WEATHER chiefs have warned that rain, chilly nights and frost are on the cards – with temperatures plummeting to -1C.

Conditions are expected to become more unsettled as the pressure takes a turn.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said: "Some showers in the North this morning with a lot more cloud around and more showers expected to push in from West later.

"Over 5mm of rain in parts of South over next 24 hours but much less elsewhere."

Met Eireann's Michelle Dillon warned rain is set to hit and it will be "a little cooler" for the next few days and for the weekend.

She said: "Now pressure is slipping and we will see a change to something a little bit more unsettled."

Highest afternoon temperatures will generally be around 8C to 12C with "chilly nights".

This morning will bring a "good lot of dry weather" and some brighter spells in the east and the south.

But "a scattering of showers" will develop in the north and for the west.

A cloud from the Atlantic "will be moving in across the country".

The forecaster said: "Then later in the morning and into the afternoon we'll see that more general showery outbreaks of rain moving in from the west, becoming heavier times and the west and the southwest.

"And later too more generally across southern parts when it will become drier and brighter further to the north."

Highest temperatures will reach 8C to 12C.

Tonight will bring "lingering rain" in southern parts.

And it will be cold with some showers near northern coasts.

Temperatures will plummet to 0C to 5C with a "touch of grass frost".

Tomorrow will see a mix of sun and showers with temperatures between 8C to 11C.

She added: "Then a cooler with a mix of sunshine and a scattering of showers through Friday and the weekend."

Friday night will be dry but "some frost will set in" with lowest temperatures of -1C to 3C.

Saturday will have a mix of "sunny spells and scattered April showers" with highest temperatures of 8C to 12C.

It will be "dry and chilly on Saturday night" with lows of -1C to 2C.

Sunday will see "general falls of rain moving in off the Atlantic during the day".

It will stay "fairly cool" with highest temperatures of 9C to 12C.
