

Anthony Richardson,Indianapolis Coltsbackup

Alongside Kyler Murray and Mac Jones, Richardson's future should be one of the most interesting storylines of the offseason when it comes to the reboots. There is clearly still interest in his immense set of physical tools in spite of injuries, poor performance and what some evaluators believe is just an overall lack of maturity for the 23-year old quarterback. Beaten out for the starting job in the preseason by Daniel Jones, Richardson is currently on injured reserve after a freak accident in pregame warmups resulted in an orbital fracture in October. He's still expected to return this season and resume his backup duties behindJones, who is currently dealing with his own fibula injury.

Like Murray and Jones, Richardson is under contract and would have to be acquired via trade. His rookie first-round contract gives the Colts or any potential acquiring team the opportunity to trigger a fifth-year option on his current deal, which would take Richardson through the 2027 season. The question is whether the Colts have any inclination to continue developing Richardson if Jones is ultimately deemed to be their long-term starter. And all of this is coming to a head quickly, with the 28-year old Jones set to be a free agent in March. One way or another, the Colts either have to make some kind of commitment to either Jones or Richardson moving forward. As it stands, Jones has appeared to have played himself into a long-term extension offer. That could change the approach ofgeneral manager Chris Ballard, who said in late August of Richardson: "We're not trading him."

It's a stance that will make little sense if Jones is awarded a long-term extension — even if it's a deal similar to those signed by Sam Darnold with the Seattle Seahawks and Geno Smith with the Las Vegas Raiders. Both of those deals are essentially two-year contracts with the ability to keep each on the fold for a third. Even if that's the kind of limited commitment deal signed by Jones, it would likely be too cost prohibitive in 2027, when Richardson's current fifth-year rookie option projection is salted to be $22.9 million. Of course, the Colts could fiddle with the payout to Jones and the structure of his contract to make it work, but it would also be wildly awkward for both Jones and Richardson to have the franchise basically betting on both to be the starter in 2027 and beyond.

All this sets up the expectation of Richardson being made available for trade as soon as Jones is under a long-term extension. The question is what the Colts could net in return. Three front office executives pegged Richardson's value at a fourth-round pick, which would put it in line with what the Dallas Cowboys surrendered for Trey Lance in 2023. However, two other executives Richardson's trade value at nothing more than a 5th rounder due to an acquiring team having to make a decision in May regarding Richardson's costly 5th year option for the 2027 season.

"He's a developmental player and you're trading for one year of development," said an executive who pegged Richardson's value at a fifth-round pick. "The Raiders traded a fifth for one year of Kenny Pickett."

Will Levis,Tennessee Titansbackup

Levis will be an interesting gamble if some team is drawn to his very big tool set. When you talk to people around the league who have a track record with first-year Titans GM Mike Borgonzi, there is a pretty solid expectation that the Titans will work to trade Levis with one year left on his deal — although it should be noted that the next coaching staff has yet to chime in with its own assessment. But withCam Ward making strides in the starting job,the time-tested and logical playbook for 2026 is for Tennessee to seek out a trusted veteran backup whose skill set and experience will mesh with preparing and developing Ward to the fullest extent. With Levis having lost his job to Ward and having only 21 games of experience as a starter, he's not a natural fit in that role. He's also a roster relic of a previous head coach and general manager.

But even with that inclination to trade him, the reality is that Levis' trade value is about as low as it can get. He hadsurgery to repair a significant AC joint tear in his throwing shoulderlast July, knocking him completely out of the 2025 season. Not only will he have not practiced or thrown in months, there also will be little — if any — proof of how healthy his throwing shoulder is or will be once he returns to the field. That's not going to get you much on the trade market. Maybe a seventh-round pick at this point. But for those who might roll the dice on that, there is some merit to taking a very low risk on a player who has had a few flashes of brilliance. And Tennessee's struggles regardless of whether or not Levis was on the field may actually help him.

One AFC evaluator drew culture comparisons between what Levis experienced with the Titans and the poor surrounding environments that Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield experienced with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns, respectively — and then the Carolina Panthers jointly — as having merit for a deeper look. The Titans' offensive line was a mess, the running game was largely nonexistent and he ultimately ended up playing for two different coaching staffs in his first two seasons. In short, not the kind of environment that fosters seamless development.

"When a guy is coming out of a mess, sometimes that's good and sometimes that's bad," the AFC evaluator said. "It depends on how that affects a player and what they learn."

The evaluator also qualified that the overall skill sets between Levis, Darnold and Mayfield were not apples-to-apples comparisons.

"Levis came in with a whip [for an arm]. Darnold and Baker were superior athletes overall," he said. "Darnold and Mayfield came [into the league] having shown a lot of leadership qualities," he said. "Levis was a big arm and some toughness. Now there's the injuries on top."

While Levis' shoulder will be difficult to set aside, it worth remembering that he had some very respectable games as a rookie under head coach Mike Vrabel before his second season under now-ousted head coach Brian Callahan went sideways in 2024. Levis also had some very competitive games with Callahan at the helm, but any positives were almost entirely overshadowed byterrible decisions, benchworthy interceptionsand injuries. Not to mention theclear well of frustration that Callahan developedover the course of the 2024 season, which was often aired during games or in Callahan's meetings with the media.

Taken as a total package, it's a lot to sort through. But it can't be ignored that some of the scrap heap quarterbacks that have revived their careers and thrived this season also went through some staggering low points, too.

Trey Lance,Los Angeles Chargersbackup

The ship has not sailed on Lance getting one more starting shot just yet — but he also needs to step out from behind proven veteran quarterbacks and get meaningful snaps in 2026. He's 25 (turns 26 in May) and has now been in the league five years without finding a team willing to give him a sustained test run since the San Francisco 49ers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys in August of 2023. One longtime AFC evaluator who was high on Lance heading into the 2021 draft made a compelling point for Lance still potentially having some ceiling.

"He's never really gotten his shot — and you can also say he's never really forced it — but it's not like he's gotten beaten out by bad quarterbacks," the evaluator said. "There's some circumstances. Injuries when he needed a lot of development [in San Francisco] and then look at the guys he's been behind."

The argument in a nutshell: Lance essentially played one season of quarterback in high school and one season of starting quarterback in college. He needed significant patience and development, but spent his rookie season filling in behind veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and had issues with injuries (and eventually) confidence. By the end of his second season, he'd lost any shot at starting to rookie Brock Purdy, who has turned out to be a good starting quarterback. Eventually, he lost his backup job in San Francisco to Sam Darnold …who has also turned out to be a good starting quarterback. Since then, he has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush (who proved to be a quality backup) and now has been the backup to Justin Herbert with the Chargers.

Aside from failing to supplant Rush as Prescott's backup in Dallas, Lance's history has been littered with other good quarterbacks in the room, and severely limited chances to take strides forward on the field. What hasn't changed is that he's still a young, 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback with a strong arm and the ability to impact games with his legs, too. In some respects, his tool set is a similar to that of Levis, but with much less on-field tape to actually showcase it. If you're a believer in Lance, you're a believer in late-bloomers who just needed a sustained opportunity to get their game up and running. Jordan Love, for example, did virtually nothing his first three seasons in the league and often looked extremely poor in Packers practices. You're also a believer that Lance can fit multiple schemes, whether it's RPO heavy, play action heavy, etc.

It's worth noting that Lance had some very impressive flashes in his preseason games. And that Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised him this week as "cool, calm collected" after Lance took some first-team and goal-line reps following thenon-throwing hand injury to Herbert. It's very possible Lance will get some snaps Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. With Lance once again becoming a free agent in March, whatever he does between now and then will determine if another NFL team is willing to bring him in as something more than just a reliable backup.

Kenny Pickett,Las Vegas Raidersbackup

It says something thatGeno Smith has had such a rough season with the Raiders— some of it certainly induced by the league's worst offensive line — and Pickett still hasn't gotten a shot at a start. Head coach Pete Carroll continues to lean into veterans over young players and there's been little doubt that he views Smith as the quarterback who gives the Raiders the best shot to win games. At this point, if Pickett ends up with a start, it will either be due to an injury to Smith or someone above Carroll forcing the change to see if Pickett has anything to offer. But with his rookie deal expiring after the season, there's little motivation for the Raiders to give him a test drive now, only to see him find some traction and lose him in free agency.

Unlike Trey Lance, there's a strong sense that Pickett has already shown his ceiling. His limitations are well known, from his lacking arm strength. But when you talk to evaluators in his last two spots before Las Vegas, with the Philadelphia Eagles and then briefly with the Cleveland Browns, there is some insistence that Pickett's early development was almost completely submarined in with the Pittsburgh Steelers by a mismatched offensive coordinator in Matt Canada and an offensive line that was a revolving door of problems. It became a rhythmless system with a rhythm quarterback plugged inside it.

"We know the top end with Kenny is limited," said an evaluator from one of Pickett's previous stops. "But his floor is probably higher than people think. He has to be in the right scheme and have positive alignment with an offensive coordinator. He didn't have that [in Pittsburgh].

While I think Pickett was slated to compete for (and maybe even favored to win) the Cleveland Browns starting job before preseason injuries derailed him, it remains to be seen if any other team is willing to take a look at Pickett as anything more than a backup. All of that said, Pickett does have 25 games of starting experience under his belt and still could be seen as a possible spot starter with journeyman bridge potential. He turns 28 this offseason. Think along the lines of Jacoby Brissett, who has shifted back and forth between backup, spot starter and bridge starter roles for the last 10 years.

Sitake has built the Cougars into one of the Big 12's premier programs. The 50-year-old coach and BYU alum has the school in Saturday's Big 12 Championship game with a spot in the College Football Playoff on the line.

Sitake was asked, on Monday, about his possible connection to the Penn State job:

"This is a great distraction to have, let's be honest," Sitake said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. "I'll address it with the team. … But they are used to me saying, 'Hey, this is a good sign that things are going well for us.' But I will say that this isn't about me.

"I'm all about the Big 12 championship and keeping our team focused on that. We're going to avoid all of the distractions."

Brian Daboll, Kalani Sitake prediction favorites for Penn State job

BYU coach Kalani Sitake and recently-fired New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll are Monday's favorites to become the next PSU leader, according toKalshi, the federally regulated exchange and prediction market.

Players advocate for Terry Smith to get Penn State job

Interim coach Terry Smith went 3-3 after Franklin's dismissal as theNittany Lionsclawed their way back to bowl eligibility. PSU players lobbied for Smith to get the job permanently.

After the Nov. 22 win over Nebraska, Smith seemed to stake a claim for the job during a postgame on-field interview while players behind him held signs that read "Hire Terry Smith" and fans chanted his name.

"The emotion is I love my guys. I love my locker room, and you see how hard my guys play," Smith said. "These guys play inspired football. They're motivated. And we finished once again tonight... These guys listen to me. They trust me. And they're going out there playing great football.

"It's my locker room."

What about Josh Heupel for Penn State?

Tennessee fans mocked USA TODAY columnist Blake Toppmeyer whenhe suggested Josh Heupel swap Knoxville for Happy Valleyand maybe get ahead of a growing frustration with some sects of Vols fans. In those same predictive markets, Heupel was sitting at 18% Not a favorite. But nothing to laugh at either.

"As Heupel's stock absorbs a hit in Tennessee, candidates with his credentials remain in short supply within this wild coaching carousel," Toppmeyer wrote in early November. "He'd be a boon for Penn State. Now's his time to strike, while his resume remains catchy.

"Before Heupel's Tennessee revival, Franklin staged one at Penn State. Franklin stayed too long. The posse got him.

"Exiting Tennessee for Penn State would be a lateral move, but it's a move with an easier path to the playoff. That's what this sport is now, for programs like Penn State or Tennessee: Playoff or bust."

How is the College Football Playoff shaping up? Here's what it looks like ahead of Selection Sunday

There's not much new with theCollege Football Playoffthis year, but the uneven results of a bizarre season may yield a unique field.

After an expansion from four teams to 12 for the 2024 season, the only change for the 2025 iteration of the College Football Playoff is with the seeding. Last year, the top four conference champions received the four first-round byes no matter where they were ranked in the committee's final set of rankings.

This season, the top four teams in the final rankings will get the top four seeds regardless of their status as a conference champion. The top five highest-ranked conference champs get a spot in the field regardless.

The playoff also announced some changes to the way it evaluates teams in the 2025 season, though the impact of that is less clear. Before the season, the playoff committee said it'll place even more emphasis on games against strong opponents and reward teams more for wins against a good team and penalize teams less for losses to a better opponent.

What will the changes mean for the 2025 playoff?

The preseason changes won't make much of a difference, but the way the 2025 college football season has unfolded will make Sunday's selection show interesting for a different reason.

The rules state that the five highest-ranked conference champions will make the playoff field. While the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC champions are locks for the postseason, the other two are basically up for grabs thanks to a weak ACC.

No. 17 Virginia plays Duke on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. If the Cavaliers win, they're in. If the Blue Devils win, it gets complicated. Duke is 7-5 and made the ACC title game through a series of tiebreakers due to an ugly season of ACC results. While Virginia went 7-1 in conference play, five teams went 6-2 and the second slot came down to a series of tiebreakers, which the Blue Devils benefitted from.

If the Blue Devils win, they still probably wouldn't be ranked because they already have losses to Illinois, Tulane, Georgia Tech, UConn and Virginia.

Which schools/conferences would take their place?

The American conference champ is essentially guaranteed a spot in the playoff at this point.

No. 24 North Texas will take on No. 20 Tulane in New Orleans on Friday night. The winner of that game is a virtual lock for the playoff.

The other conference that will likely leapfrog the ACC is the Sun Belt, because No. 25 James Madison has pieced together an excellent year and sits at 11-1 ahead of its game against Troy. The Dukes would almost assuredly be the last team in the field with a win and a loss by Virginia.

Cardinals rule out Kyler Murray for season; future in doubt

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray's season is over, igniting debate about whether he might ever play in Arizona again.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon did not commit to Murray when asked if he'd be the team's quarterback in 2026.

"I'm worried about the Rams," Gannon said Friday before Arizona's final practice prior to the Week 14 game against Matthew Stafford and Los Angeles (9-3) in Glendale, Ariz.

Out since Oct. 5 with a foot injury, Murray is on injured reserve but the door was left open for his possible return next week. That speculation was muted Friday when Gannon confirmed Murray is done for the year.

"Kyler will not play again this year," Gannon said Friday. "He had some more tests done this week, went out of state, got another opinion on it. It's not progressing where it's going to make sense that he can go."

Gannon publicly remained committed to Murray having the quarterback job most of October and November when pressed by media about the situation.

Murray created a stir Thursday night when he posted a video to TikTok with the phrase "weird year" over a photo of a shirtless Murray walking off the football field. The caption below the image read "Never again."

As for where the Cardinals stand on Murray's future, Gannon said the franchise is focused on Murray's health.

"I just feel bad for the quarterback. He got hurt," Gannon said. "Wasn't healthy enough to play. That's first and foremost. That's where I would leave it right now."

Jacoby Brissett is starting in Murray's place but isn't viewed as a long-term option.

Whether Murray still fits that description is open to discussion. He's 28 and has four 20-TD seasons. He played well enough for the Cardinals to compete before his Oct. 5 injury in a loss to the Tennessee Titans.

He had six touchdown passes and three interceptions in five games in 2025.

The first player in league history with 70 TD passes and 20 rushing touchdowns before the end of his third season, Murray was the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft and Offensive Rookie of the Year with Kliff Kingsbury calling the shots.

Injury history and team success are factors the Cardinals likely will consider before deciding when to write his next check.

He played in all 17 games in 2024 but a total of 13 in 2023 (eight) and 2025 (five).

Moving on from Murray comes at a steep cost. Releasing him outright comes with a cap charge over $55 million and all of his guaranteed $36.7 million salary in 2026.

Trading him activates guarantees in 2027 -- starting with a base salary of $19.5 million -- for the acquiring team, unless the two sides reach a restructured, extended contract with even more promises to the player.

Colorado hires Brennan Marion as offensive coordinator, architect of the high-tempo

Colorado coach Deion Sanders has brought in Sacramento State's Brennan Marion as the offensive coordinator, the architect of the high-tempo, run-oriented "Go-Go" system.

The school announced the hire Friday. Marion will step in for Pat Shurmur, whose contract was up after a 3-9 season. Marion will have highly touted quarterback Julian "Ju Ju" Lewis to direct an offense that takes advantage of creative formations to produce favorable situations.

"We brought in a man that has shown he's creative, innovative, knowledgeable, smart and understands today's players," Sanders said. "He has made a difference on the field and off everywhere he's been."

The 38-year-old Marion becomes the third offensive coordinator since Sanders arrived at Colorado before the 2023 season. Sanders started with Sean Lewis, who's now the head coach at San Diego State, and then turned the controls over to Shurmur. He ran the offense in 2024 with weapons such as Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, but Colorado struggled to find its rhythm this season.

Marion spent one season as the head coach at Sacramento State, leading the Hornets to a 7-5 mark. They averaged nearly 34 points and 425.6 yards. Leading the way was running back Rodney Hammond Jr., who averaged over 101 yards rushing per game.

Colorado is coming off a season in which the offense finished second-to-last in the Big 12 in both points (20.9) and rushing (125.6).

"Humbled to be sought out by the best to ever do it in football — Coach Prime," Marion said. "It's my mission to make sure we put a great product on the field that the entire CU family can be proud of!"

Before Sacramento State, Marion spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at UNLV. He helped the Rebels to a pair of bowl games by relying on a dynamic offense.

Marion is the architect of the "Go-Go" offense, which emphasizes creativity and pace — he wants to run a lot of plays. He even wears a chain around his neck that reads "Go-Go."

In 2023, UNLV scored 40 or more points in a program-record six games. The Rebels finished in the top 10 in the FBS that season in third-down conversions and red-zone offense. They averaged 34.4 points.

Marion also worked at Texas with head coach Steve Sarkisian as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. While there, Marion mentored wideout Xavier Worthy, who's now with theKansas City Chiefs. Marion also was a receivers coach at Pittsburgh where he worked with Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison, a first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2023.

President Trump wants to rename American football: 'We have to come up with another name for the NFL'

President Donald Trump suggested during Friday'sWorld Cup drawthat soccer should be the real "football" in the United States and that the NFL should find another name for its sport.

Trump was on stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino, Mexico president Claudia Sheinbaum and Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney ahead of the group stage drawing for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by three countries.

"But when you look at what has happened to football in the United States, soccer in the United States ... we seem to never call it [football] because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that's called football," Trump said. "But when you think about it, shouldn't it really be called ... this is football, there's no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL. It really doesn't make sense when you think about it."

The three heads of state then took part in a ceremonial drawing of their respective nations into the groups. The U.S. will play out of Group D, Canada out of Group B and Mexico will be in Group A and host the opening match of the tournament June 11 in Mexico City.

Earlier in the show, Infantino awarded his "close friend" Trump the inauguralFIFA Peace Prize.

The prize was announced by FIFA in November. It did not get approval from the FIFA Council, but Infantino was focused on giving Trump the award after the U.S president missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize earlier this year.

Fantasy Football Start/Sit Advice: What to do with Adonai Mitchell, Brian Thomas Jr., more players in Week 14

[Upgrade to Fantasy Plus and gain your edge in player projections and much more]

Start-sit decisions can be vexing for even the best of fantasy managers, especially as we navigate the bye-week season. Here's our Week 14 traffic report to help you set those lineups.

Green Light ✅

TE Brenton Strange vs. Colts: He spent most of the year on injured reserve, but Strange has been a difference-maker since rejoining the lineup in Week 12 (TE5, TE5). The Colts generally funnel production to the middle of the field, allowing the fourth-most points to opposing tight ends.

WR Michael Wilson vs. Rams: He kept seven targets last week even with Marvin Harrison Jr. returning, and now Harrison (heel) has been ruled out. As such, Wilson becomes a proactive play. Arizona's passing volume is a glorious thing.

TE Kyle Pitts Sr. vs. Seahawks: He's made a career out of letting fantasy managers down, but Pitts has seen an opportunity bump with Kirk Cousins starting, and it's likely Drake London will sit again. And as outstanding as the Seattle defense has been, it does struggle against opposing tight ends.

WR Devaughn Vele at Buccaneers: The New Orleans passing game as a whole gets an upgrade against a Tampa Bay defense that funnels production to the pass. Vele has been involved for two straight weeks (including a tidy 8-93-1 last week) and the Saints keep their target concentration narrow.

Yellow Light 😕

WR Adonai Mitchell vs. Dolphins: He's quickly become the preferred target in New York, and he'd be in the upper section if tied to a better quarterback. Mitchell runs a lot of downfield routes and that brings in volatility, but he probably has eight targets in his back pocket even before this game starts.

RB Jordan Mason vs. Commanders: He's generally the team's No. 2 back in a timeshare, but Aaron Jones Sr. isn't 100%, so Mason could be looking at an opportunity bump. And Washington's defense is a dream matchup, allowing the third-most points to opposing running backs.

WR Zay Flowers vs. Steelers: He continues to produce solid yardage most weeks, but he hasn't scored a touchdown since Week 1. Lamar Jackson's injury issues have to be factored in as well. Flowers belongs in the WR3 bucket until further notice.

TE Darren Waller at Jets: I understand if you don't want to tie yourself to Tua Tagovailoa, but recognize that Waller is still a featured part of this passing game, especially at the goal line. Waller is also a good grab for the lookahead schedule, with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati games coming soon.

Red Light 🚨

RB Bam Knight vs. Rams: If he's going to pay off this week against the Rams, he'll need some touchdown luck. The Rams rank fourth in run defense DVOA and parcel out just 3.9 yards per attempt.

WR Justin Jefferson vs. Commanders: Always remember that our game is about numbers, not names. With sophomore QB J.J. McCarthy failing to launch, we need to recalibrate this entire passing game. Jefferson has made it inside the WR25 range just one time in his last seven starts.

TE Oronde Gadsden II vs. Eagles: His production has come down in recent weeks and it's unlikely to bounce back here, as the Eagles have erased tight ends all season. The Chargers' passing game is also in limbo, with Justin Herbert (hand) likely to be limited, if he even plays at all.

WR Brian Thomas Jr. vs. Colts: At some point a poor start downshifts into a poor season, and Thomas has reached that area. He's managed a paltry 5-83-0 line since returning two games ago, and the Jaguars have pivoted to other options.

Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos seeking another year of college eligibility

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos is appealing to the NCAA for another year of eligibility.

Attorney Darren Heitner announced Friday he's representing Castellanos in his legal fight after the NCAA denied the player's waiver request for a fifth season.

Castellanos, who transferred to Florida State last December after one year at Central Florida and two at Boston College, believes college football's sanctioning body should grant him another season because he played in only five games with the Knights in 2022.

Castellanos played against Tulane in the American Athletic Conference title game after starter John Rhys Plumlee aggravated a hamstring injury. Backup Mikey Keene opted out of the game because he wanted to preserve a year of eligibility before entering the transfer portal.

Castellanos played "only because of circumstances beyond his control," Heitner said.

"Just weeks after Tommy's participating, the NCAA issued a blanket waiver allowing future players in his exact situation to maintain their redshirt status," Heitner said. "Players today can participate in four regular-season games plus a conference championship game without losing eligibility."

Heitner added that Castellanos is "being penalized for the timing."

"Considering the postseason exemption that now exists, this case demands a fair resolution," Heitner said.

Castellanos completed 58.3% of his passes for 2,760 yards this season, with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also led the Seminoles (5-7) with 557 yards rushing and nine scores.

FSU coach Mike Norvell is returning for the 2026 season despite his team losing 13 of its last 16 games in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Norvell pledged to make "fundamental changes" to meet the program's championship standard. It's unclear if Castellanos potentially playing another year in Tallahassee is part of Norvell's plan.
